Pixel Art / Re: Skyler, portrait of a fictional horse

I wasn't suggesting you finish the picture in that style. But whether you use harsh highlights or not, I do think you need to define the anatomy a bit more, and put more thought into choosing your colors. Some colors were so visually similar that I couldn't see them even at 3-4x magnification. But there's many ways to skin this particular cat...

Here's a couple threads that go into detail about color restrictions and choosing palettes. There's only so much useful critique on pixel technique I can give, since I started pixeling all of two days ago, but these threads are fairly in depth.

Choosing colors and pallettes.

Check out this thread for some really impressive pixel art - it's worth studying the techniques used in some of the pieces:

Regardless of whether it was intended to be cartoony, your picture still doesn't look like a horse. Try and define some of the muscles and bone structure using shading.
You're also wasting a lot of colors - some of them were nearly indistinguishable from their neighbors. Here's a quick edit: I boosted the contrast and added some definition.

I assume that horse in your avatar icon was drawn by you - apply the same skills to your pixel art.

Oh, and welcome aboard! :)

Just a quick update. I've tried to address the crits - your edit was a big help, tocky.
Hopefully I've managed to reign in the dithering. Feels like I might be getting close to the final product.

Really nice stuff!

One thing I'm noticing is that all the platforms have smooth, rounded edges. Some variation would be nice - the edges are creating an odd billowy look.

And an update.

This one is more in line with eck's edit. I'm trying to use a wider range of colors from the palette - no sense in letting the other colors go to waste. It seems I might as well pick out four of my own colors if I'm going to do that.

Made some adjustments. The eyes are no longer looking up, and I got rid of some shading that didn't seem to be helping the picture.

Here's a quick edit. And I don't mean to suggest you need to go with a black background - just a darker one.

Also, I'm a new guy too, so by all means take this with a grain of salt.

For starters, I'd say that the brick wall tiles in the background are a little distracting - the black outlines carve things up a bit. Try swapping the black for a lighter color - maybe a dark purple.

Also, looking at other Tetris games, it seems that the falling blocks are always on top of an area that is either much darker or much lighter than the blocks themselves. In short, I'd try fiddling with the contrast of your backgrounds to see if you can make the blocks "pop" out more.

Sherman: I'm definitely going to use a more robust palette for later stuff, I just thought EGA would be an interesting place to start. I wouldn't want to paint my walls these colors, but it's fun to see what I can get out of them.

eck: Good point. I'm fiddling with the colors right now. Thanks for the edit!

The EGA palette restrictions seem to be any 16 colors out of a preset palette of 64 - according to Wikipedia of course. No other restrictions were mentioned.
I'm using the default, eye-burning set of 16 colors.
