Pixel Art / Re: Pixel art from my twitch sessions

i have no critique per-say, since it is way beyond my level.

If this were my animation, I would attempt to add something on the other side of the row.  Maybe rows of corn or something one would expect to see on a highway like this.

Having gone the route of learning to pixel before I could draw normally, I highly recommend not doing that.

Start with normal art then scale down, it'll be a much easier transition.

There's a bunch of tips I can give you on that, like some resources for figure drawing and some general techniques, but it'd probably be best to start with one of the many resource-rich artist help tumblrs floating around in the blue debacle.

http://artists-help.tumblr.com/

There's a lot of resources on how to get drawing, but some of the most important methods I think are how to work with silhouettes, how to break things down into shapes, and the process of studying every aspect of something to draw it (for example, with humans it's recommended to draw a bunch of skeletons and muscle groupings so you can better replicate those areas of the anatomy)

Good luck, my friend!

Thanks man! You guys have been pretty awesome here so far.  I might just be starting out in art, but having perused creativity  for most of my life, I can appreciate the helpful, humble attitudes that seem to permeate this place.

Since my final goal is to be a pixel artist, and I do enjoy making pixel art, I still mix it in with my more traditional practice
(Which I've been at for a month or so.)

I have found some really good channels on you tube, and will be ordering some books fairly soon.
Thanks for the link and good advice!

Been kinda interested in ISO for a while now.  Just a quick sketch/color.
Aware that the lines might Not be the straightest :P  I am working on that.

Thanks Jad!  Seefour, Here's what you seem to have after removing the filters and scaling:

This is what we would like to see, but if you ever do need to upscale pixel art, make sure that the new size is a multiple (e.g., 2x, 3x) of the original size. Your image seemed to be scaled from 66x66 to 100x100 (1.52x), which created unevenly distorted pixels, and there were some even smaller 1x pixels created by the filters you used after upscaling.  I suggest working at 1x only, otherwise you stray into strange territory.

As Decroded said, most of this image is rectangles.  I think you've mastered the skill of drawing rectangular borders and it's time to move on!  I wonder if you are doing what I did when I began drawing: instead of trying to draw what I was imagining or wishing I could draw, I only drew geometric stuff because I was comfortable with it, and I was quickly frustrated when I tried to draw a person or a tree or a dragon and it looked nothing like what I wanted it to look like.  Unfortunately this only caused me to become good at geometric stuff that I didn't really want to draw!

I like Jad's question: "What is your idea with this piece?".  I'd like to also ask: What do you want to do with pixel art?
whatever method u used to get that gradient, its not pixel art.
it also looks weird regardless like it was slapped on to hide that the underlying art is pretty ugly and devoid of any real design work.

lol.

hey sorry if it came across sounding rude.

my point is just that its just a box inside some boxes with some more boxes around it.
I can't get on a computer to demonstrate but removing the gradient would show this.

if I had a bit more time yesterday (was changing buses) I would encourage u to get some references of architecture u like and try some make some interesting designs, especially ones that give some impression of depth and form.

It's not a big secret that this is a series of boxes.  This was intended as a quick experiment in Photoshop, mainly using the light source filter.

that the underlying art is pretty ugly and devoid of any real design work.

tsugumo's first rule of pixelation: don't be an ass

either Seefour doesn't have the resolve to make their art better, in which case I'm pretty sure they'll lose motivation and stop posting without your discouraging them. Or they do, and we're about to see someone get better at art and be able to help out.

Saying "it's pretty ugly and devoid of any real design work" is a bit too mean. I mean, ugly is fine. If you really think so no need to beat around the bush, though I avoid being blunt with people I don't know because I don't think it's cool to be abrasive - devoid of any real design work would be supposing that the person you're criticizing actually knows how to do design work and decided not to; in which case it's justified to say "hey you forgot to do the thing you shoul've done".

But if it's due to the person not actually knowing where to start and how to do design work, then it's up to you to either help them out in learning how to do it, or refrain from replying.

This forum isn't here for people to feel better about their art abilities by telling other people they're worse at it - this forum is here for everyone to constantly get better. I know I did. SIX YEARS AGO *hyperventilate*

So anyway, Seefour:

- not gonna say it's not allowed to put a big fuzzy soft light ball onto your pixel art. I'm not a purist these days, but to a trained eye it literally does look like a super flat pixel art piece with a big soft light on it - it's easy to separate the two.

what you want is the illusion of light falling on a physical doorway with a shape, not a flat-looking doorway with an ill fitting light shining on it. Basically:

your underlying pixel art has pretty solid transitions between pixel colors, high contrast pixels next to each other. And then there's the soft light that creates ultra smooth color transitions between pixels. It doesn't match up. Not yet!

- what is your idea about this piece. do you have any inspiration for it, any ambitions with what you want it to look like? Do you have a project you want to use it for or is it just a stand alone piece?

- if you want people to be able to edit this, please post it at 1x size without the light. on these boards you can zoom in on any picture just by clicking at it, so 1x is completely fine in all cases.

I have more resolve than I know what to do with, thanks for in the input ;)
Thanks Jad!  Seefour, Here's what you seem to have after removing the filters and scaling:

With this peice, as I said, It was just a quick experiment with Photoshop.  Though I would like to thank everyone who posted here for their Input.  With my pixel art in general I want to make games.  I have the programming and sound aspect down, so art as a whole seemed like the natural progression.  I am actually learning the fundamentals of traditional art through digital art, and pen and paper drawing.

hi!

I think the depth of this would benefit from adding highlight and shadow.  it seems you do have some occlusion here, but imo you could expand on that also.

Cheers!

I've been here for a little bit, but just noticed this section of the forum, and this thread.

It's nice to see a place devoted to pixel art :)

I am a intermediate programmer, music producer, and a fledgling artist, hoping to produce my own games in the near future.
