Pixel Art Feature Chest / Re: Jumping Animation

What you got now is perfect for if the character was standing still prior to jumping, I'd keep those frames for that case. Now, if the character was moving, you'd probably just omit those anticipation frames and use the rest.

I think the biggest issue you have with readability is that your pallet consists of a bunch of closely related colors, a little hue shifting can help make it more interesting. I went ahead and played with your colors just to see what I could come up with...

Older => Newer

In the newer version, I increased the red and green (ie yellow) properties of the brighter colors of the color ramp. I don't know if this is technically what "hue shifting" is but I think it does help to improve readability. While it did wonders to make your highlights pop more, I think it makes the ocean surface too bright so...

I toned down the brightness of the ocean's surface by using the next two darker colors of what was already being used. With this, it sort of blurs the distinction between the land and water which imo is more realistic. Matter of fact, I think with this edit the image now uses seven colors instead of eight o.o

Hope that information helps.

Oh man this is all really bad ass so I don't really have much for critique. Hmm, only thing I would try to work on is the bigger bush (in the first shot), it looks like 4 blobs stuck together, maybe you could unify it more. I'm very impressed with everything else, keep on pushin' them pixels!

:y:

These are pretty good mate, don't really have much for critique.

Hmm, on the other hand, I do find that replacing the black outline with their proper colors usually looks better, you could always try doing that and seeing if you like it. You'd probably be better off in the long run if you got rid of the black outlines, it makes things feel more tangible or whatever.

I just noticed Elmer Fudd got turned into a wascly wabbit haha.

Pixel Art / Kain's Animated Battle Sprites
« on: March 20, 2012, 08:55:58 am »
Hello and good day! I am working on some animated battle sprites for an RPG project, currently have a few in the rough draft stages. Deciding on fully animating the characters during combat is a big challenge on my part, plus I have set deadlines for certain sheets I need, so it is important that I learn quick!

For now I present to you the rough drafts of what I've got. Feel free to point out where I've screwed up or give me advice on anatomy and yadda yadda because I'm still rookie animator over here! :D

Shotgun Fighter

All I've got for this one is the motion of him firing his shotgun and then cocking it, I haven't added the ballistics fire yet. I think some of the other frames I could possibly handle on my own so I probably won't post them, just need advice on these ones for now.

Sword Fighter

This isn't the first time I've made a swordsman sprite set, but this is probably one of the better ones I've ever made. The animated frames are 1.) idle (wait for turn), 2.) action selected, 3.) action pending, 4.) attack, 5.) magic casting, 6.) item usage. I was struggling earlier to create a defensive pose frame but, meh, I'll get there.

Anyways, critique and advice much appreciated!

Pixel Art Feature Chest / Re: [WIP] need help with pixel character

The colors applied on the pants could use some work, to the unfocused eye it all looks like one solid color of black. The feet just appear to scoot across the floor, they legs appear to just slap together. It looks like there is a double pixel issue at the bottom of the animation's fists.

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] [C+C] Rose
« on: March 17, 2012, 03:12:32 pm »
Too much dithering on the hand and forearm. The way the hand is holding the flower, I think all you would see would be the very finger tips and not so much else of the digits. The thumb is bent down on the palm and not having anything to do with holding the rose stem, you should fix that. The arm/hand has too many jagged pixels.

I can see a hint of color theory was planned in the product, but they weren't put together very elegantly. For instance, on the rose, you have a yellow/orange highlight meeting a black outline, this is jarring to look at.

EDIT: The yellow background is way too bright and saturated and does nothing to help the image.

Pixel Art / [C&C] Kain's Semi-Naked Templates II : Battle Animation
« on: November 12, 2011, 02:39:26 pm »
Hello again! This is a continuation of my semi-naked templates series, but I started a new thread to avoid clutter. Yes, time to once again exit my comfort zone and go into some animation, and now the fight is getting personal! This is what I'm working with right now...

I botched the sword attack animation, I don't know the secrets to making it flow naturally. Whats most mind boggling is trying to make a two hand attack like that, and perhaps I guess I just need to break out of my 64x64 frame limit. I suppose the whole "run up, hit the enemy, run back" thing looks dorky, perhaps I'll give them a slide approach, Mega Man X style.

If its not apparent, I'm going to attempt to keep the same general proportions from my earlier templates series. But yeah, I could definitely use some C&C on these W.I.P. frames!

General Discussion / Re: Official Off-Topic Thread

I came home tonight to work on some of my stuff, and my son had this picture up on Graphics Gale.

He's 5 years old and spends day and night playing InFAMOUS 2, and the character is supposed to be Cole's best friend Zeke. For being artwork by a little kid, I was impressed, so I decided to show you all.
