Pixel Art Feature Chest / Re: Little Knight Scene
« on: November 23, 2013, 04:34:15 pm »

ah! I should've made that more clear, the edit of the Knight is an ''isolated edit'' to show how interesting lightning can make and object more exciting to look at! It's just an example and not ''how the scene should look''

Oh ! It really does look interesting and good when isolated, I will definitely keep it in mind when working on pieces in future   :)

Thanks :)

Thanks a lot for taking your time to make such a useful post for me !

There's one thing confusing me,
Isn't the shadow on the Knights back opposing the light on Princess front ? (not sure if I explained that well..)
Since if Princess is facing light source, shouldn't the light source be hitting Knights back and I should have shaded the front instead ?

as for the Dragon.. I think my original colors sketch looked similar to what you did, but I must have ruined it with the texture  :(

Thanks again !  :)

Pixel Art Feature Chest / GR#145 - Little Knight Scene - Shading
« on: November 23, 2013, 01:15:39 pm »

I've already posted this piece in my PJ gallery, and DA.. so I'm probably not gonna make any serious edits, but I'm hoping to learn..

How can I define forms of the dragon and where ever else it lacks form, and how could I have avoided pillow shading ?

What exactly do you guys think I need to improve on ?

Thanks in advance  :)

This is really exellent! Is not easy to create such a beautiful scene+sprites with this kind of limited palette

Very nice work.

Thanks! :)
I changed the color palette slightly (removed some colors that aren't supposed to be there but Idk how they got there - such as 15 transparent colors etc)
here is the edited color palette (I wasted a color on grey bg for PJ, since for some reason transparent color kept making plenty of different colors
I also rearranged the colors

This is the final version I posted on PJ :)

Oh wow thanks guys!
Really mind opening edits! :)

@Decroded one thing though, if everything has a shadow like that, shouldn't the characters have shadows too ? I added the shadows on everything, thanks a lot for helping :)

@PixelPiledriver, thanks a lot! I used your ideas and designed different characters plus I even edited the main character :) Hope you like it

I think this is finished now ?

I don't like how empty you made the roof, so I didn't remove color from all the tiles, but part of them at bottom.. I don't really see point in that though :P

This looks really good so far Stava!
I like how the blockiness has been slaked with the new details.
The only addition I see that seems off is that canopy on the left; the red and white striped one.. seems like the angle should be side-view.

I figured there would be a issue with the canopy, since I was thinking making it in a different angle than people would expect, just to break the stiff-ness that was previously pointed out..
I think the side view or front view for such tings are really common, I wanted it to be different, and I guess the way I did it doesn't work with the perspective
I figure it's a easy fix to change the angle, but I'd love to rather figure out how to keep it angled but working, there should definitely be a way and maybe somebody here could help :)
I'm not sure if this changes much, but I added support from the other side of canopy (I think this makes it clearer which side the canopy is facing)

This is the palette I've been working with (32colors)

This is my progress so far..

I like how the first sprite (warrior guy) came out, but after finishing the tiles I think I got tired so I'm unhappy with the other 2 sprites, I'll probably take a break now.. I know there's some mistakes out there, but atm I can't really figure out what the mistakes are, hoping somebody would point them out or make a edit.. It would help a lot :)

haha reminds me of a more serious version of Lord Farquaad from Shrek
maybe you should go that direction :)
