General Discussion / Any good MOBILE ways to sprite?
« on: February 19, 2011, 09:32:18 am »
I kind of just want to lay down on my couch with something small (that's NOT a laptop) and sprite away.  Does the Ipad or something else have anything that's a realistic alternative way to sprite and animate?  I'd probably be willing to invest in something if I could just lay down sometimes and casually sprite my stuff instead of working at this desk I've grown to hate.

I've looked a bit.  So far I see no viable options.  Just some really crappy pixel art apps.

General Discussion / Your Business Pitch.
« on: July 06, 2010, 04:55:22 pm »
I think I'm just too honest or my pessimistic personality leaks onto my pitches.  I'll often get refused and I think it's because I have too many inquiries and ask too many questions while making the whole thing more complicated then the person might want.  Such as asking for screenshots of game styles they like (which I don't copy but use as just help) and asking for an in depth description of their vision of the visuals.  Emails often last like a dozen more responses than needed before I get accepted or refused :P.  I don't think I'd make a good salesman as there's people I know who do half as good at spriting yet get more jobs with their pitches (not that I'm the best or anything).

Should I just start just doing stuff instead of having a quiz like thing?  Maybe be optimistic and smiley faced all the time.  I think I'm too concerned with their vision of something when I can make something just as good or better most of the time.

What are your pitches like (assuming you pitch)?

Another reason might be cost but I already charge below minimum wage on average (significantly below).    :blind:

Basically I need some tips. Should I just throw a quote right away and say "yes sir I can do this!" or something like that?

I suck at quotes as I'll usually spend a LOT more time on something to get it perfect and end up making almost nothing for it.  If I over quote I scare people away but that's likely the more realistic quote and I can't compete with some of these people who do stuff for pennies on the dollar.

I'm not trying to make a huge business out of this and I'm not trying to live on it of course.  I'd just expect to make more than like $1 an hour.   ::)

General Discussion / How much do you pixel art people charge?
« on: November 22, 2009, 09:12:13 am »
For sprites and stuff...  Being someone who's new to the idea of charging I R confused.  lol I have no idea what's fair.  I mean realistically no matter how much I charge it wouldn't be enough to live  :P.

How much do you guys that charge get done compared to the pay?  There's three tiers I can see.  Time invested, quality and pay.  Time invested means nothing without a certain level of quality.  Some quality takes more time invested then most are willing to pay.  Etc etc etc...

I've asked before elsewhere and have been told vastly different things.  For example I asked how much people might expect to pay for Snorlax here (which I did for free for someone):

The answers I got were on average $5-20.  Yeah there's a big gap there.  The thing took me several hours too (I don't think I'm the fastest spriter out there :-[).

I mean I'm a n00b at asking for money and so far people have asked for quotes a lot.  I just don't know what to say.  Usually they ask for a quote per 32x32 or something like that (32x32 seems popular  ::)).

Pixel Art / Lava Tiles.
« on: November 20, 2009, 10:30:23 pm »
Lava is hard.  Give your opinions!

I'm 99% of the time a character spriter.  I'm giving tiles a go again.

Note 1:
I'm going to give into the pressure and reduce the number of colors so don't mention that.  :P

Note 2:
I'm going to squeeze in the borders a bit more because they make some corners too sharp when tiled.

Yeah, Pixel Art is pixel by pixel.  However I've personally found that can often be too restricting.  No, I'm not going straight to the Filter -> Render -> Lens Flare or anything like that.  But for some effects like blurs, glows, etc I've just found it much easier to do in a non-pixel by pixel way.  Am I a deviant?  A rebel?  A pixel poser? :D

Example: I'm currently doing some lava tiles.  And I just happen to notice they look better when I do some photoshop tricks to make it look glowy.  Better than I could do pixel by pixel.  Of course it's 100% pixel by pixel besides that and it's not like computers couldn't handle the now massive amount of colors.

I mean why limit myself?  I don't do it often.  My only concern is that if it visually fits naturally in the whole look at the end.  I might even still call it pixel art since it's 100% pixel by pixel minus some special custom effect.   >:D

Random thought that came into my head.  Your thoughts?

Portfolios / [Portfolio] CodeGeorge. Seeking to sprite for YOU!
« on: November 15, 2009, 05:53:15 pm »
EDIT: Temporarily not accepting new work due to a busy busy schedule!

Hello!
I'm a self taught spriter with experience spriting for a few projects, always for free in the past (I'm hoping to change this).  I'm technically a graphic designer who's made brochures and websites for people in the past but really, I like spriting more and it's been a fun hobby.

Currently I have a limited number of my sprites online.  I'm making my website so temporarily I'll be using DeviantArt for a pseudo-portfolio.  I make 100% custom sprites.  I make characters, tiles and anything that needs making.  My strengths lie primarily in cartoony things but I'm continually trying to learn more and can do that other stuff if need be.

Anyways he's my pseudo-portfolio:
http://codegeorge.deviantart.com/gallery/

Yes, I can make sprites that aren't Nintendo, Capcom or Square owned characters  :P.  I just happen to have those ones up and I love the characters.

So I'm primarily looking for PAID stuff.  However if you have a project that is just really amazing in some way I'll probably do it for free.

Please PM me any details about your project and what needs to be done for it.  I'll consider anything you throw at me.  It doesn't hurt to ask.  I'm REALLY wanting to sprite!
