General Discussion / Re: Animaki 2 (beta) is out

also i dont speak NL but i found where to register,

the only way to save your work is to register, login and update the picture (then save as) ?

Yes, I think you got it. Any works started by registered users can be re-opened after saving. However, once an image or animation is published, it can no longer be edited (unless a moderator sends it back to the user).

it looks really interesting, but i didn't test it a lot, can you tell if its possible to import a picture ? i'd like to draw from my detailed sketches I scanned. I have to resize them before then copy and paste ? which size ?

Unfortunately it is not possible to import a picture. It's been a policy of that particular website for over 10 years not to allow users to upload images. This guarantees that all images posted are the users' own works. But since Animaki seems to be gathering interest as a useful tool for pixel artists, perhaps it's time to revise that policy. In any case, pasting images will probably never be possible because for security considerations, this is simply not supported in Javascript.

It's understandable and far from useless! Your feedback is appreciated and the error will soon be fixed. :)

That's the idea. Of course the use of a skeleton is merely optional, but it can be a great help especially for those who have trouble making smooth or expressive animations.

Hello everyone!

A while ago I posted a message here about Animaki, a browser-based pixel art animation program. Now, one year after version 1 was created, I am proud to announce Animaki 2. It's still a beta, so there are some things I know I need to fix, but nevertheless it's already a big improvement over the last version.

One of the new - and as far as I know, unique - features is skeleton mode, which allows one to quickly create and test motions before getting to the actual pixel work. Other new features include multiple undo, non-rectangular selections, the use of selections as a mask, and autosave.

Here's a picture of the new skeleton mode:

Here are some example animations made with Animaki:

The program has been tested in Opera, Firefox and Chrome. It might also work in other browsers, but it does not work in IE.

You can give it a quick test run here: http://www.oekaki.nl/animakidemo.html (no installation or plug-ins required)

Please note that uploaded animations will only appear on the website after being approved by a moderator. Quick/sloppy tests won't be approved. If you want to save your work as an animated gif of animated png, consider registering an account on http://www.oekaki.nl/.

I hope you will enjoy Animaki and I look forward to your comments.

General Discussion / Online pixel animation program

Hello all,

Although I have frequented this forum for many years, I rarely post. However, I thought it might be interesting to you to know that I have programmed a fairly complete browser-based pixel animation program, called Animaki.

It has only just become available, so not many animations have been made with it yet. However, you can see some very basic examples here:
http://www.oekaki.nl/oekaki.html?post=124389#p124389

The website is in Dutch, which may be a problem, but the program itself is in English. You can try it out here:
http://www.oekaki.nl/oekaki.html?do=doodle (select "Animaki" from the "applet" menu)

If you create a user account, you'll also be able to load your saved animations. Otherwise, you'll have to finish them in a single session. Sorry about that, but there's not much I can do about it.

Some technical specs:
- It's made with Javascript and HTML5. Tested with Opera and Firefox. Other modern browsers (i.e. Chrome) should work too, but are untested. Most likely it will not work in Internet Explorer, because generally speaking nothing ever does.
- Up to 256 colors can be used. These colors can also be (semi)transparent. New colors are added to the palette automatically when you use them.
- Since it's made with Javascript, some features are limited. For example, it is not possible to paste image data from another program.

Here's a screenshot (sorry about the sloppy art, it's a work in progress):

I hope you'll give it a try, and have fun doing so!
