I have a problem, and while its not as interesting as a flesh eating skin disease its come close to being just as annoying. I am a programmer, game designer, and web admin, but to my dismay, not an artist. As much as it wish I was, visual art is just not a talent of mine. I have found it difficult if not impossible to improve said skill to any great degree.

I am planning to bring to fruition a few small game concepts for commercial use. Obviously I need art for these projects, but the time frame and budget associated with such a small project do not lend themselves to me hiring an artist. This has forced me to do the art myself. While I have some experience in pixel art I have never been happy with what I produce.

My solution to my problem is to find a simple form of stylization for the art which would allow me to produce all the art needed for my projects myself. The style needs to be simple yet professional looking and usable in either top-down or side perspectives. While I am not a great artist I do have some skill. I will gladly lend an ear to anyone with an idea. Thank you.

[EDIT]: I should also note I am looking for something other than geometrical line art which is not professional (in this day and age) and been done to death anyhow.

well, first of all u've chosen some awkward colors :S
the other thing that is not a tomb/bed... what is it? rocky ground?
i think checking some real images of objects may help you as well as a good pallet tutorial

Check this one Check the colors and the ground texture
also, the stone block mustn't be at 90º from the ground so well, hope its helpful :)

I have a lot of problems picking colors, seems to be one of my bigger weaknesses. Thank you for the advice, since there were no comments about the other stuff I assume that the other tiles are good then?

Wow  :) I really love them. The amount of detail you squeezed into such a tiny face is unbelievable!

Another thing Leaf should point of is the banding on that area. Try to fix that.
Thanks for the tip. I tried to fix the facial banding the best I could...didn't really put my heart into it. Tried a few different things with the hair, couldn't find anything I liked. I have learned a lot from this piece, but it is time to move on. I posted the final version. There are a lot of things I wish I could fix about it, but I am happy with the final result non the less. Thanks to everyone who helped me along. Now...what to do next!

It looks like if you took his hat off, he would have most of his head cut off.

Here's what I mean:

The yellow line is where the head would be.
Kind of hard to explain. It makes it seem as if he only has about an inch of head in the hat.

Also, the hat is huge off to one side. It looks like it would just fall off him.
Thanks for the help, but its supposed to be angular, unrealistic, and exaggerated.......and hair.....hmmmm
