Pixel Art / Can I get some help for the lighting on this?
« on: June 05, 2012, 11:01:08 pm »
Hey guys,

So I drew this a few minutes ago.  It was inspired by a post I saw on this board.  Anyway I think I did a decent job but I need some help with the lighting.  I attempted to make it appear the light source is coming from the top right but I'm not sure if I accomplished this.  Before anyone asks yes it's MLP and yes it's in my own style.  I'm just doing a practice piece here and I figured I would attempt something slightly different.

I would greatly appreciate some help in this matter.  Thanks

comments, critiques and concerns are very welcome.

Yeah man it's not easy to shade that.  Cylinders can be quite difficult.  Quite difficult indeed.  Light traveling in a straight line and hitting some of the form but not others.  It's not easy to grasp.  I can't even imagine how I would tackle this problem......I definitely wouldn't consult google or do any light studies.  I'm stumped.  Sorry dude.

Quick thought about the pose.  Ponies tails aren't like that irl.    Not sure why the tail is defying gravity.  I think that needs to be adjusted.  But I don't know...

Anyway it's so cool and totally not lame to see Pony fans come out of the wood work and post on pixelation.  Awesome.  We do not see enough pony work here!    You guys were in hiding or didn't know about this place for awhile.  And now that's all changed.  I for one see nothing wrong with loving a show about female ponies(pony's?) having wacky nonsensical adventures that are pointless no matter what gender you are.  I don't find it odd, weird, degrading, shameful, sad or immature in the slightest.  Your parents would definitely not have a problem with it.  Who would?  I truly believe and stand by this.

I certainly wouldn't 'not mind seeing more! I hope you keep posting your work forever and never mysteriously vanish. :y:

Also sorry I don't have an edit.  I'm really busy and honestly...And I wouldn't want to tamper with such a masterpiece.

Btw who is your favorite pony?  I don't have any favorites I feel the same way about all of them  :P

Do you really duplicate for every revision?  Or is there some way you can keep track of this stuff so you can post animated progress gifs.  I'd love the countless revisions I make to characters as gifs!  Is there some software you are using that takes a screenshot every "x" seconds?

Btw loving the new PPD, her head might be a bit large but other than that she's pretty spunky looking.  Although I did prefer her cool flippy do hair more.  It's cuter and I think more in line with an aggressive type character.  Aaaand you should keep her a robot...like Marina from Mischief Makers.  Pile DRIVE DRIVE!

Also quick question.

Your characters are quite large.  Aren't you worried that at this size it's going to be very difficult to maintain quality and consistency?

Can't wait for the next update!

Sweet anim!  I don't think I've ever seen a sprite that renders the planes of the face as well as per pixel lighting. Sets a new bar for me :p

Anyway I have an edit for you and some teeny bits of advice

So after agonizing over exactly what could possibly be made better I came up with a few subtle points and one not so subtle.

1. When her arms swing back from the max position the spacing for them is very even.  In this edit I've made it take a bit longer for her to pull her arm back in front of her.  What that does is adds that pendulum effect.  You actually have it working quite well when she has her arms at the max distance in front of her and as she begins to pull away.  It's very smooth and not jarring.  I just took that effect and use it on the back swing.

2. I very subtley made her chest move just a bit.  Just to add that extra bit of movement flare.  I added a slight bounce as well as her armor dragging a bit behind the main movement.

3. I have her head seemingly dragging behind her body as she falls to the ground and when she rises.

4.I added some highlights to her pants, and boots. (not necessary by any means but it's something that could be done)

5. I have the bottom of her shirt following through with the movement of her body.  Once again subtlety is key here.  When she falls it drags behind her and when she hits the ground it follows.

I think that's all I edit

Here's a side by side (hope this helps out in anyway possible)

Pixel Art / Re: Sub Pixel animation test(color dancing)
« on: May 12, 2012, 01:19:01 pm »
Right I can see what you mean for sure.  I was trying to use those areas more as a moving hold like in traditional animation.  Although I don't want anything to be superfluous fluff movement.

However to be truthful I'm not sure what to do with the other areas.  I was thinking of raising the shoulders which would raise his his head, then his hair but I'm trying to do it so I have minimal real pixel movement.  No idea what his legs would be doing.  As for the hair.  I get really caught up in whether it would move up with him or if it would drag behind because he was moving up.  I'm still an early beginner at sub pixel but I'm burning to learn more!

Also I don't know how I missed that crotch popping like that?  All I know is I was frantically trying out a bunch of different ideas for the belt and that must've been left in.  I think my brain tricked me into thinking everything was A-OK but that's only a side effect of working with it for so long.  Thanks for noticing!

Quick question.

Do you think the timing of the pixels moving on his leg are satisfactory?  Does it match his overall movement?  Is it just the position and direction of movement that doesn't work?

Fixed that weird crotch issue.  I don't know how I missed that.  Also I took out the animation for the legs. (check first post)

Pixel Art / Sub Pixel animation test(color dancing)

I've always wanted to know how to do sub pixel animation aka color dancing by some.  And after studying a fair deal of Joakim Sandbergs animations I was able to get a grasp on it.  Here is my first attempt.

An idle animation for my action game character

(Also for those of you who have seen this character here before and maybe wonder where exactly this game is...I'm working on it but it's a huge endeavor so I work on little games in the mean time...it's something I work on just whenever)**it is a bit embarrassing to keep show the same guy though without having a game to show :(**

Aaaaanywaaaay.

So comments, critiques, advice?

PixelPileDriver any thoughts?

Pixel Art / Re: Finished walk cycle, now how do I actually move it?
« on: May 09, 2012, 03:33:34 am »
This a problem I have myself with my own games.  What I normally do is the sliding technique but I know that's not right.  The way I see if the only way to get this working right is to set a speed for your characters before you animate them.  Then based on that speed decide the beat for the walk/run.  Anyway for me it's a lot of trial and error.  The best thing that can be done in this situation is to not go too final with your animation before you test it in game.

Honestly I would love to hear more solutions for this because I hate that sliding feet thing.

I recommend you use a program that is built for pushing around colors easily.  http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/us/index.html  Graphics Gale edits colors based on an index.  What this means is that you can pick a color in the palette and you can shift it's colors around.  Furthermore this happens in real time.  This is how I was able to find all the stray colors you had.  I went through every color you had and I would select it from the palette then I would change the hue to something like Bright neon green.  This would show me all the areas that that palette used.  For example you had a color that was by the eyes that was only used for 1-2 pixels.  I was able to spot these because when I shifted the hue only 2 pixels changed green.

Heres an example of what I mean.  Take a look at the Palette on the right side.  Notice how I can easily tell where that blue shade is by shifting it to green.  Now all I have to do is decide if that color should be left alone.  If so I undo and move onto the next color.  Using GGale it's quite easy to clean up the palette of stray colors.  Likewise it's very difficult to have a problem of stray colors when editing with an index based program.

You don't have to do any of this I just wanted to let you be aware of what can be done.

I edited the colors down to 17.  You had a few stray colors that weren't really doing anything.  I also merged colors that were way to close to the same color to need to be unique.  However I didn't edit any of the skin tones.  Also remember this is going to be viewed in 1x.  So as long as it looks good at 1x it should be good.

Also what program are you using to edit this?

I agree.  Leave the nostrils out.  Just some shadow under the tip of the nose is fine.  Also I like the eye shine as well.  I should've made more of an edit to the body but I wasn't sure how to tackle something so stylized.  Good edit btw!
