Pixel Art / Re: Skyler, portrait of a fictional horse

You should probably look into horse anatomy. Right now both of your pictures look like dogs instead of horses.

I think you already know that your pieces are pillow shaded as well. Read up on shading technique to give you pixels a less cartoony feel.
Dithering can be nice, but try not to use it when it's not necessary or appropriate (I'm guilty of that myself).

Also, the eyes are really creeping me out, you should make them... less like holes and more like eyes.
Hope that helps.

Yeah. I forgot to say, there's no other movement than legs for now because I'm going to be interchanging torsos with different guns and etc.

edit:

Here's a better view of the walking/running cycle and some other new stuff thrown in

New edit:

Soldier has been redone. I think it's a slight improvement.

Animation for walking:

(sorry for the black BG, these sprites will never be seen on pure black...)

Please critique.

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] German Panzer Tank

Well, the perspective of it looks weird.
Did you use a 3D model or a photo for reference? From the ground tiles, the game seems to be top-down, but the tank sprite isn't. Also, you might want to consider the scale of your guys in relation to the tank. The Panzer IV is definitely smaller than you're making it appear.

Size reference:
http://www.achtungpanzer.com/pz3.htm - You're close, but the soldier dolls are out of proportion to the tank and vice-versa.

I suggest you start with something less complicated first before you attempt to "pixel" something this big...

So I looked at it more closely and it doesn't look as good as I thought it did. Probably because I was just relieved I finished it (did it all in a sitting :o ).
Yeah I agree the perspective is quite messed up. It was originally meant to be top down. The missile pod is mounted 45 degrees, but the rest is really not clear. Palette definitely needs some tweaking and I probably dithered more than I have every done in any single pixelart scrap... not sure why it happened, it just did.

The one thing that's always been conflicting me is that it seems the norm for "good" pixelart is to be high contrast and fairly bright and shiny with lots of colors. But I want to make a piece realistic, so to say. And real metal is hardly ever immaculately perfect and shiny like a watchface. (I realize your reference photo is an extreme to point out light sources, Terley.) That's what's been frustrating me. And I'm not sure how to improve at this point.

Just take my other C+C thread in this forum, I've gradually improved upon the tanks and artilleries, but they don't seem realistic...
There's one game that does this really well with low res graphics and that's C&C1. Even though the vehicles are 3d prerenders with pixel touchup, it's very convincing and doesn't have that cartoony feel that's prevalent to most other games that make use of pixel art.
I want to be able to achieve that level of believability with my art.

Can anyone give this noob some advice on how to do that?

This is a sample piece and is about as finished as I can say. I spent around 3 hours toying with the form and about 2.5 actually pixelling it. It was a lot of fun for me to draw and labelling the features brought back elementary school memories. : )

Any comments and critiques welcome!

Well, I messed around with the tank for a bit and changed the color choices so that it has more contrast. Then i changed the turret so it doesn't look as retarded with the dent in the middle and did the tracks. This was better than before and I proceeded to edit even more and go overboard, completely pimping it out as you can see in the last turret. Haha.

Also made this towed artillery piece:

What do you guys think?

Oh, here's that explosion you asked for, Sohei:

It looks pretty crappy for an explosion I'd say. I didn't pay too much attention to it when I was making it...
More or less hap-hazardly animated. Definitely could be a lot smoother, since the game runs pretty fast. I just don't know how to make a decent looking explosion without being all cartoony.

Cheers

Large auto gun

Based on the large auto gun from homeworld... looks kinda bland now that I see it next to all the other entries... not enough details?

Hi all, long time reader, first time poster.
I'm making a 2d side scrolling strategy game in the same vein as Armor Alley. The engine is mostly complete, now all I have left to do is the game art.
I've made some stuff as you can see so far, but I think it could be executed a bit better Would you folks mind giving me some feedback?
The  old tank isn't used anymore, I just keep it in there in case I want to edit it to become something else.

Originally the sprites were drawn on a black background, but my friend suggested we switch to something lighter so we wouldn't make sprites that turn out too dark or miss important details in lighting and shading. I think he was right, any opinions?
