Job offers / Re: Need Pixel artist to paint diferent kinds of cactuses
« on: February 01, 2020, 07:37:41 pm »
Hi there! I'm Alas. I'm a pixel artist looking for work. I haven't done a cactus recently, but check out my twitter for some examples of my work ^^:

Please email me at if you are interested with the number of cacti you want, the sizes and the prices you're willing to pay.

Thanks! Have a great day!

Thanks for letting me know. That's weird. I can see it on mine... Can you see it on DeviantArt? Link:

I'm looking for general feedback on the scene. Do the elements look good together? Could the shading on the mountain be improved? Thank you in advance.

Hello there, Luth, I'm Alex  :)
I don't know too much about how pixel art was made back in the day, but I know that they were limited by the technology. I would guess that they could only use three or four colors for each sprite. I think they used his tunic color on his face to give some sense of shading in spite of those limits.

Another explanation could be hue shifting. A lot of pixel artists today use this particular technique to add interest to what would be an otherwise bland color palette. Someone showed me this palette generator awhile ago. I haven't used it, but playing with the sliders helped me understand what hue shifting is.

I was having a lot of trouble visualizing the head angle change, so I decide to try drawing it as a box first. Do you think it's worth it to keep working on this creature, or would my time be better spent doing simpler animation exercises? Or should I try to redraw him completely with the animation in mind? I feel I might be a bit out of my league with this one.

I second sokyogoku on increasing contrast. I feel since he's so small, it might be best to just go for one or two highlights instead of trying to create individual feathers. If you want a feathered look you might have to make him a bit bigger.

Quick Edit:

That looks super cool. It looks more like concept art than pixel art though. Pixel art tends to have a lot more texturing. Here's an example of Kirokaze's work:

It's a fairly simple scene, but there is a lot of detail in his shading.

Nice to meet you too. :) I'm also pretty new to pixel art.

His right foot is lower than his left foot. If you imagine the ground as an straight line, like it is in most 2d games, one of his feet is above that line and the other is resting on it pretty naturally.

Also, if he's a robot, maybe make him shiny? ^^ Unless you want him to be matte.

Thank you for the advice. I think this is significantly better, but I feel he's a bit stiff.

I think you're right about that. :) I do think certain things are easier to recreate in the style than others though.
