Pixel Art / Need some help with an isometric character

Roughed out some small isometric dudes in greyscale for an RPG project. I'm fairly happy with 6 out of 8 directions (still WIP), but the side-on (left/right) figures don't read like humans. Spent a lot of time on it to no avail. What am I doing wrong?

Also, I forgot to add torso details on most of them.  :o

Updated once more with a base figure that is much closer to what I want.

Never designed a user interface before, so it's pretty utilitarian. Might spruce it up with some vines and crumbly stone, like most RPGs.

I was playing Shadowrun for the Genesis earlier and was inspired by the futurepunk weaponry. Examining the pixelwork wasn't easy on the small screen (handheld emulation device), but I tried to mimic some of the techniques used.

Updated with a slightly better base figure (taller forehead, more muscly - still much work to do), some armour, and a couple groups of weapons.

I appreciate all of your advice, Basketcase and Fickludd. Apologies for the lack of shading overall... I was daunted by the task and simply opted out of it altogether!  :-X

Also, I agree about the papery look of the figure and have been working on it. Here's the latest update:



Just modified a few things here and there before I head off to bed. I realise that I didn't touch on all of your guys' points. Oh, and his hands are chopped short. Oopsi.

I've attempted to shade the ship with a light source positioned directly behind the craft in mind. I don't know if I'm pleased with my first try here. What do you see wrong with it?

EDIT: I think I like this one better.



EDIT DOS: Far happier with this shading attempt, subtle though it may be.

I realise it's been a long time since I last updated this, but I got the pixel art munchies and felt compelled to dig up Project 3STAGE. I've tinkered with the ships a little bit and have two candidates.

Which is better? (they could be equally awful, I suppose)

Oh, okay. I see what you're doing with the shading. I'm working on it, but the going is slow since I can't use MS Paint. (Mac... I hate the alternative programs.)

What do you mean by the middle shade, though? I'd like to know before I start work on the ship itself.
