Pixel Art / Re: Help with walk/idle animation for game sprite.
« on: September 04, 2009, 11:42:51 pm »
Arms look good to me, but the back leg looks sorta like the knees just wobbling about.  :-\ I haven't had a look at the frames individually (mainly because I don't have anything to edit animated gifs with) but the foot looks sorta like its glued to the floor. It should push the floor back, then lift off the floor to swing forward again. Another issue might be that the hips dont move when the characters walking. Hope this helps  :)

It looks a bit flat on the right, the back of your figure. Maybe get that darker shade in around the back edge a bit more. If you wanted to keep the backlit part then maybe go into your darker shade and use the midtone as the backlight?

Shape-wise you could do a star (or something with convex corners on it) or a pentagon.

A four pointed star would be easily identifiable against the other shapes for example.

You could put something with low saturation and either very dark or very light in the background behind the jewels. A metal wall, computer system or mancala board type thing maybe. Anything with jewels makes me think egyptain actually. No idea why  I don't know what your theme is going to be, but hey - just suggestions :p

I love the flapping ears!  :o

Cool edit too, extra contrast of colours makes everything that little bit clearer I think. And rounder.

Pixel Art / Re: My isometric cliffs, pointers please :)

Yeah I haven't got to the grass just yet, when I do I'll hopefully be able to disappear some of the bottom of my cliff into light foliage though. That should make it look less like it's hovering

Might give some grass a shot now before I check back for any more suggestions. I need to sleep soon though

Edit:

I've redone the cliffs (better? worse? help?) and made some grasses... The last grass (left) is definitely best but it's still not right somehow  :(  The first one I did (middle) looks more like algae covered cobbles or moss or something I think, and the other just looks like a cabbage patch. Help please?

Edit edit: I know I need to stop the grass tiles looking so repetitive, but once I decide on a style that works I'll do 4 or so of them and it shouldn't be so much of a problem...
Also re-uploaded them to get rid of artifacts from me saving it wrong...

Another edit:

A load of different grasses I've been trying out... I think the lighter version of 3 and the top (light green) grass from the 3 colour schemes of 4 work best... 3 looks odd with the cliffs though from using the same colour as rock highlight for dirt.  They all have something wrong. :-\ Can someone help me with this please.  :(

Thanks for the reply :) I moved the little guy out the way for you ;) He's still there so I know how big things are though, will be important when I do trees and things I think...

I think I know what was bugging you at the front, didn't notice before but that bit was much more rounded and like a single pillar than the rest, so I think I've sorted that out a bit. Also I've brightened it up with a highlight colour and made it less nobbly to try and rid it of the barkyness. I think it looks better but not sure if I should tone down my new bright colour...  ???

Any ideas?

edit: Forgot to actually attach the image. Awarding myself 15 dappy points for that one.

The alien is brilliant! Do you think you could make his head slosh about in his helmet? Might not work at such a small scale...

For deformable terrain maybe have your edge tiles with smooth curvy edges to help hide the tiles and at the same time be able to do blast radius quite well? Sounds strange but maybe look at how some old RTS games did the black masks for their fog of war, they would have been trying to hide the tile shape too.

Wow! Teach me!   :P

That really is amazing. I agree with Draco about the trunk though, as proud of it as you are adding a brighter shade would make it look more solid I think. Did you ever use that lightest brown shade?  ???

Oh ok. Least you tried :)

If it helps though, when I'm doing light and shadow (with pixel or pens, doesn't matter) I break complicated shapes into spheres and cubes in my head so its easier to know where shading should go.

edit: and good luck with the animation :)

It's a cool critter!  :)

I like the speckled belly too, but I think you need more difference in brightness between the lightest and darkest colour, that way you could round it out more/ give it volume. Hope this helps.
