General Discussion / moving to graphicsgale
« on: October 09, 2012, 02:53:18 am »
Hi guys I'm finding photoshop quite annoying to work with for basic sprite animations so i wanna give graphicsgale a go.
I got stuck straight away though trying to add a new layer but the button at the top is greyed out.
Anyone know why that might be please?
Thanks.

Pixel Art / [c+c] Rock tiles 32x32px
« on: July 11, 2011, 12:12:51 am »
After many failed attempts at rock tiles, here is my latest efforts.
I know some of them don't actually tile properly but besides that I'm open to any help on how to get better at this.
I keep getting stuck between wanting to do some larger shapes and then thinking that it will look too repeated when I tile to do that.
Is it better to stick with smaller, repeated patterns such as the diagonal chunks?
Or is it just that I need 3-4 different variations?
I have read the thread in the feature chest and looked at many references but I still find this difficult so any tips would be great!
Cliff face for mountain areas - those are not mountains on top though just random rocks which look odd now that I post it.

This is coming out looking like some sort of icey rock cave area.

I post this guy as a reference for scale. I think the rocks appear way too small??

General Discussion / Need tablet pc: good, the bad and the ugly?
« on: July 03, 2011, 08:46:55 am »
Hi guys. since recently becoming quite addicted to pixel art, I'm really wanting to be able to do this on the go instead of being chained to a desk.
Also I would like to say go have a coffee somewhere and do some sprites.
So I'm looking to get some feed back from u guys who use tablet pcs which are good and bad?
Where I live in brisbane australia it is really hard to find these in stores to see before buying so I'm trying to find out what is the key requirements.
I don't want to spend more than is necessary to run photoshop without lagging too much but I am also tempted to spend up to around $1000 if it was much better to work on.
I don't plan any high resolution stuff though sometimes I end up with quite a few layers.
I don't care if it runs win xp or win 7.

I realise it needs resistive/pen input and am wondering if pressure sensitivity is a big plus for pixeling?
I see that some models also have capacitive multi touch which seems great I can zoom in and glide around with left hand while penning with the right but I wonder if anyone has experienced this with photoshop and knows if it ruins the square pixels by making it blurry or odd shaped "crusty" pixels because that would put me right off.

I heard the motion brand is quite good and lots of features but what brands do u guys recommend?
Also if anyone is perhaps selling a decent one that works good then I could be interested.

This has turned into a bit of a scapbook for my WIP of a Game Maker platform engine.

As this is my first real attempt at both game programming (have other programming experience) and pixel art (just used to sketch when I was much younger), I am very much looking for c+c on the graphics as well as any suggestions and cool ideas for the game design and concept.
Latest playable demo is here if anyone is interested but its just a bunch of random test rooms at this point - http://gmc.yoyogames.com/index.php?showtopic=510554

Pixel Art / Small rock platform
« on: October 18, 2010, 04:52:26 am »
Hey guys I'm new here and inexperienced with pixel art.
I've been trying to work out how to draw rocks to use in my action-rpg platform game and this is what I came up with last night.
No special features, just plain old repetative rocks but its the first time it hasn't turned out totally crap so I thought I would post it  :)

I'm just using the image editor in Game Maker 8 Pro without any preparation sketches.
Any feedback or handy info for a noob is welcome.

Also I'm generally really hopeless with colours so if any of you pros have some helpful info, tutorials etc on building palettes that would be great   ;D
I have trouble with how to get nice colours where for example green grass might have more blue in the shadowy bits and more yellow in the highlight for example, is there a technique to this sort of thing or do people just do it by eye?
Another example is how to make a stone block look like it has multiple light sources of different colours.
And if there is cool techniques to add clear, shiny water (rather than hardcore blue) trickling over rocks.
Anything along those lines is helpful   :D
