I assume Pixel Joint's and Pixelation's entire userbase would like to play it. Who among us doesn't have roots in the 8-bit, or at least 16-bit era?

Yea good point.

I'd give it a shot, the main thing turning me off is the tactical rpg genre itself though :p

ha fair enough, as long as it isn't the 8-bit :)

General Discussion / Would you play a free game with NES graphics?
« on: May 02, 2009, 03:45:09 pm »
Hey, so I've been nastalgic for my old NES games recently, playing them on ROM and all that. About two weeks ago I got the idea to create a new game using NES technology, the 8-bit limitations and using the limitations on music and sound. I was wanting to create a tactical rpg, with actual immersive dialogue (unlike all my old nes games) harking back to the old days. I dunno, am I alone in this? I don't seem to be getting good responce on other forums, and certainly wouldn't want to spend the man-hours to make a game no one will play. So meh, whatcha guys think?

Pixel Art / Re: [WIP] Sprites and things~

I actually used a tutorial I found here and it seemed to do just that but upon closer inspection there is a slight change of position:

Except that this tutorial has been critized previously in that it does *not* start with extremes as it pretends. Extremes of a running animation is frames where your foot hit the ground, thus frames #2 and #6 rather than #1 and #5. Plus, your character's head is almost facing us, and you make her running with body in a complete side-view. If you instead have 3/4th body view, shoulders and hips will be separated, meaning that the running sequence will be easier to read.

Quote
It's hard to do really minor movements like that at this size, though. I guess I'll look for some more tuts!
If you ask me, your character's body is terribly small compared to his head (it's almost 1:0.5:0.5 for head-torso-legs sizes in the running animation; new standing pictures are a bit better, i'd give 1:1:1 a try if i were you)

Yea I was noting that, the contact positions are being treated as the extremes. I think the tutorial is useful though, but it teaches some bad habbits. If anyone is seriouse about animating, I'de recommend getting richard william's "the animators survival kit." I have a copy in front of me right now, as it's the best thing for animation of any kind, hand drawn, 3d, or pixels.

I love this run cycle! The animation is amazing, great use of squashe and stretch, and great personality! For my tastes, I would add a bit more contrast to the skin, making that green shade darker. But you have nailed the animation here, I wouldn't touch that.

General Discussion / Creating ISO maps?
« on: June 12, 2008, 05:06:19 am »
Hey everyone! So I seem to be taking on more project than perhaps I can chew in pixel art (I've just started joining in on the fun world of the pixel, and am right now working on pixeling a photo, and animating 3 different sprites... but darnit I want to do some iso maps!)

So I'm wondering, how would I go about setting up ISO tiles and creating an ISO map? I'm using Photoshop cs2 as my weapon of choice, I don't really have any other software at the moment (other than illustrator, which is like the enemy of pixel art :P )

I'm having trouble finding tutorials and such. normally the first place I'd look is spriteart.com but what's his face took down his tutorials, which I'm thinking should be considered a dark and scary day in the history of pixel art. It's like the end of an era or something.

So any help anyone can give me would be MOST appreciated, thanks guys!

Yea I see what your talking about. I think I'll add one more frame actually, I have an idea with it.

Thanks a lot!  ;D

Pixel Art / Portrait, need critique
« on: June 10, 2008, 06:24:58 pm »
Hey everyone! Okay so I've decided to take a very short break from those small sprites I posted (which still need some more critique if anyone is up for it :)  ) to do something larger. The idea behind this is, one I needed an avitar, and two - I wanted to do pixel art on a larger scale and with very limited colors. SO! It's a work in progress, but I want to know if I'm headed in the right direction. This for me would count as something of a second attempt at pixel art -

and here is the photo I'm using -

To do this I spent a lot of time studying that mono-lisa remake Helm posted (but did not do ((I don't think he did it... I'll re-check and update this))) in the master remake challenge thread. I was blown away by the use of few colors to represent so well an amazing painting.

I'm using even fewer colors here, so I'm wondering if I've used dithering correctly? It seems to be the best approach when doing skin tones on a larger scale.

I was hoping to do a simple animation with this when I'm finished. Right now I've used 7 colors total.

Perhaps you could change the color of the walls to a warmer yellow color. As it is now, the blue color is rather cold and unfeeling, certainly not the mood which should be exhibited by a Pokecenter methinks. Yellow is a pretty cheerful color.

Good work though. I think the tag looks fine.

What do they do with the pokemon that don't make it?

*gasp*
Could... that happen?

As far as the little pokemon center goes, if your wanting to re-vamp the game your probably spending to much energy on this one little shop. I think it looks fine, and the tag does kind of read as a doorhandle to me, so I dunno... once I knew it was a tag I like it a lot being there, so I guess it's up to your discretion. But like the guy above me said, i'd go for a really light yellow. Almost off-white maybe? I dunno really what color it's supposed to be. I never watched the show and only played it on gameboy (religiously.)

So kudos for bringing back childhood memories! *hug*
