« on: June 30, 2006, 11:02:25 pm »
This dude is called Noobinator, you may have seen his walk cycle before which is shown below...

Now I needed to do another bit for him, a jump sequence...that is shown below here...

Comments and crits how to make them both better would be awesome...

General Discussion / Backgrounds...
« on: June 23, 2006, 04:40:55 pm »
Hi I am trying to make some static backgrounds for a sidescrolling game...

Like the ones in sonic which stay still while having a scrolling foreground on top of them...

The sort of thing i was after was a city in the background with a few clouds and the moon in the sky

1) Does any one know of any references to something similar to what i want or to other backgrounds I can learn from

2) Does anyone know of any tutorials i could look into

3) Does anyone have any of their own methods to do something like this because  to be honest I dont  know where to start...

Thanks...

Pixel Art / Re: Cartoony styled dude for a game walking right...

Thanks for the comments about the pig, I'll be sure to edit that and post it again, however the dudes legs I am fairly happy with because I think it fits in with the style i was attempting to achieve.

Although the legs in the edit are extrememly good, I feel that legs in that style  would be out of place in this sprite...

On advice about the hips moving, I am wondering how I would achieve that, because the dudes right arm is covering up the hips from view...

Thanks for the comments, I changed the main guys walk cycle, by editing the feet and the position of the legs and added a few more frames...I kept the black outline because I felt that they added to the cartoony stylee of the dude. I might change the outlines for the pig however since I used lighter colours for the pig and the  black ones make him look flatish...

So yeah this is what I have now...

Any more comments and constructive critisism would be nice please...

Added a flying pig as an enemy...probably also representing the chances of this game ever being finished...

Pixel Art / Re: Some Boy
« on: June 14, 2006, 02:46:48 pm »
I am pretty new myself, but I have a few comments to make...

When you are starting out I suggest doing bigger sprites. It takes a LOT of skill to fit in a lot of detail into such a little amount of pixels. My first impression when I saw it was that it was flat that is because you have flood filled great proportions of the boy, and then added a few darker pixels to the left hand side...I dont know what perspective you were trying to achieve with this, however the waistline still needs to be curved to show that the body does actually go round instead of being completely flat...

I also think the body is a bit too square...

My suggestion is to remember where the light source is and this will also make parts of the body lighter, as well as one side darker...look at other sprites with a similar perspective from yours and see how they draw them. Then draw some in the same style as theirs. Once you get competant with that, edit your sprites so that they fit into your own unique style...

Sorry if my advice is a bit confused, but I am starting out myself too...

I was wondering if I could have a few more critisisms and comments before I edit the tiles...i was wanting to know of any techniques that I could use to help improve the water in particular, and more ways to "add depth"...

Also I was looking for advice on how well the characters fit in with the background...because that is something I am really not sure about...

Thanks in advance...

Thanks a lot for the critisisms so far...

st0ven your advice as been particulary helpful and I will bear that in mind when I edit the tiles to make them better and at the end of this post you will see a shot of the riverside scene with characters on...

aleiav, i didnt want to do too many tiles before i got these ones checked over by better artists than myself so that i didnt waste as much time, obviously when I have got better on doing one type of the basic sort of tile, then I will make more to add to the variety...it is a lot more time consuming this hole pixel art than i thought  :P
