Crazy Asian - I haven't really done much pixelart in the past 6month as my job involved mainly vector art for webgames...

Ai - true... I took the quick and dirty path... atm. it's all just testing and playing around with a new ways to create content quicker by using the 3D models for the definition of proper light and shadow and perspective.

Helm - I agree this style would not work for an action title as you can't control the background enough to ensure good playability... but these scenes are cutscenes only - static with some text on top of the image... and yes... the speed is the main issue in this exercise as it is for homebrew gba project I am helping out with some pixels to replace the "coder art"...

Pixel Art / 3D based backgrounds for pixeled sprites
« on: December 23, 2005, 06:03:51 am »
!! Warning !!
This is and doesn't intend to be "pure pixelart" - whatever some people think that is - but a simple sharing of an interesting approach that might be helpful to some.

I am playing around with easier ways to create backgrounds with a dark dungeon atmosphere for cutscenes in a GBA game and turned to 3D tools to work out the perspective and shading of the backgrounds. I am taking those into the paint program to modify them to a less rendered feel before adding the sprites on top.

Here is a step by step [ still missing text though ]

I used Silo to create the basic 3D model, Bryce for the rendering and PhotoPaint to touch it up.

The piece is great... just the way it is... what is it with desaturated images? The use of colour is great, bold and it work well for the piece.... Thanks Razz for showing the fully saturated one...

As for the "pillow shading" - another "wonder word" on this board... "I detect some pillow shading..." ... "oh no, this is pilow shaded" - What a load crap in this case... the light source is centred and the symetry of the piece is par of its' charme and simplicity - underlining the japanese theme... as well as the harsh contrasts...

I love it... leave it as it is... great job...

I disagree... to me it looks great - nice 2D take on a 3D character and the flat look in some areas like the hands fit fine...

;) Nice to see something new coming from you, Kenneth...

Imho that size clearly defeats the purpose of pixeling... Why would you try and cover a huge area like that pixel by pixel instead of using a more painted approach.

Crits.: The character is off whack... he looks like hes leaning forward in an awkward way... the shoulders are not level - looks even worse with the shield on the one shoulder... Grass - I assume this is just a first sketch and you will add more detail and variation to it... and it will be a pain and a half to do...

Good luck!

Kazuya Mochu - the whole shape had a black outline in the early versions and I have take the harsh edge off in places...

Mjonttu - I thought the hair was fixed in the edit... and the green thing is another "pixel" hanging off dad's leg... took that one out...

Thanks, Helm... you picked all the points I wasn't happy with... but seeing I played with this figure for 1 hour today - while I should have been working on "real work" I thought I share this... I will sit down and redo those elements in the next few days...
As far as colour goes... yes... it could probably be reduced to 24 - 26 colours or below - 32cols is just a number I like to work with... :)

[updated] could have it sit there unfinished... :)

I am starting to enjoy the pixeling for fun... doesn't help with work though  :-\
[ but hey... another late nighter  :) ]

PixelDad - thanks to Chilly for giving me an excuse to avoid work even longer...
