That's some nasty pillowshading, bro. Try to shade with a defined light source in mind instead of just slapping dark colors around the outlines.

He seems a bit off-balance, like he's leaning forward and about to fall over, or slouching.

this forum has a feature where you can click on an image to enlarge it. it's recommended that you post your work at 1x so we can see it that way, and zoom in on our own to look at the details

okay a little bit of a bump i guess. i've done a little bit of work on perspective. i edited the idle frame to try and make it seem more top-down.

i also started on the side-view. not much there yet, though.

I definitely think that the head should move in some way. it seems very static and the way it's so immobile looks incredibly boring right now.

it's hard to do a walk cycle from this angle because the form isn't instantly recognizable as human. because of that i hink that you might want to exaggerate things, especially in the legs and the feet.

i think that more frames would help as well. it would give you an oppurtunity for a smoother and more subtle animaton.

don't know what else to say right now. i'm know there's definitely more but i'm having a hard time putting it into words. other people around here are a lot better than i am. good luck.

Ah, my friend in irc just said the same thing when I showed her.

It's intended to be a butch girl of sorts (space soldier type). The shoulders are definitely too broad now that I look at it, but the heavy posture is intentional.

Okay, I've made some changes.

Hopefully she's a bit more feminine now.

Pixel Art / [wip] rpg walking animations

Just something I've been working on a little bit this morning. I'm trying to come up with an rpg sprite style that's a bit more realistic than some of my other attempts.

It's a bit messy, because I haven't really gotten to the details yet. I want to make sure that I'm pleased with the animation and general structure first.

As always I'd appreciate some feedback.

That's an edit of a sprite from Pokemon: Emerald.

I think you could benefit a lot from increasing the contrast in your colors (and/or maybe taking out a color or two). Your darker shades there (which are still pretty light) tend to be pretty close to each other, and when viewed at 1x they all appear to be a single solid color.

He seems a bit hunched over and his shoulders seem very square. The upper body is a lot larger than his lower body. It seems like you were trying to go for top-down perspective with it, but the end result makes him look disproportionate.

Also, if he's a 32x32 sprite, why not make the most of the space you have? Heightwise you have three or four extra pixels there that you haven't touched.

Additionally I don't think there's nearly enough contrast in the color palette. When he's at 1x, it almost looks as though he's just an outline filled with a single color.
