From what I can see it looks like you're leading the animation with the hammer rather than the person, so it looks like the hammers is pulling the man's arms instead of the arms pulling the hammer. By moving the arms a frame before you move the hammer it can help and having the hammer resist a little when initially lifted to show a heavy weight to it.

The animation itself isn't playing but a good place to start when worrying amount the animation aspects are the principles of animations. For this one especially I think using arcs and easing will add a lot to it.

^ this is a really nice read for aspiring animators, but it's a bit long to reasonably scour through as a pdf so the pages for running I'd suggest looking at is 102-213. You can quickly skim through these and just look at the drawings throughout to get an idea.
