Thank you both for the comment, the work is not finished yet, so that's why the cane in rather poor in details...
The material of the head should be mahogany (red-ish wood, used for carving).

Cesque, you are right about the neck and about the fusion of the two pieces (the handle and the cane), as Pistachio says, it's not only a palette issue, but aso a matter of detail level

You are also right about the inconsistent lighting of the two pieces, which is hurting more than the pillowing, imho..

thank you again for the comments, will post the update soon

edit: now with animation!!!
edit:edit: not actually... :(

Edit: no animation since imageshack want me to pay :(

Hello everybody, it'a lot of time I do not post something original..
so, here we have this  phoenix head-spahed umbrella handle, with the reference image on the side

more recent

it's still a wip, anyway, before I finish, do you think it is pillow shaded? (or "do you see any other major faults?", by the way..)
thanks  :)

It's becoming a really good piece, instead of gas or liquid it's becoming leaves and groove, imho.
I did a small and fast edit to suggest you:
1) to use more contrast (but this is up to you)
2) to consider lightsource a little more and use shades to convey contrast (expecally for the behind leg)

hope you like it, it was not done with pixel tools though, so sorry :P

I did a fast edit, obviously not with PA tools, but it's just to show you.

Hope it helps.

my take on your sprite

essentially I
- lowered the numberof colours
- increased the contrast
- put a neutral BG (beginner always skip this, but it is a really important step  ;) )
- did some AA (especially in the face)
- did some selctive outlines

take what you like :)

An example of what you could do with the same resolution if you are able to overcome your urge for outlines and listen to the good hints people is giving you:

Try to do what people suggests instead of keeping just posting your new frames.
I assure you that people around here is a selection of the best pixel artists in the world and always has a deep insight of what is the work of pixelling; at least this is what I think concerning my experience.

Pixel Art / Re: Seat panda (car)
« on: May 04, 2010, 04:49:04 am »
About the car:
  • The wheels need to be larger.
  • Above the wheels, the hole is supposed to have a slightly arched and non-flat shape.
  • Shading suggests a slope change around the height of the door handle, which doesn't actually exist.
  • Around the plastic exterior panels, there is no metal visible at the bottom or at door edges. It's all plastic-covered.
  • The rear portion of the body is too thick. It should be about twice the combined thickness of the window frames in the middle.
  • The rear view mirror is unclear, and there is no trace of the characteristic black trapezoidal hinge cover below it.

[...]

questseeker, some of your critiques about the car are absolutely right and I agree with them.
But, you should have presented them to the car designers as well:

http://www.google.com/images?hl=en&safe=off&gbv=2&tbs=isch:1&q=marbella+seat&sa=N&start=54&ndsp=18

the n-th (odd) case where reason is overcame by reality...
anyway, lemoncas, try to use some reference when pixelling, and if you are using it, link a picture :)

some critiques:
  • The wheels need to be larger :)
  • The radiator should be slanted
  • The top of the car looks larger than the bottom [\li]
try improving you piece
in hope of being useful

3 things (I'll be direct):
- the chin is not AA-ed like the rest is (also the violet vest on the sides, but that will be really hard to get, maybe it would need to change the slant of the external lines to straight)
- the contrast is low, it can be a stile issue, to keep the piece "dolly" or it can be due to the fact that
- you are pixellig on a white background, which heavily tricks your eyes and gives you a wrong perception of contrast and colors, try editing this piece on a neutral BG, like the color of this forum (color that was not choosen random by the maker of this website which are all very good and expert graphicians and pixel artits). Also when you start a piece use this or another similar (intermediate saturation and light) color as a BG, doing this will save your time.
P.S.: you left 4 white pixels from your BG that's the base of last point of critique.
P.P.S.: O.T.: is graphicians an english word? or should it be graphicists?  ???

good work, keep going :)

If so we meet in the same forum after meeting in the real world many years ago...
