Pixel Art / palette help
« on: August 01, 2008, 08:29:14 pm »
Hey all, been a while since I last visited here. Anyways, I need some help finalising these skin tones. I'm actually really happy with them, but I can't tell if that's just because I've been working on them for so long that it's messing with my mind. Don't bother crit'ing the sprite itself, I'm gonna start from scratch with that anyway.

cheers!

Thanks for the replies, I think I've addressed most of the crits made so far, unless anyone finds anything major, this will probably be the final version before I move on to colouring it (and doing the other animations). I've made the foot movement consistent, this guy flies at 8 pixels per frame. The arm and leg movements should line up better now. Don't worry elk, I haven't forgotten the coat, just removed it till the animation is finished  :)

I also knocked this up in gamemaker, if anyone wants to see the animation moving across the screen .... and at full speed http://www.yourfilehost.com/media.php?cat=other&file=runanim2.zip

hmm, well I agree with most of the crits given so far. I initially measured out the leg and arm lengths very precisely by starting with a stick figure, but a couple of the frames seem to have gone awry somehow. There was no head bounce because I just hadn't animated the head at that point. Anyway, here's the latest version, I added one frame to smooth out the leg flicking issue, and removed a couple from other places to increase the urgency of it, looks a lot more like a lively run to me now -

I still haven't touched the head yet, but most of that will be very subtle, your head really doesn't bounce much at all while running. Oh, and keiisu, it will be much faster, this is the fastest my gif animator goes for some reason.
Cheers  :)

Pixel Art / running animation
« on: April 05, 2008, 08:39:50 pm »
wow, it's been ages since I last posted here. Anyway, I've started doing some pixel art for a game I've always wanted to make. If I ever actually finish it, it'll be a metroid/castlevania style game.

So at the moment I am animating this guy -  - the main character.

here's what I've got so far for his running animation -

I'm pretty happy with it so far, but there are still a few minor tweaks to be made, including adding in some head/hair movement. Oh, and obviously I haven't added in the lower part of his coat, much easier to add it in later. C + C away.

I think capcom's sprites are way too figurative to use as any sort of a reference, the lines they use are (I hope) decided by the angle and shape of the arm, I think you need a good understanding of the 3d form to understand what the lines actually represent. I agree with ep, the original was far more interesting, now it's a deformed beast with normal human arms. Just my opinion.

Looks pretty nice, other than the hands, I think they're a bit small, and unclear. The neck might be a bit long and I don't know what's going on with the back leg, but it looks iffy.  I really like the colours and the face especially, tho the frown might be a bit too much. Keep it up :)

I really liked this little guy as soon as I saw him, but I think we all know he needed a badass weapon. Some parts of the sprite were already fairly impressive in terms of lghting and shadow, so I just cleaned it up, added a couple more colours and tweaked the pre-existing colours. Some bits still aren't great, but this is as much as I can be bothered to do with it.

wow, the sheer quantity of work you do, let alone the amazing quality astounds me. Out of all the different classes my favourites would be the ones with helmets, they just look way too nifty. The run animation looks nice, but the head movement does seem a bit strange, then again, I guess I'd have to see it actually moving across the screen to judge it properly. Keep up the good work   ;D

Pixel Art / Help desperately needed
« on: September 25, 2006, 07:47:34 am »
I've clearly created a piece that is far too big, but ignoring that, the problems I'm having are with dithering and colour selection. ie, I have no idea what I'm doing. I've realised I probably should add more colours, particularly as a lot of the areas that are supposed to be different colours end up sharing particular shades. The face is also looking far too geometric for my liking, but I'm sure I can solve that problem for myself. I can see that the entire image seems a bit too green, but I'm not sure how to remedy it (photoshop is looking like an attractive option), I think this is most obvious on the colours used on the face. The hand in front of her is supposed to be pressed against her stomach area, but I'm still working on that, so it looks a bit warped atm.
