There really are no shortcuts with pixel art. Just like with any other art. You have to do tests and practice to learn and get better. Until you have done a test sprite of your character, or at least a sketch of them in any other medium, I doubt anyone can give any more helpful constructive criticism. Once you do though, the fine people on Pixelation give fantastic help and recommendations!

We also don't know what style you will go for or what you like soo.... A good point to start with any pixel art is to look at sprites from games you like the pixel art of, and take inspiration from them (don't just edit them or copy them straight off though). Haha, this is so awesome! Great effort and creativity everyone! There's so much great stuff to look at here, but I especially like Peach's little austronauts + Larwick's cans, JJ Naas' girl whose hair turns into spaghetti in big brother's tile at the bottom there, ilkke/huZba's robot and Perciv@l's monsters.
