Pixel Art / [WIP] Gargoyles Quest - Walk cycle
« on: May 20, 2015, 09:04:17 pm »
I'm always imagining remakes of older games and end up doing lots of art.
At the moment, said game is Gargoyles Quest for the Game Boy.
I love how the game merges both RPG and platformer elements to create something unique.

Here's Firebrand, the main character.

Was working on his walking animation and it felt a bit off:

Still tweaking the legs, but is the top to busy/wobbly?

Would love your view on it!
All C+C is welcome

I really like your iterations, you can see you have an eye for details.
Here are my thoughts!

This is my favorite and here are my edits.
  • I think your biggest gain would be from not wanting to outline everything. It's been said mostly for smaller sprites, but it also applies here.
You only have a few pixels to use, don't spend to much on outlining every detail.
  • Tried to fix some of the shading. The highlight implies the light is coming from the right, the shadows implies it's coming from above.
  • Removing the highlight in the bottom blue part of the dress makes it feel more like a whole.
  • I also replaced the near black outline with actual black and remove some unnecessary colors.

Looking forward to your next character!

Pixel Art / Re: rpg black smith help

I would suggest looking at more reference material. If you simply google stuff like blacksmith or blacksmith shop you find tons om image that could help you:
https://www.google.nl/search?q=blacksmith&source=lnms&tbm=isch&sa=X&ei=OUdYVfLZCILVygO7gIGYBw&ved=0CAcQ_AUoAQ&biw=1920&bih=1085

I'd love to see a burning hot oven somewhere in there, casting a red glow over the rest of the room.
And like heyguy said, don't be afraid of increasing the contrast. Make the walls darker than the floor so the player knows where he can walk.
Something I noticed is that your outline on some object (the forge and the dummy) are lighter than the rest of the colors. This makes them blend in with the background a bit. Making the outline darker will make them easier to read.

You could also try to define your shapes some more. The orc and human look like some blocks stacked upon each other and except for their color they are exactly the same.
Quick suggestions below:

Once the character has some better definition, it's not hard to add some details and make the character look like a blacksmith.

There are tons of ways to draw small characters. I would suggest looking up older NES and SNES games on http://www.spriters-resource.com/ to see how other people did this.
Looking forward to your next piece!

A technique I like to use is to outline object, except for the parts that are on the ground. This also makes them look less like they're floating above the ground. (I have to admit it doesn't look as good on the npc's).
Also, the angle of the shop is a bit off. I recommend making circular thing half of the width (2:1 ratio)

First off, I think the sprites look great!
I don't know if the rotating grandpa animation is meant to be shown like that, because the mirroring/change of the light source becomes obvious.
If so, it might be better to us a more top down light source.

I envisioned way more happening in the foreground like this quick edit:

I don't know if you wanted to show both the armies fighting each other? you could also have one side be regular people and one side the army.

You could fill the bottom half with soldiers and tanks, marching through.
Keep the silhouette on the upper half to symbolize someone standing up to them/standing up for his or her ideals (Maybe make people "look up" to him/her).

Curious to see what you will come up with!

If you want to go for consistency, try giving all sprites the same outline thickness.
The installer wizard enemy also looks more complex then the other enemies. Try making it just the screen, so all enemies are single items. (except if he's a boss character!)
(Like dpixel said, lighting is an issue as well. No more mirroring for you  ;))

Grimbee is right, keep it simple and define your shapes.
Also, don't be afraid to go for some bolder colors (more contrast and a small change in color), something like this!

Would love to see some more portraits in a similar style!

Also, I don't know if its Photobucket or just you, but for pixel art JPG is a big nono  :)

Could you please elaborate a bit more on what you want show in this scene?
Your technique is not bad, so I'd suggest to keep going at it! :)
