Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Tree

The tree you've drawn looks like its in a different perspective than the reference and your grass: the former looks like its being looked at from the side, the latter like their being looked down at from above.

The rook looks a bit perfect (geometrically) - the roof of an actual straw house has a more ... rough and imperfect outline.

I find it a little strange that the chest and beehives (?) are outlined in black, but the player isn't.

General Discussion / Re: Official Off-Topic Thread

On a completely unrelated note:

This forum seems to have changed, particularly the 'click and zoom' on the images becoming quite blurred.  Pardon if this is an idiotic question, but why was it changed? (I ask only because it's very difficult to view zoomed images of pixel art when the pixels become blurred).

I feel stupid now...
Anyways, I looked everywhere, and the best solution I found was just to downgrade back to FF2, which saddens me greatly.
Not to derail the thread or anything ^^.

Skintone would probably make the best motion blur, imo.

The motion blur would have to be the color, transparency, and 2 other colors. And then you only have 2 sprite palettes left for everything else. Ofcourse, you could re-use the old man palette and the motion blur palette on other things too.

It's a real pain, cause you can't just pick 16 colors and use em however you want like with old PC games.

So each sprite has to be 3 colors?  You couldn't choose to do the blur as a single- or dual-colored sprite?

No, you don't have to use all 3 colors. You have set what the palette would be in the programming, but you can use up to 4 colors, again, including transparency. So you can just use 1 color for the blur if you want.

But I'm guessing that would still take up one whole sprite palette?

Pixel Art / Lightining!
« on: September 17, 2010, 09:47:55 pm »
So I'm trying to do a couple different things with lighting, and I would like some help as to how to go about creating it (and variations).

This is my first attempt:

The upper left image is using the same palette from this, the one to the right of that is an attempt at using the same basic idea with a white background.  The next three are lighting lasers, respectively from top to bottom: one pixel thick with very little lighting coming off the main laser, two pixels thick with a lot of lighting coming off the main laser, two pixels thick with a midway amount coming off the laser.

Also, in the first image, there is a rather WIP sword.  One of the things I'm trying to accomplish is to make a lighting-sword (or other weapon - the concept is a weapon with the power of lighting).

Anyways, critique and suggestions on how to improve lighting, lighting lasers, or lighting blade are welcome.

Pixel Art / Re: Metools!

Finally finished the outline for the animation, although there's still a lot to be done (dithering to blend the colors, modification of the shadine of the cross on his head, general cleaning up, etc.), but I wanted to get some critique on this 'sketch' before I go and do all of the detailing.

EDIT: I did some basic dithering, just to see what it would look like, (I managed to circumvent the tedious-ness by just taking one of the frames with five shades of colors and just changing the color scheme for each frame), although somewhere along the line I lost the dark blue shade.  I'm not entirely sure if I want to add intermediate frames between the ones I currently have... but anyways, tell me what you think:

I didn't bother to shade the cross yet since this was just a quick fix to test dithering, I also didn't re-add AA (which I am not looking forward to -_-).

So I made six variations of the dark metool, just playing around with lighting and color.  Right now I'm working on a simple animation, so I'll post that when it's done.

Yeah, one of them's red...

EDIT:  I got down a very (very ^^) basic animation-sketch.  The idea is for the sun to be fading behind the metool until it becomes just a silhouette, and as you can see, it's still a WIP.  Before I do rest of the work, I want to know if there are any changes I should make to the basic outline.  (I don't want to have to go back and re-do everything just because of a small change in this).

The first frame is the most recent edit of the colored metool, which I'm using as a reference.  For the most part, the only colors I used were the ones in the original palette, save for one extra dark red.  Later I'll use the shades of color from the dark metool to transition into the silhouette.

EDIT:  I switched the colors of the shadows to be bluer, more nightish.
