Alkaline - many thanks, I love it. Especially the staff with the little snow globe on the top - nice touch!

I managed to receive and open it just before the end of Christmas day so at least I got one present to actually open this year which was a really nice little bonus at the end of the day. :)

A lot of great gifts and a lot of fantastic work. A couple of fantastic game mockups in there, and some great animation. Congrats all who particpated.

圣诞快乐大家!

Well.. just less than an hour left of Christmas day here - guess it'll be boxing day gifts instead :(

Anyone from Australia / Japan of course - it's already the 26th.

I haven't actually commented here, but have been lurking and watching the development. I seriously love the style you have got going on here particularly you mechanised enemies.

The Bumblebot: I love the overall composition and especially the design. Nice powerful sting that beast has. As for CrazyMLC's comment about the smaller caliber.. I think that would best be left to a Waspbot cousin of this one. The rotors still have slight readability issues though.. I had to look at all the various images of it to fully appreciate them. Are both rotors spinning the same direction? Just wondering if making one clockwise the other anti-clockwise would help or hinder.

The Deathbot: Beautiful movement - especially the 'taunt' animation. The only thing that I find awkward is the huge amount of flash on the hull. It seems rather excessive for the size of gun mounted on the top.  While it might give a great effect when you only have the one enemy (like you did at the time) I can't help but feel this 'huge' flash will diminish the fear induced by potentially bigger weaponry on later enemies. In fact, the guns do seem smaller than the cannon on the bumblebot yet the kick and flash are much stronger.

Buildings/Scenery: The almost toy-like appearance works so well and adds so much charm. I can almost imagine you posted scenes as a panoramic 360° scene from walking around the top one such large building.

At time of posting the tally reads as 31 submitted, 44 nothing yet. Thats only just over 40% :(  :n:

For the last few weeks I have been on a very busy work schedule awkwardly spanning 3 timezones each separated by about 8 hours. Thus I needed to make extra time somehow... easiest way was to just forgo personal hygiene, cooking and sex for a week. Well.. no sex was really because of my girlfriends unwillingness due to my lack of cleanliness... but hey ho.. I got it done - and now I'm starved!! I could have gained a little extra time I suppose by putting a bucket next to my chair to avoid most of the toilet trips, but I guess that's just where you have to balance 'slightly rushed' and '100% polished'.

From the outset, I was skeptical about whether my assigned recipient would contribute, and pretty doubtful if even his intended recipient would produce anything on time... still hopefully the gifts will get rearranged somewhat amongst those that rose to the challenge and made their own sacrifices to bring some happiness to others and hopefully some tighter restrictions next time round on who is allowed to sign up.

Anyhow.. gotta go for a shower and then find an all-you-can-eat style restaurant. Oh.. and then pick up some wrapping paper for it on the way home.

Just thought I'd throw in a quick edit. Initially because the turret seemed to have the wrong light source and I couldn't help but have my eye drawn to it. Also tried to take out some of the very long straight highlights - that at a small size, with such high contrast overpower any other details the tank has. Then I fixed the perspective of the roof rivets, and added a couple of odd details to the side of the tank. Lastly I did adjust the palette slightly to try and remove some of the sharp contrast  and to also allow the greys to be used better amongst the oranges for shading. I also changed the single use 'green' from your palette to a darker orange/brown to use in place of most of the inner black lines.

I won't claim my edit is all that great - or even that it is better. As a tank.. I'm not overly keen on it..  as an edit.. I think it at least addresses a few issues even if not providing the best solutions.

Hehe I'm in a similar boat to Vierbit with my 480x320. Still.. I have it mostly done - but certain parts could do to be touched up. Hopefully I'll get the time to polish it up a bit more before tomorrow night.

(really wish PSP had a timer that told you how long you spent on a piece, that way if you give yourself a time limit you could close the window and go off in between while keeping your time, not to mention I'd know how long I spent on pieces like this. Most people would probably find this stupid though)

That would be a really cool feature for any art program :) especially if it took 2 readings.. one for when the cursor is active and one as a total.. so you can easily compare pixeling time with 'staring and pondering' or 'getting a coffee' added in hehe.

At the moment, despite the texturing it still appears very 'thin' and flat on every side.

I've made a couple of quick edits to part of it:
  • added some highlighting to edges (window frames / door frame / beams)
  • made the main beams stick out a bit more than the panelling
  • re-did and simplified your chimney brickwork. Your brick-offsetting is very minimal in your chimney. Usually bricks are placed centrally over the gap between bricks on the row below - not just slightly to one side. You do not need to use so many colours.

It could really use more contrast - i.e darker shades for the front-left face and more shadowing under the eaves of the roof, next to main support beams etc.

Still.. hope this gives you a few ideas.

A roof doesn't usually end flush with the walls. There is usually an overhang - as well as guttering and drainpipes. What is the roof? Tiles? Corrigated iron?

As for the walls, the wood texture is a good start, but what about adding in some 'wear and tear' some less-than-perfect joins, some cracks, stains, and yes.. other features like windows/sills/drainpipes/possibly power supply feeding into it?

I also think (structurally) Just the four corner posts/beams is not really sufficient to hold up a builind of this sort.. let alone take the weight of such a large roof.

My first comment would be about the lightsource. It seems to be confused somewhat.

If you look at the darker sides, (top right slope and top corner slopes) This would suggest a lightsource from somwhere between bottom left and bottom.

If it was exactly bottom-left then the right corner slope would be the same as the top corner slope, if the lightsource was directly from the bottom, then the top-left slope would be the same as the top right-slope. So whilst it is neither, the lightsource suggested (from the shadowed edges) falls somewhere between the two.

If we now look at the lit edges, then it would suggest a lightsource somewhere between directly left, and bottom left and, again, not actually exactly either, but somewhere between.

Hmm.. so which is it? The lightsource indicated by 'lit' faces differs from that suggested by the 'shadowed' faces.

As for the angles of the slope, that is ok (and even verging on the 'good' side of 'ok') - if you are planning to have a very uneven hilly surface. However, if the slopes are only few with larger flat areas, then a slightly steeper slope might help emphasise the fact that there is a slope involved.

You will really need slightly more shades of green than you are currently using, with a wider range than you are currently using to correctly shade the ground with increased contrast (for the faces).

Hello,

I'm interested in the job of which you have specified.

I have 5 years experience creating graphics for licensed GBA & mobile phone games and about 3 years in the Nintendo DS industry. You can find my portfolio and work history here: http://joshastorian.com. (You will need firefox to view at the moment) Heres a link to my current resume: http://joshastorian.com/Resume_JoshAstorian.doc and you can find a letter of recommendation from a Director from the licensed game developer "Wayforward Technologies" whom I've worked for the past 3 years here: http://joshastorian.com/Josh_letter.doc. I'm great with deadlines, and I can adapt to whatever graphical style that's needed.

Please get back to me as soon as possible.

Thanks,

Joshua Astorian

In all fairness and assuming your situation to be true, why were you still trying to take on new work when you appear to have current unfulfilled obligations to other clients, and no means or time to satisfy new clients. You are not doing anybody here on these forums any favours whatsoever by such actions.

I sincerely hope you can sort yourself out and sort things out between those that have posted complaints and concerns here. I know very well what it is like to suddenly have ten tonnes of real life shit suddenly bear down on you, so for that I can sympathize with your situation, and I hope you can mend whatever fences you seem to have crashed through in the process. But, to continue the analogy, please don't go breaking down another fence to get wood for the ones you've broken.
