Pixel Art / [WIP] Contra-esque boss
« on: June 21, 2011, 08:47:33 am »
This is the final boss for an upcoming game, I'm kinda stuck with the palette I have, but I think the color choices pretty much make sense :) I started with the left half, so the light is supposed to be coming from the top left (the right side is just a flipped copy). Somewhere along the line I got a little lost in the this one lol. I might redesign the head to distance this thing from the contra reference, I don't want my Contra envy to be too obvious lol. I don't know what the heck I'm doing with the neck, but it's gettin' there ;)

General Discussion / NES style
« on: June 18, 2011, 11:32:46 pm »
Hi all! I'm Johnny B :) I've been making NES style games for a while now, and I'm hoping the Pixelation community might take pity on me and help me out with these 2 things...

1) Developing a non-insane 16 color palette for the NES
2) Finding some type of guide for making NES sprites/images

For the first one, the palette, if you've observed any of my posts, the colors are always the first to be pointed out as "broken" or "it makes my eyes hurt" lol. I've reviewed tutorials (including Arne's 16 color palette tutorial), I've searched online, and I haven't really figured out why my palettes are so whack. The reference I've been using is this...

From this, I basically just pull colors, and do my best lol. Is there something missing from this? I've done the best I can do with this, but I'm hoping some benevolent pixel artists might step in and show me the folley of my ways, or even better, just throw some palettes my way! I know that a proper pixel artist develops his own palette, but I don't really have any hang-ups on using a good palette that someone else helped develop :) Some reviewers have noted that the Lazy Brain Games are "colorful" go figure :P

As for the NES reference guide, is there a book or a website or something on what the specs for NES art is? Specs as in:

Max number of colors per sprite (is it 3 or 4?)
Max number of colors for the background
Max size of a sprite
Max number of frames per sprite
and so on...

I hope no one feels like I'm just trying to get other people to do the work for me, but I've spent quite a few hours searching for NES art guides, and working with palettes, and I got nothin' :( After seeing some of the amazing pixel art here, I know there's quite a lot of collective knowledge and experience. Are there any benevolent artists out there that could help me out with this stuff?

Gratefully,

-Johnny B.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Boss ship
« on: June 15, 2011, 12:53:33 am »
I've been working on a nifty NES Raiden type game with a twist, and I thought I'd do a boss that had a bit more going on visually. I'm only using 4 colors (1 for transparency) although I'm layering some of the sprites on top of each other as was done back in the day ;) I'm going for a dark techy kind of look for this boss. I'm pretty happy with the rendering (even though I just copied over the right side) and I'm looking for some critiques on it in general. I know the palette is a bit odd, what can I say? I like weird palettes apparently ;)

If there's any trouble spots or inconsistencies in this boss, let me know! ;)

Pixel Art / Adventure character crit
« on: May 24, 2011, 10:25:12 pm »

Hi all! I'm attempting to work in a little animation into the next Lazy Brain game. I like this character's overall feel, but I'm not sure about the walking animation. In the game it seems okay, but I think it could be a bit better. I'm going to "paper doll" this guy once I'm happy with it, so I'm hoping I can get this thing right lol. Any edits, crits, or pointers?

Thanks!

Pixel Art / Mecha Spider Island pixel art
« on: May 02, 2011, 01:13:48 am »
Hi all! Just thought I'd post up some of the pixel art for the latest Lazy Brain Game, Mecha Spider Island. This game is far bigger than previous entries, but still uses the same crazy palette, which I have finally retired ;) Any and all critiques are always welcome :)

If you want to see it all together, check out the game ;)

Pixel Art / Bug Hunt images

While they're nothing super-special, I thought I'd just share these just for fun, although crits are certainly welcome ;) The whole game was made in about 2 days.

Here's a link to the game if you want to see how it all fits together.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Boss Monsters
« on: February 12, 2011, 01:25:23 am »
I'm near completing 2 of the 3 bosses for an upcoming game, so thought I'd post them up for some critique :) I'm still learning, but I like to think this is an improvement over my previous games. At this point, I'm stuck with the palette I've chosen, which is this...

I'm hoping this palette won't hurt anyone's eyes too much!

Here's the straight image of one of the bosses, the classic eyeball boss...

And here he is in the game (obviously there's some issues with the HUD :P)

This one still has a couple of problem areas, but I'm interested in any glaring issues you might be able to find ;)

This other one, I'm not quite sure what it's supposed to be yet lol.I'm just calling him "Boss 1" at this point :P

Boss 1 in-game...

Love it? Hate it? Let me know! :D I'd like to get a feel for how close these are to done before I start on the final boss.

Pixel Art / [WIP] Chaos Chimera
« on: February 03, 2011, 07:02:48 am »
Here's some of the pixel art for an upcoming game, titled "Chaos Chimera". There isn't too much yet, but I'll be doing some updates. Since seeing the awesome work on this site, I'm trying to kick it up a notch with some of my own spriting. Although I'm still using the same palette that I've always used for the Lazy Brain games which are these 15 colors...

Palette:

Here's what I have so far for the player character, obviously he has a problem when switching sides :P Part of the problem is that I need the end of the gun to be along the same circumference to have the bullets come out in a logical way. This will ultimately have more in-betweens, 18 frames for each side if possible, for a better looking range when pointing towards the mouse.

Player Character & Gun Smoke Effect:

Here's  a mock-up of a screenshot, with a couple of character ideas. I'm using as much black as possible, since I love the way it looks, plus it keeps things visually open for explosion effects and other cool stuff. This is the beginnings of an alien infested cave teaming with crazy mutants and alien type enemies.

Let me know what you think so far :D

Pixel Art / Lazy Brain pixel art
« on: January 22, 2011, 09:26:38 am »
Hi all! I'm new to the site, so I thought I'd post up some of the pixel art done for the 5 existing Lazy Brain games. I sort of just cherry picked the better images, there aren't too many backgrounds of interest :P These images span 5 different games, although I used the same 16 colors and the same resolution (256x240) for all of the Lazy Brain games. Each game is done in a matter of days, so making sprites that are quick and servicable has been the main priority. Let me know what you think and enjoy!

General Discussion / Recomendations for a good tileset imaging program?
« on: January 22, 2011, 07:16:12 am »
Hi all! This is my first post on pixelation, this is an awesome site! I'm no stranger to pixel art, although I will admit I've never done any tilesets at such a low resolution as I'm doing now. I use photoshop for everything, but photoshop isn't really set up for tiling. In the past I just used the tileset section of GM to handle my tiling needs. Now I'm running into a problem with the resolution, it's too small, and I have no way of making it bigger! So, I thought I'd ask for some recommendations for a tileset program that can output image files. A zoom feature and simplicity of use are a proirity, but I'll take what I can get :P

Regards,

-Johnny B.
