Hey Noah, I know from the Facebook concept art world. Trippy to see you on here, cool to know you started from pixel art!

Here's another edit, with a few points:

Main problem holding you back is readability of the forms. You seem to have a good grip on the colors and the sort of style you want, the rest is a balancing act of priority.

The doors are a pathway into another room, so they should pop out to the extent that it seems intuitive to go toward it. The floors should be less contrasty because you need to be able to establish a flat plane and easily see the sprites that would be walking across it. Walls can be brought out a bit to show the structural planes of the building and lighten up a bit. I would reiterate the point about the reflection of the windows as well. Remember that bounce light can never be as strong as the light source that it's coming from.

I like what you have, and want to see you push it further. Good luck.

Not all custom graphics, but some custom stuff. Haven't updated it in a while, but still proud of the demo that's up.

Hey guys remember the "goblins of the games industry" thread? Found this article interesting about one guy quitting his job and opening his own game studio and calculating the cost:

Here is a paintover with some suggestions:

-The dither bg doesn't do much for you. Made it all black for cooler contrast.
-Composition: Your version had elizabeth super small and in the top right corner. Moved her and made her bigger so you have more res to render and so the portraits roughly create a triangle. The monster is at the top of the triangle suggesting power.
-The title itself is really sinking into the bg. Make it pop out! Changed the color for readability but you can probably stylize the text more. Don't be afraid to cheat and use a real font. Typeface can really convey emotion if you know which ones to use.
-I flipped victor because I thought it would be more interesting if he's side eying his own creation instead of looking offscreen.
-Anchored the composition with a circle just to make it more obvious who the real focal point was
- Messed around with rendering on all 3 figures mainly combining clusters to go for more implied "brushstrokes" as some the clusters got redundant and hurt readability a bit.
-The bit of orange is just showing the light source and how it might still work even with the flipped victor.

Overall I think you did a good job conveying the emotions in each face, and the colors are great. Clusters are for the most part good. I would also encourage, but this is up to you, an alternative design to the monster rather than relying on the iconography of the Boris Karloff film. Maybe take a description from the book and use that with other non-related ref to come up with a design we haven't all seen before. Keep going.

You can make the red and grey color scheme work but think about it in these terms. You want your player/enemy sprites to be easily readable at a glance. That means strong contrasting values. Make them pop from the BG!

Yellow and red for the player has the right idea but the colors you have are clashing a bit too much right now, and it's jarring. Look up color theory to find better groups of colors and to use them to evoke emotions and associations that each color carries.

For the grey, it's very flat, very boring because they're mostly midtone greys that are pretty desaturated. Try some hue-shifting. Use a red tinted grey or a blue tinted grey and play around with the color ramps. Same with the red, very straight up without much variation. Maybe get some warm purples in there or orange/yellows for the highlights.

Study space shooters. There are a lot of them. Look at how they use colors. Study their designs and try to deconstruct where the references come from. If you don't know how to detail the ship, well you don't make it up from nothing, you research and borrow disparate elements from ref. Don't go crazy with greeble though, use it to draw the player's attention to objects of importance.

Good luck, and welcome to pixelation. :y:

You've got a good concept here and good ref. Use them! Notice how much taller the grass is on the roof. (Guessing they don't mow up there). Also the house is red which vibrates against the green and gives nice readable planes. (You can still maintain gloomy atmosphere with desaturated reds.) Def have to differentiate the roof green from the ground level grass because it is causing readability problems.

Also I would say to fake some juice and throw some red accents into the grass as well just to let it vibrate and give it some richness/variation in the color pallet. Trees look good but could use some darker values to help push the volume a bit.

Overall it's a great painterly style and I want to see how this progresses. Good idea for an environment and curious to see how you'll start to render those rocks a bit more. Keep pushing it.

Have you guys checked out the CGhub replacement site, artstation? It's in beta but I have invites if anyone wants to try it out. Not really pixel art related but I know a lot of you guys do suff in different mediums. (You could probably use it as a pixel portfolio site as well.)

Not really related to the thread directly, but I was thinking. Does anyone know what happened to Eyecraft? He was a cool guy to chat with and a great artist. I'd love to see what he's up to these days if anyone knows.
