Pixel Art / Re: Need help on shading dark sprites

Making him read as Spidey in b&w, difficult but not impossible. I took the cheap route, added red but you don't have to.

Changed proportions. Your arms here are too short.

You had this going in version #1,  added rimlight. Film noir has a lot of over the top lighting next to shadows. And I think you get that, but you're undermining that with these lit places in your last pic. This is if it's a standalone sprite, depends on context tho, if it has to be well lit, it sort of works but it's a compromise.

So I went ahead and add another color to the palette, I think this turns out pretty well. The highlight you showed on the edge of the coat (that pops out the collar) really blew my mind. I keep trying to make it dark for some reason and it was unreadable. Big thanks on that one.
His arms are now also longer, I fix a few part for better read. I'm pretty ok with him now, the only thing that bugs me is that I'm using a premade palette so I don't wanna to add another color. Is it ok to do so?

Thank you, but I don't get what you mean by underlight. Did you mean adding thin shades of highlight to emphasize the folds of his clothes?

Some more working

Here's a pic of him with the intended background. I think he sticks out pretty well, I don't know if I should bring a brighter highlight to him?
On the other side, this guy pretty much doesn't look like Spidey himself, however he'd be recognizable with I put him along with other Spideys.

As in the title, I'm having big trouble on spriting this guy, Spiderman Noir for my fanart. He wears all black and I just can't find a way to slip in those highlights. I was thinking about leaving him be as right now, but he felt saturated and out of place compared to the other spidermen I've made. I'd love some advices.

Here is a version I'm working with, I feel like the highlight color are too bright / contrasty? They're in a palette and I don't want to add more colors.

Pixel Art / [CC] First time doing 100x100 sprite, need feedback on shading
« on: November 24, 2018, 07:34:39 am »
I'm doing the knight from Trine 2, this is the first time I do a sprite larger than 64x64 and I'm extremely tilted. I don't know how to shade his body, leg and shield right now, they have some details printed on which confuses me further. I'd appreciate some critiques.

I like the colours and poses! Are you planning to make blacklight version of them later? ;D

The lighting/shading on their legs doesn't feel cohesive to me. The third one feels fine (the shadows are cast by her torso and arm), but the rest seem to have highlights in random places.

The second one's face (or rather, face-mask) feels a little side. The shape of it is fine, I think it could just use a larger shadow on one side to show it wrapping around the face.

The second one's abdomen has some dark shadows on it, what is creating those? On the other hand, the third one is leaning forward, but her belly's fully lit, when it should probably be in shadow.

I actually have the blacklight version already, with completely different poses, for some reason I forgot to add them here. They're much less details tho, I uploaded the full "wallpaper" version of them because they're made mainly to stay in that wallpaper. I'm having lots of problem fitting all the details on Akali's jacket, and how to make them glowy.

I fixed some of the problem you mentioned, I don't know how to shade their leg really, they're too dark to add darker shades (I think?), maybe I should leave them with 1 color?
On Akali, her face was meant to be sided, I meant to make each of them look slighty off the screen ( and failed having 3 of them looking straight at the screen). I also re-shade her ab and Evenlynn's belly.

I really like the postures especially the last one.
The second one though, her shoulders look a bit slumped perhaps.
You should also fix Ahri's (is it her ?) camera-left leg, looks really weird.
I took a little time understanding that Ahri's hand is facing the camera, maybe adding a darker shade would help detach it from the rest ?

I uploaded the fixed version above, I really don't know how to fix Ahri's hand, and her leg yeah, I'm having a hard time dealing with straight leg, I don't know why it looks ok on Evelynn ( the leaning girl) but not on Ahri.

I usually do low-bit pixel art, no bigger than 96x96, but with a lot of details and shades. I'm still doing almost the same thing, but non-outline and minimal shades. I'm also practicing on character poses, and really looking for feedbacks. Thank you.
Left is original sprite, right is fixed.

Yeah I'm feeling the same, but since this is in such low resolution I'm not sure how to highlight it ( I suck when it comes to clothes and folds). Still I'll see what I can do

Here's what I came up with your feedbacks. I hope the cape is still recognizable tho hehe. Haven't animated it yet since I'm working on some other pieces, but I hope it's improved.
