Most excellent tech demo =) I personally did not have any trouble with the brightness or with discerning foreground and background...but I think that's because there isn't anything to interact with yet, so everything is really background. ;) Once there are enemies and items and suchlike, we will see how difficult it is to differentiate.

Besides an overall grin of appreciation, I will just say that I found his knees to be surprisingly shiny while I was playing, as bright as his sword and belt buckle. Is it supposed to be ripped pants? If so, you may want to yellow them a bit.

That is all :) Good show, good show.

Oh, one other thing -- I thought the standing attack animation had him pausing a little too long after the slash, compared with the crouching one which felt faster. I think the overall time the slash takes is fine, but it feels slow because of the way he holds his sword motionless for a moment after striking. (Like, "haha! I sword you! I am a wolf! *pose*"). I only really notice it if I attack while running.

Pixel Art / Faces, faces, 1bit faces, I am bad at them!
« on: January 29, 2011, 06:17:43 pm »
Hello hello! I am making conversation portraits for a game, for which I might post the sprites for later -- but for now it's just the faces, faces, 1bit faces! Well, I only have one finished-ish right now, but I realized I never tried to dither in black and white before (I always just did solid two-tone simple things) and as you can see it looks a bit busy and silly. Any thoughts you have will be the best thoughts ever!

In this game you will play a traveling ninja gentleman, and this is one of the disgruntled people that you must assist so that they needn't scowl so anymore.

and alternate background that is even more busy why did i make this i dont know what im doing with my life?

Thanks!
(Depending on my levels of success with this I might opt for making the game in color, but I rather like the STARKNESS of black and white)

P.S. In the game this will be zoomed in to 2x, but it should probably still be readable at 1x just for the principle of the thing.

General Discussion / Tile map tutorials?
« on: January 21, 2011, 11:34:58 am »
Hi every1body! I am almost sure that there's a tutorial I've missed about tiling somewhere on here, but I hope you will forgive me and help me find one. =P I've done bunches of pixely things (and read all the classic tutorials) but never anything tiled, and thought I might save some time by reading first. =)

In particular I'm looking to do tiles for a 2d platformoventure game ... which is in black and white now but probably won't stay that way, uncertain. The ground and such seems straightforward though not necessarily easy, but I am particularly curious about various theories regarding what scenery to make out of sprites and what scenery to make from tiles. So if you know any good reading materials on the subject please do share! (Or link me to the posts on this forum I've foolishly missed :\ )

Thanks!

Edit: Oho! I finally found a wealth of things: http://www.wayofthepixel.net/pixelation/index.php?topic=4912.0

Edit again: MMmmmpity there are not more dicussions there for side views. What am I to do? EXPERIMENT? Madness.

They mean, I think, that you should host your tile images and put them up here instead of making people go to that download page.

I knew it was SplatPixel line art right-a-way  :)

Asenath! I remember you from ways back -- though of course I have a different name now -- were you the one who made the PyGame project with the lady who could do the sliding kick, and the weird gargoyles? I played that soo much, considering that it had no combat functionality. I replaced the background jpg with a picture of my cousin screaming in joy while riding a Hay Waggon, for extra fun. If that wasn't you, it was just someone who made a game whose title was your name. =P

This picture makes me feel nostalgic, but queasy. I've been in retirement almost as long as you, so I couldn't say a lot, but you should update it and make it ever more bootiful!! Do not disappear into the mist again. Highlights, smoothiness, etc, etc...maybe it is just owing to the white background that the hair looks funky. I imagine you wanted it to look stark, which it prolly would on a neutral sort of backdrop.
