Pixel Art / Re: Raven Animation, shadows problem
« on: June 10, 2014, 02:48:37 am »
That is a BADDASS bird! Is trully the nicest bird in pixel history. I will study it more closely, i think it has some good definition in positions concern, as you say, its the entire back that tilts regardless the altitude of the body wich did not varies that much.
Im not gonna forget what you said, it helps and motivates me a lot, although the flying of the crow is not the same. As your bird(wich is awesome, specially the creepy legs! i do enjoy seeing this kind of repercussion in a trend, thanks!) the raven's body look more static in flying that an owl, but you capture the grotesque and violence of the downward flutter very good.
And for the tail, it was the worst thing to animate, im not happy with the results, looks kind like a fat mammal's tail, not even close to a feathery one.
Thanks for the help and the reference, and please show the evolution of your crow :)

Cels, thanks for the reply, at first i didnt think it would be a difference between what i did and what you think about the movement in consistence with inertia, but after some test, i can really appreciate your advice, you help me a lot, this is the current version::
after
befo
im very happy how it looks now, that gravity give him a lot of consistency, physically speeking.
About the shadows, i think that is not absolutelly needed BUT(big but) for now it looks kinda flat with just 2 values of black, none of them absolute or particulary pregnante, so my guess is that some highlights could be cool. Here is where i really have problems, im not verry good at shadowing, the best i do is some dithering, and it was for an old version(1)

Sorry for the late answer, i just forgot about this x)
I draw a lot more birds latelly and that helps me a lot, you are right about the big problem (didnt look like a raven) and it was because of the horrible anatomy that I did. This is the last one:

As you can see, the big improvement is about the natural pixel line, but it still is the big problem. I cant make the back going under in a natural flow, or it turns 45° or it just doesent look good. And for the shadows concern, I try something like this:

anyway, any edit abut that would help me a lot
thanks for the reply :)

I think I was not very clear: it has NO SHADOWS at all. Sorry the english n___n
I get the point of the head, it was something I see after the big improvement of the animation
(old one)

The thing is, the player is a bird in constant flying, like a hummingbird, it just stands there ad waits for the prey. At no time stand still, so the flying IMO shouldnt be the same for a movement fly. Also, at the low res its made, i think it would be very unnaturall to swing the head, just a feeling, I didnt really try it.

Pixel Art / Raven Animation, shadows problem
« on: May 21, 2014, 07:12:07 pm »
So this is an animation ive been working on recently. Its a character from a videogame, wich consists in a semi-platform game, without camera movement, where you play with a constant flying raven. The flying is automatic, so the user only gets to move it rigth and left, atacks and dashes.

EDIT: this is the original ↓, i had it with the values flipped, sorry

The fluency looks kinda cool to me, same for the design itself, but in shadow concern, i have no clue. In fact I add it some shadows, but unfortunately the program crashes and all that work just go******** u__u
I appreciate opinions in general about the movement (naturalness, speed, feeling, whatever..) and some specific tips on how to add shadows, or a simple edit would be awesome, even on just one frame, to know where to begin.
thanks saludes

A little update of the wizard. I change the perspective from the first one, now it looks very good to me but im not sure of the colors, and the proportions. In case you wonder, it will not have arms, just a robe and the nose x)

It still needs a lot of work, but i dont wanna start animating without some feed from you. C+C WIP and the thanks :)

Hi, i wanna share you the program I use to make animations and to check sprites, is really simple to use and weights 1.20 megabytes. Although it didnt fit for all the process of pixeling, it has some bugs....but again, for create a gif, is pretty straight forward
http://www.aseprite.org/

The other program I use is GraphicsGale, something odd but also very powerfull, but is not free like Aseprite
http://www.humanbalance.net/gale/

I would like to help you but im really new in this and im only gonna entanggled myself in an answer that probably dont help you
Keep working :)

Pixel Art / [WIP]Raven thing

Saludes. I recently look at my profile picture and decided that is made in so few pixels, that simply didnt look like a raven (the goal)
So i take it again and draw something like this

So far i cant decide wich looks better. The ravens doesnt have the feathers in vertical position, like the first, but the other way....is just ruining my life. I'm gonna add some lighting, maybe thats the problem with the second one. the first is absolutly unreallystic

Any advice for this bird?? thanks :)

Pixel Art / Re: 16 bit Band Logo

Ok, Hi first of all :). As Manupix says. you are in a pretty complex area: typography design plus PIXELART, nice x)
From my experience, you should begin in other way. Start just from a separeted part of a typographyc logo could and would give you headeaches, since maybe you find the proper style and then you'll try to implement it on the rest and it didnt work out as you spected.
My recommendation: draw and sketch the logo COMPLETELY, i mean in paper. Find a way that is concise, it does not weaken itself, and with the least amount of uneven white space.
I guess you wanna make the logo in Uppercase, is a good thing, but watch the L and C of FALCON, between those two letters exists a big blank space that you have to look carefully.
Regarding literalize the idea, sometimes works, sometimes not. If you make it visually obvious, could work really awesome, but it takes a lot of work, because usually it is done in a very subtle way.

Here some webs to inspiration....most of this would not gonna help you since is design for brands, but if you take the time to look at them, after 20 or 30, your brain will give you some new ideas. I hope this helps :)

Im glad of your feedback, i was looking exactly that kind of criticicsm... about the syle itself: environment feeling, proportions and stuff.
The oldman is the second placeholder, so im figured with the time is gonna chage a lot. For my perspective, is too 2D, makes it very plastic, im gonna try some others perspectives
thanks for the tip, ill be looking and trying tutorials, there is a lot here and in pixeljoint....like for 2 years a learning x)
cheers
