Do you have any links or resources on learning how to create Tilesets? How did you learn how to create pixel art? Do you have any templates or resources I may use to learn?

Sorry for the long reply, I thought I subscribed to the topic for email notifications!

To be honest, I've learnt little from tutorials, although I do know there are some great tutorials out there. I've learnt so much from just looking at pixel art. If you see a great piece of pixel art, you might think "Wow, the color choice is amazing", or "How did he make it look like a specific texture", or "The lighting brings it to life". Copy it into Paint, zoom in, and observe.

Here is a great pixel art tutorial, I only found it recently, and I remember looking through noticing things I had learnt, but only had just learnt the correct name for it!  :P

As for resources and templates, sadly everything I've made had a purpose so I can't share it. If I had more free time I'd probably make things as a study or for free use, but sadly that's not the case.

Hope I helped a little bit.

EDIT: Here is a little nifty online tool for creating color ramps!

Pixel Art / Re: Tileset Mockup - Need feedback

It looks more like one style but

1. a corner tile is missing so the outlines on the bottom right look weird
2. the rough side ends of the cliff look kinda weird to me

Yeah, as I said it was only rough. Just did a bit more work on it now though. :)

I think I'm happy with it, unless someone else has a new idea. I'll make the cliff to grass transition and then start on water now.

Well, I took some advice from you guys and gave it another shot. I got some ideas from LTTP From SNES.

Only rough, but is this better?

You aren't drawing leaves on your tree, so you shouldn't draw rocks on your cliffs.  You are hinting at the bulbous leaf clumps by using a sinuous line between shades on the tree; do the same with your rocks.  Thus, your cliffs should be three horizontal bands of color, with the border between the bands used to hint at rocks.

Good idea, I'll give it a shot!

Are you a fan of BeetleKing's (from this forum) work, by any chance? The cliffs are reminding me strongly of something he posted before, and don't really match the rest of the set, hahah. Or maybe Secret of Mana?:D

I don't think you're plagiarizing. Just wondering how good my eyes are, hahah. =D

My reference was this: http://orig08.deviantart.net/be5b/f/2011/310/1/3/adventure_rpg__game_mockup__by_timjonsson-d4fb31p.png

Just looked up Beetleking on pixeljoint. His art is great, I should plagiarize it... j/k

cool!!!1  though the trees stick out as different stile from the stone walls.  Perhaps giving the stone walls a thick black outline would pull it all together
(i'd consider simplifying the rock texture a bit as well)

I tried the outline but looked worse. I think the main issue is I've got two-colored terrain, and simple style trees, and then a more realistic looking cliff. I'll have to try a new and simpler cliff style but I was hoping for some ideas or inspirations.

Pixel Art / Tileset Mockup - Need feedback
« on: December 17, 2015, 08:09:10 am »
Hi gents and gals,

I'm working on a new tileset, which is a fairly higher res (48x48 tiles), with a distinct style. I wanted to keep the black outlines consistent as you see on the trees and brushes, but I can't seem to come up with a cliff design that compliments it.

I spent a lot of time working on the cliff but it doesn't seem to work with the theme of having the black outlines. It needs to look somewhat 'comical', as its for a project I'm working on.

Any feedback or ideas for how I could make everything fit?

Thanks in advance all!

2D & 3D / Re: MS Paint Sketches - Monsters

Thanks guys. The project I made for them was just a simple silly RPG Maker game, so they won't be animated.

Here's what they look like in the battle screen-

And here's the villain of the game hahaha:

I've been working on a silly game called Black Cat's Story for a while, and Instead of pixelling, I've used a thicker pencil brush to more so 'sketch' in MS Paint. I've still used limited colors and no AA. It's actually something I've found i can enjoy, and that I can do quickly. It's not a style I see very often, what do you think?

Pixel Art / Cave Tileset - Need Criticism
« on: April 18, 2014, 12:36:58 pm »
Hey guys!

I'm currently working on a cave tileset for an mmo I'm working on, and I'm scratching my head about how to transition the walls to black. Here's my current progress, with a shitty example to show what I mean-

As you can see, I'm aiming for a retro 16x16 look. I first thought about taking the pokemon approach like this-
http://www.vgmaps.com/Atlas/GBA/Pokemon-E-CaveOfOrigin-B1.png
But I found it takes away that 'cavernous tunnel' feel that I'm striving to have.

I'd love a few tips and inspirations.
