Pixel Art / Kain's Animated Battle Sprites
« on: March 20, 2012, 08:55:58 am »
Hello and good day! I am working on some animated battle sprites for an RPG project, currently have a few in the rough draft stages. Deciding on fully animating the characters during combat is a big challenge on my part, plus I have set deadlines for certain sheets I need, so it is important that I learn quick!

For now I present to you the rough drafts of what I've got. Feel free to point out where I've screwed up or give me advice on anatomy and yadda yadda because I'm still rookie animator over here! :D

Shotgun Fighter

All I've got for this one is the motion of him firing his shotgun and then cocking it, I haven't added the ballistics fire yet. I think some of the other frames I could possibly handle on my own so I probably won't post them, just need advice on these ones for now.

Sword Fighter

This isn't the first time I've made a swordsman sprite set, but this is probably one of the better ones I've ever made. The animated frames are 1.) idle (wait for turn), 2.) action selected, 3.) action pending, 4.) attack, 5.) magic casting, 6.) item usage. I was struggling earlier to create a defensive pose frame but, meh, I'll get there.

Anyways, critique and advice much appreciated!

Pixel Art / [C&C] Kain's Semi-Naked Templates II : Battle Animation
« on: November 12, 2011, 02:39:26 pm »
Hello again! This is a continuation of my semi-naked templates series, but I started a new thread to avoid clutter. Yes, time to once again exit my comfort zone and go into some animation, and now the fight is getting personal! This is what I'm working with right now...

I botched the sword attack animation, I don't know the secrets to making it flow naturally. Whats most mind boggling is trying to make a two hand attack like that, and perhaps I guess I just need to break out of my 64x64 frame limit. I suppose the whole "run up, hit the enemy, run back" thing looks dorky, perhaps I'll give them a slide approach, Mega Man X style.

If its not apparent, I'm going to attempt to keep the same general proportions from my earlier templates series. But yeah, I could definitely use some C&C on these W.I.P. frames!

Pixel Art / [WIP][C+C] Kain's Semi-Naked Templates (Maybe NSFW)
« on: October 04, 2011, 10:24:21 am »
Topic Goal: This topic is for various animated human sprites to be used in the project I am working on. Such animations will include mostly walking sprites, but might address other animations such as climbing, swimming, etc. I've only got some of what I have planned done at this point, but plan on expanding the set with different body types for both genders. Unless I state a template is finalized, all works are open to suggestions and feedback is appreciated.

Nudity Disclaimer: As these are 'template' sprites, you should expect some mild nudity here and there, mostly pixelated breasts. This is mature content, but not of a sexual nature, so only mature viewers please!

Current Progress

Sample Character

Current Objectives

  • Create "Average" body type (male)
  • Last minute fix-ups on existing sprites

General Discussion / Slate Tablets & Pixel Art
« on: January 08, 2011, 03:54:56 pm »
Good day everybody!

For the longest time, I've wanted to get a portable tablet (such as a Wacom) with some sort of a touch/pen screen, but thought it silly to shell out $1,000+ big bucks just to be able to pixel on the go. Well, as time goes on I still want to get something that'll allow me to doodle without being stuck to a desktop or laptop. The only problem is I'm not geek enough to know much about all these new iPads, Androids, etc...

I do know that HP Slate supports Windows 7, which is good because I would like to install GraphicsGale and the like to it, plus the 10 inch screen and resolution sound nice. There are other ones I've seen that have better specs 'n the such, but I am unfamiliar with both Apple and Android. For the latter, I had browsed google for its pixel artsy apps, and all I found was a half-arsed app with no undo/redo, then a bunch of fancy NPA photo filter and effects apps (which I don't really care for).

What kind of portable devices have you folks used or, better yet, recommend? I do like the bonus of having all the fancy media stuff (listen to my tunes at least), but the #1 reason I'm getting one is for pixels... is this even feasible? Should I get one of these portable media slate devices, or would a Wacom tablet be a better investment and easier to use?

I would like to hear your testimonials and recommendations on this, thank you in advance for taking the time to help me out :y:

Pixel Art / Vehicles
« on: August 30, 2010, 03:23:48 pm »
Hello and good day folks!

I have been planning for a game project based on our modern times, so with that in mind, I have been spriting different vehicles to fit into the setting. So far, I just wanted to make the basics; 1 car, 1 truck, 1 helicopter, I plan on making a bunch more different types and styles (and obviously, pallet swaps, hehe), but first I must ensure that how I have been doing it is effective and pleasing to look at, or if there are certain aspects I need to imrpove on.

Each sprite I'm attempting to use a somewhat limited pallet (16 colors avg), with the shadow of the vehicle and the need-to-be transparent part of the windows sharing the same color. Since the game is a run of the mill RPG, it uses the run of the mill RPG 45 degree-or-so top down perspective, which was probably the biggest challenge thus far.

Car

Tires are lacking detail and look very bland, I know. My hurdle right now is I need a good tire and rim design, and I need a set of these that are rotating. Dashboard and steering wheel coming soon ;D

Truck

Happy with the rim/tire design I guess, still need to make an interior (appologies for the shoddy looking windows, those are temp), and some other stuff; pixels speak louder in images than text...

Helicopter

The helicopter is a little different from the other two, needs last minute details like rudder, antenna, animate the blades, etc... not doing semi-transparent interior shot. Challenge here wasn't the perspective (don't need 45-ish degree view here) but rather the angle of it tilting forward. What I would like to do is, in each frame, make a visual 'whoosh' effect with the blades... if anybody has advice on that ;)

Anyways, C&C and feel free to mess with my work to get an example across. I'm hoping I'm not doing too bad so far!  ???
