Pixel Art / Re: Steam Quest MockUp
« on: September 27, 2010, 08:41:17 pm »
Hello guys,

sorry for the late response, but i was quite busy recently.

That background is WAY too noisy. Remove some layers.

Still not sure how to reduce the noise, needs some testing.

As much as it is noisy...... I think that the colors of the background and foreground are WAY too similar. If the saturation of the background was dialed down a bit, it might help.

I guess i also should add more unique elements, i agree the colors still need some tuning.

Also it looks odd that the character is standing right on the border of the frame, plus the font treatment is really bad. Dark on dark with a weird nonsensical border. It is hard to read.

You got me there, the font was the result of my lazyness  :P - that part definitly needs to be polished. The character is in the corner as this should be a scene at the beginning of a level, you play from right to left. But if this can be misunderstood, i should reconsider.

I'd like to see an improved version. :)

I will continue and with the good hints i am optimistic to deliver a better version.

Thanks for your input folks, reworking.... :)

Hello Folks,

i started this one some time ago and this is a reworked version of it. I want to add energy display and some obstacles/enemies. Anyway C&C welcome as usual.

The background consists of three layers 16 colors each.

Hello,

i reworked the character once again and dropped the sailer theme. I tried to make the spirte easier to read and change the palette esp. the flesh colours. The pose should be ok now, too.

Hello,

for me the battery doesn't work too well in that corner (the joke works though, i like the idea much). Maybe if you add it to the chest or the glasses of the robot it would be more integrated in the whole. Just my 2 cents.

Hello,

here is an edit of the Dragonfly based on EvilEyes objections. I think its actually an improvement and i found that i neglected the overall flow of the light in the earlier versions.

@mrblu: Its not supposed to copy a dragonfly but look similar. In fact i tried to get away from the exact original form while keeping its main characteristics.

Hello,

It's clear you put a lot of work into this guy and it does look nice, however it also looks very surreal due to the habit of rounding everything out. The arms, the backpack, the legs even the wings look spherical.
Hmm, this was intended. All parts are supposed to be rounded.

I think this is mainly a problem of not studying any reference and just putting shadows and lighting where you guess they should be. If you want to bump your work up to the next level you should study how light interacts with objects in real life.

You are right, i did not use a reference for lighting/shadows here. You think some variation in form would help this piece ? Don't get me wrong, i seriously want to understand the problem you see here, but its hard without a tangible example.
Maybe you could add some detail so i can understand it better ?

Hello,

I've no objection to Vierbit sharing his excellent work, but if anyone here is active in the atari scene, I'd really appreciate this being kept quiet.  We want it to be a big surprise when it is released ;)

Saying this in an public internet forum is....humhum... very peculiar ?  ;D ;D

Anyway you ruined the surprise for me  :'(

But it looks very promising and its always nice to have STE features - will you push the hardware a bit ? (or even 4-bit ??)

Consider my lips sealed  :-X

Hello,

MonkeyBoi: Thanks for your edit anyway. I now added a current version to the top of the thread to avoid stuff like this.

Cheers
