General Discussion / Question about top-down perspective
« on: February 01, 2022, 03:01:07 pm »
So I use circles that have 1/2 the height compared to the width to establish my angle and keep it consistent. But that's for objects, but I'm making a basketball court and now i'm not sure. Should the ground center circle just be a 1:1 circle or 1:2 circle?

Thanks!

Ah thanks! Yeah I know how to draw 1,2 and 3 point perspective. But with pixel art I feel like sometimes there are these unspoken 'rules' on how to be consistent and I start to doubt myself. But I will try to keep everything you said in the back of mind when drawing. Thanks!

General Discussion / Perspective in top-down pixel art?

I still don't really get this one:

What I figured out so far is that the height of my circles are half of the width. But let's say I have to make a tree how do I know how big the top part is and how big the front is?

Because let's say the tree stump in the tutorial is taller and the hole stays the same size then the ratio is lost, right? So on what ratio do you base the sizes on? So how would you edit the ratio for it to make sense with a taller trunk (front), but same hole size (top down)?

Also according to my circle ratio I should make grass that is more top-down than frontal, but frontal grass just looks so much better...

General Discussion / Different colors on different screens
« on: April 05, 2021, 03:50:51 pm »
I was wondering how you deal with different screens? I mean everyone is going to have a different setting, but it's really bugging me. I work on my laptop and TV (both different) and at this point I don't really know what's 'correct' or most widely used. The hardest color is green, because it turns blue on my tv and it's kind of a big difference. I usually adjust my color to my tv because it's the same as my friends' screens.

(I wanted to post a pic for reference, but the attachments option doesn't give me a way to upload)

Well I'm not always sure about the viewing angle tbh. I know my angle is the 1/3 circle i talked about that makes sense with the rest of my art. But when talking about rectangular objects, I don't really know. I just draw what makes sense optically? I mean, if you make a house where the front is 60px, u don't have a set formula for how big the roof is gonna be, right? You just make it as long as you think it looks good (and in harmony with the rest).
Same with the boxes above the crates example, the left one is a box lying down, middle is a cube and the right one is a box standing up. I don't really see how perspective comes into play? I mean if you follow the 1:1 ratio, not all objects will be 1:1. Maybe I'm just not seeing it?  ???

General Discussion / Octagon in top-down perspective?

How can I make a octagon in top down perspective? I know with a circle that the height is half of the width, I'm using one third of the width. But an octagon keeps looking off. Any tips?
