General Discussion / Re: Book on how to do Pixel Art

Hi there wzl!

Thanks for the comment - I'll try my best to answer your questions to the best of ability.

The table of contents seems very much like it would handle most of the basic and i'd be interested if it extends on those. From that alone it seems just like a maybe more elaborate version of that one pixeljoint thread
- The pixeljoint tutorial thread is very good... But it is also fairly thin and doesn't speak at all about the pixel art's context within a game.  The book goes into far more depth and is streamlined toward creating for games - with a great deal of information on creating tilesets.

Is this a book targeted at beginners only or can experienced artists get something out of it as well?
- This book is targeted at both beginners and old hands but I think that more experience Artists are going to walk away with different things.  A lot of what is covered has to do with working efficiently and balancing high artistic quality with speed of production.

Someone who's been to Art school might jump past the chapter showing the properties of light and shadow but may get a lot out of how to translate those skills into pixels.  On the flip side, a Pixel Art pro might get some great tools for efficiency and project flow for a game dev project.

What kind of quality can we expect from the description and illustrations?
- This isn't really an attempt for me to flex my art muscles so much as an earnest attempt to explain some of the craft. There are roughly 400 images and most of them are explaining technique (rather than showing off a pretty image).  Most things are shown in pictures and there are whole sections where text is minimal; just there to explain the images.

Since indies, especially newer, inexperienced ones, are often times broke, i can imagine they'd like to see what they'll be getting before investing a sum like that.
While I hear the sentiment, I feel that people are likely to be very pleased with the purchase.  I've met plenty of super talented Pixel Artists that are make great work - but are figuratively killing themselves because they work so inefficiently.  If this book can speed up (or reduce) the workflow, then it should be well worth the price...

Not that I'm at all biased on the matter   ;D

Hey there - I hope this is the right place for this - let me know if this thread belongs in another location on the forum...  But I've got an announcement:

My book Pixel Art for Game Developers is going to be released this month!

It's 238 pages of instruction with over 400 images - but here's a link with a bit more information https://www.crcpress.com/Pixel-Art-for-Game-Developers/Silber/9781482252309.

Please feel free to ask any and all questions!

I think both of them look very good.  I agree with Pistachio that the posing for both of them could be altered to be more compelling, but the draftsmanship is very nice.  The dithering looks good, but would make animating either of them slightly less fun than a root canal.

I dig it.  Nice work.

Hmmm... It's a little hard to tell without seeing the full context.  I've found that you make detail work great so long that the color contrast doesn't conflict with the interactive components of the game.

Nice picture!

Hair is kind of interesting to draw because in addition to shading volume, it tends to have a shiny texture.  I find what works well is to keep parts of the hair matte, while other areas have a very strong highlight which shows in a band. You only had a few colors to work with, so I used the skin tone as the brightest highlight.

I made an example, yours is on the right.

Nice start!

A couple things that may be helpful:
1. You may want to use low contrast colors for the background/non-interactive objects and higher contrast colors for characters and platforms.  (I made an example)

That being the case,
2. It often makes sense to pick separate colors for background and for characters, even if it limits how many colors you have in each part.

Pixel Art / Re: Frog Key Frames

Hey there, I like what you have so far a lot!

I had a couple of suggestions:

1. Don't worry about the frame in between where the legs are  outstretched and where they curl back up.  It sounds like that may be the part tripping you up.
2. You could add a frame towards the beginning and the end of the frog squashing before it leaps and afterward before it settles.  I did a (very rough) mock up to show what I mean:

Interesting character.  You may want to simplify the texture if this character is going to be animated.  That will both make it easier to animate, and help to avoid accidental pixel flashing (like the character's right shoulder).
