Yeah, I know what you mean about the irises. I'll try to fix that.

And yeah, I personally think the background is too bland, so I plan on changing it soon.
Looking forward to see the revised version...

Anyway, you did a great job with your avatar. No sense beating yourself up over little things. It looks really good to me.
Y'know, for someone who claims to be no pixeller, you sure are good!
*blush*
Oh... well... probably it did not turn out to be a complete disaster only because I feel comfortable with tiny stuff...
But, hey, thanks for the encouragement! You just convinced me to try to improve it* and remove the line below it.

*edited now... it looks a bit more like me... but there is still job to do :-\

Commercial Critique / Re: Commercial Critique: The Chaos Engine

you have two identical colors in the palette. one is used to draw a shadow, so you can toggle having a shadow on that tile row via raster effects (changing that palette entry)
OK. So, I had got it right.

Well, I find that difficult to believe. The only thing tricky about a raster effect is getting it to run fast enough and timed right.Perhaps the raster timing is lees flexible on Amiga;
Indeed, there are timings issues.
For example, with a LORES screen (that is, ~15 kHz horizontal and 50 Hz vertical), while the Copper writes a value to a color register, the beam roughly draws four pixels, meaning that the Copper cannot be pixel-perfect, horizontally-wise. Moreover, the kind of trick you have in mind requires the CPU intervention which, as fast as the CPU can be, still is deadly affected by the slow CHIP RAM access bottleneck (this also means that even if the effect was applied directly by the CPU - i.e., without Copper at all - still the timings would be just as tight). In a nutshell: simply impossible, if what one is after is creating perfect shadows at any arbitrary horizontal position. And, anyway, asking the Blitter to blit just a single plane (without even having to read any data: just a pure write) not only gives perfect results, but also requires much much simpler code.

I remember  games (Switchblade, Stryker and the crypts of Trogan) on the amstrad CPC, a mere 8bit machine running at 4mhz, that changed the entire palette once per scanliine.
Indeed, on the Amiga, whether the Copper manages to change the whole palette depends on its size (more colors = more writes), its type (f.ex. a 24-bit palette requires more than the double of writes with respect to a 12-bit one) and the graphical needs (f.ex., if colors are freely used, the Copper should do the operation only during the horizontal blanking... which is definitely very short for this kind of operations).

I thought I should have a proper FAD avatar as well... what a pity I'm no pixeller!
My only hope to manage to create something vaguely resembling myself was taking a real picture and editing it. So, I took one of the few I had at hand, chose a limited number of colors, scaled down (both size and colors) my face (the one at the top) and then started pixelling... it took a lot of time (of course, I'm slow ;)), and eventually managed to get something acceptable (face at the bottom).

However, it looked way to realistic, whereas I wanted something cartoonish like most of your avatars... so, I spent again a lot of time trying lots of different palettes and pixel arrangements, but I'm afraid I failed miserably :(

Anyways, it's late now and I've already wasted too a long time... so, I guess I'm gonna have to be happy with this :-\

Cool background, indeed!

Well, as said, this is just lovely :)
Perhaps the last frame could have less square irises... but still eyes are a gem to look at!
The only thing I really have a issue with is the background... maybe too many hues... is it still temporary perhaps? I noticed you did not do any AA against it...
Anyway, hard to notice given the cuteness of the rest ;)

Very nice screenshot. Sprites are OK, but what I really love is the backgrounds (mmm... leafs aside :-\).
I can't try the game - running on AmigaOS right now - but in all, it looks like a fantastic job for just three days :y:

Hi again,

instead of opening a new thread, I thought this was fine for this:

Again, these are from an old game of mine and I don't have any use for them, so I'm just interested in your expert opinion in order to learn something for the future - since I lack the time to, I'm not going to edit them.
I selected the tiles that represented more or less known characters, I hope you'll enjoy them (the last two being a bonus for C=64 lovers ;)).

P.S. I know, the palette is silly ;)
P.P.S. I've slightly reduced the saturation of greens of the little soldier, so the previous comments (by me and others) apply to a picture with a different palette.

mmm... are those railings supposed to be rigid beams? They look a bit out of context, given the curve of the bridge.
Moreover, their size/height/spacing suggest that the bridge is indeed normal, thus - as others have noted - making the buildings look very small.

hehe, yeah, that's AstroBoy. I figured it would be kinda funny to see him zip by.
And it is ;D
