General Discussion / Re: How did you find out about Pixelation?
« on: December 11, 2006, 05:49:25 pm »
I'm sure everyone agrees when I say we are happy to have you, now you can give us all the goss on Digimon and Naruto... jkin. But I do think it's ironic you have Astroboy in your fadatar (luv your work btw) after complaining about the anime  then again Astroboy is more oldschool I love reflecting on the old school cartoons every now and then.

I found out about pixelation through pixel, which I found out about through GMC forum, :( don't get me started about the kids on there so many amateur games. Pokemon fan games and such, It's sad coz it hides the well made ones.

General Discussion / Re: pixel god video in MS Paint!
« on: December 11, 2006, 05:36:57 pm »
I've bolded all the main bits coz this is just a ramble topic

I agree with Ryona in that I think some people are delivering there opinions in a some what arrogant manner, but that could just be my and her interpretations. The truth is the artist has used the medium without realising just how it can be used, this is supported by the fact he doesn't use any real pixel techniques. I'm inclined to think he doesn't really understand the industry of pixeling (2d game graphics primarily). If he were to compare his piece to some of the pieces I have seen in professionally developed 2d games and otherwise then he would easily be out done. I think the most of people are aggravated more by the praise he is receiving for what they would consider relatively easy work using a pixel medium, and furthermore mostly inappropriate use of it. Helm is right when he highlights that the average person is impressed with mediocrity, however to the average person this doesn't appear as mediocrity, Yes his piece is a fair bit bland and unoriginal but then again most people don't do in depth studies of art, they like what they see which is why unoriginal pieces are common, maybe he felt like doing a car because he liked doing cars not for everyone else. And maybe he made it into a video because he wanted to share the picture he thought was rather nice, done in a medium that most (including himself) think is shit, and thought it would be funny ("like being a professional kazoo player"). I recall throughout my school days a surprisingly large number of people who could barely draw stick figures, hell I recall one person who always missed out the body in them and that was during final year highschool art class. Most people find ms paint an impossibly difficult art program hence when they see anything done in it that looks good, even with faults they are amazed, I recall when I first showed pixel art done with ms paint, they were pretty frikin impressed by my skills and I wouldn't call myself exactly that good knowing full well what others are capable of. The fact he has titled himself a pixel god is ignorant and big headed. But from those pieces of his I saw I wouldn't be saying he was a bad artist, just an artist with room for improvement, not unlike everyone. In short, what would Jesus do... :y: There is nothing wrong with having the opinion the piece is bad, but there is also nothing wrong with liking it. Art like all forms of attraction is entirely subjectively oriented(dependant on the person). some will like pictures of naked women others will like pictures of... goats (you know who you are ;)). So everyone take it a little less seriously.

hidden killer = right

Game maker is good for working on amateur work, prototypes and such but it takes up a lot of the computers processing time, I like game maker as this isn't something that concerns the average user, but in a professional sense you wont get that far it is a good learning tool though. Java is good in some ways as it is relatively easy to learn but again it has problems. The advantage of Java is that it is used on mobile games and is easier then C and  C++, if you understand game maker code then you will pick up the basics fairly quickly. C++ however (specifically visual C++ as this one i know supports direct X SDK's etc.) is probably the best for game development it is used in all the higher quality games, it's not too hard to pick up once you understand Java. The main problems you will have with Java, C and C++ as far as working on games is that you have to make a big jump from game maker as you need to learn how to handle graphics and an engine more in depth.

Thanks for the responses everyone, I was just trying something a little different with the mixed resolution. I respect anyone who doesn't like the technique and can see where you are comming from as I'm not too much of a fan of how it's come out so far. I don't think I will be using this style with any new pieces anytime soon.

@ Tremulant thnx for clearing up that about the transition, I think I may continue with the piece a bit but only till I get the transition looking a bit better. As well as clear up those other issues you fixed in the edit.

A piece done for a signature on a different forum... don't be jealous, its not like you guys like me anyway :-*

I'm thinking the main problem is with those areas of the skull that are mainly 1 colour but not too sure how to fix that.

Well this is obviously still very WIPish, but after seeing helms photoshop pic and the In game statue not to mention helms statue I was inspired.

Using helms palette for a bit of unity, I think i may have messed up the pose a little making the thumb look all wrong >:(. oh well I really like it so far anyway but the palette was a biatch for me to get working at first, I think i deviated from the way helm was using it a bit because of this.

Pixel Art / Re: [wip][nudity] Re-interpretation of old artstuffs
« on: December 03, 2006, 06:49:54 am »
I like this piece its very dynamic. My crits are fairly minor as the piece looks well established and I don't want to take from the style of the piece.

OK, I have changed the following:
Along her upper thigh she had a few seemingly stray lines that made her look like her leg had been sewn together similarly to a dolls. This was probably the most in need of editing (still relatively small an edit) I broke that up and continued upwards to her pelvic bone, as The B.O.B mentioned this takes a more realistic view of female anatomy as it conveys curves and I felt that perhaps the bone looked like it protruded a bit too much.
The stomach was a small edit as it had just one part of distinct shading which again looked a bit to linear. Broke up this shading a bit.
Around the ankle I just took some pixels off as it looked like it was sticking out a bit.
The final edit is on the eye. This one i felt was important as her eye seemed to look as though it was open, I wasn't sure if this was intentional but felt it would be to confusing to work it out as a viewer so I changed it by moving the eyelash down 1 pixel and doing a bit of colouring. I also adjusted the mouth a little but thats just a preference thing I think
I think The B.O.B covered pretty much everything else I would have liked to have said. Shorten shins a tad, add more shine to the hair and apply some more sheen to that skin.

I wouldn't go with the arm across his body although at first it seems appropriate but as his body already suggest his shoulder is flexing backwards (thus stretching his abs and peks in the way it has). I overlooked the arm pose question part when i got caught up with the edits :P but this new edit is probably what I would go with.

It suggests tensing of muscles by holding a closed fist. Most associate this with someone firing a gun and it is already conveyed by his teeth gritting and arm looking forced forward anticipating recoil (which is a bit dangerous in reality as it could injure the elbow, but looks okay here). It is tucked backwards which the movement of the piece supports.

dropped 2 colours in the first edit and 4 colours in the second. I think the pink you used as a highlight is a bit much even though it is a stylistic thing it doesn't seem to convey the depth a typical highlight would. as you mentioned there are anatomy problems and though it was your choice I made a bit of a change showing an alternative (its a bit off towards the very middle of the abs but gives an idea of how abdominal muscles look). I like the piece its distortion of shape conveys an interesting look.
