Pixel Art / Re: my little world, monsters! ... [please C&C]

really sketchy but:

Consider using some animation techniques for creating a sense of termoil and speed in the characters movement seeing as they are under a grave deal of strain.  Whilst you are giving it bat wings make note that insects tend to have a greater body to wing ratio then these larger animals and so may also serve as good references.  This edit is just meant for ideas, I would also reconsider the face as from what you said he should be under strain not angry.

they have feathers and some fuzz underneath
Down, which is just soft fine feathers.

I think FrostPumpkin is most right so far with, reshape head and chest.  If you think his is too cutesy, just don't use the same style or forms instead use a reference of a hawk or eagle.

Pixel Art / Re: Swamp mockup revisited [WIP]

*shouts* Hey they kinda resemble SS :P (this is the best way to make a soldier look evil you broke the code).

I remember these they look very nice indead.  So what is the plan, are you going to be finishing this into a game?  Or just picking up the graphics again.

As far as CC, the only thing I can really say is the pavement tiles don't seem to blend to well to the left in that mockup.  I would suggest breaking them up a little more with some transparancy so that you can see some more grass and/or dirt going through from the other tiles.  Your a smart cookie so I'm sure you get what I mean despite my rather poor explanation. ;D

2D & 3D / Re: Official OT-Creativity Thread 2

I got the Intuos for christmas myself, at first I had a bit of adjustment time but I already am finding it very natural.  Actually I was rather shocked how quickly I have gotten use to it.
Something I did when I was fooling around with it (WIP):

I'm actually starting to prefer it to drawing with paper.  Just sitting back a few feet from the monitor and sketching away feels very smooth and as I tend to sketch to relax its good that it requires less stress on my back then bending over a piece of paper.

Any help relating to this sort of art is appreciated as I am not to well versed in it :P.  I think I say that everytime I post anything made in photoshop/psp, etc.

Well I cheated and added an extra shade, but it was a 5 minute edit so I have no doubt you can get practically the same effect whilst keeping the original colour count.

I tried to do some sub-pixel animation on him, but i'm not sure i completely understood the technique.
Well I think you nailed it pretty well.

I think the main issues hurting your piece are colour, contrast and volumes.

A partial edit showing how I would go about expressing the fur texture (main area being dealt with is the torso)...

It really is just re-iterating the point that areas with extreme light or extreme shadow show less details then the mid tone areas.
Also I second the point about background being fine, the point about detail I just mentioned plus it isn't the main focus of the piece are my main reasons for this. Also the last thing you might want is for it to look too cluttered, detail is one way of creating contrast in a piece so keep in mind that contrast distinguishes background from foreground.

Provided are some options you might like to explore.
Because of the size of the sprites you might want to stick with the flat colours. However you can give these sprites a little depth with some speculars whilst keeping the colour counts low. Depending on the backgrounds you are hoping to create, some AA might be nice on these little guys.

A couple of ways I remove colours
For the bomb character remove the yellow and opt for a white
Use some sub pixel around the right ear with some blue tones to create a purplish sense, whilst exchanging the lighter pink with the red tone.
I think the most of my changes are self evident so I will leave it at that.

Pixel Art / [WIP] 'Crunch' and a few characters to look at
« on: August 18, 2008, 04:15:47 pm »
Time to reveal what I've been doing every now and then in my free time.  These are some characters I have been working on, how far I intend to go with them is still up for debate if your lucky you will be seeing animations after I finish off the last of the details on the current ones, but no promises at this stage.

This is the main character of the set, his name is Crunch and I developed the character years ago, his design has undergone some extensive changes since then however (purple didn't seem as cool when I was 11). He is still in need of a fair bit of reworking of the guns and limbs.

The first character in this set was intended as a boss, but I am looking at scrapping him at this stage. Blue thing (Blue Ink), Red thing (Red Ink), Tongue Gunner and crawling Pink thing are all finished. The first green chicken thingos gun needs work, as does the seconds. The giant monster with dude riding is a boss again, the chair and gun are really the last few things needing work on him.

Thought it was time to get feedback, see what people think and get some idea where to go from here.

I really like these, but the further wings from us are all bugging me i'm sorry to say. I think that there might be a perspective issue.

It looks to me like the wing closest to us is on an angle heading back from him, whilst the further wing is almost straight on from the character. I can't be sure if this is the case, but something about the further wing is off putting to me, perhaps something else is causing this problem I am seeing. Keep up the good work, I like what I am seeing.
edit* the more I look at it the less this seems like an issue  ???
