Pixel Art / New ZX Spectrum loading screen for Ghosts'n Goblins.
« on: November 07, 2012, 08:03:17 am »
A few weeks ago, I had decided that I would go through some Spectrum games that had truly woeful loading screens and redo them, hopefully making them better. Along with is, my idea was to blog the whole creations from start to finish showing how I went about creating each loading screen.

I decided to choose Elite's software's conversion of Capcoms Ghosts 'N Goblins.
The game itself may not look pretty but played pretty aces. But the loading screen was awful.

So, after hunting around, I found that I really didn't like most of the original promo artwork from Capcom and so got to looking at their artwork for Ultimate Ghosts 'N Goblins. That's when I found this which I decided to use for the new ZX Spectrum loading screen :

After 2 weeks off and on, I finished this afternoon, and here it is. 2 versions, one without the logo and one with. I can tell you, it's been a real challenge.

Hope you like it.

And, here's a time-lapse animation of the creation of the loading screen.

Pixel Art / Berzerk - ZX Spectrum update
« on: April 14, 2012, 10:34:32 pm »
I'm currently working on an update of the classic Arcade game, Berzerk, and have opted not for the direct top top-down (but side on sprite) approach. As well as giving it a graphic overhaul and a set map, I've started on the graphics. Only done a single frame for the sprites so far, they'll all have 8 directions each with 4 frames of animation. Here's the single frame for the sprites done so far, a mock-up of the game screen (no borders or score or anything) and the updated logo for the game. The vast majority of the background graphics have been finished - I must post them up later. Still got quite a bit of graphics to do.

Pixel Art / Abobo Sprite for Double Dragon Remake on ZX Spectrum
« on: February 18, 2012, 10:15:58 am »
Started on the Abobo sprite for the remake of Double Dragon for the ZX Spectrum. This game has been in development hell for 2 years but now steaming on for completion. Just created the Abobo sprite walking animation. Not 100% happy with it. Fell I will probably have to clean up the leg animations including the dithering, but it's a reasonable start, I think. We've got a maximum of 24 pixels wide for all sprites walking.

Here are the 4 frames :

Pixel Art / Byte Me - New ZX Spectrum game
« on: September 30, 2011, 09:34:01 pm »
Started on the graphics for a ZX Spectrum game (coded by another) and the game is going to be released at the Replay Expo in Blackpool at the beginning of November. So, other than the constraints and limitations of the ZX Spectrum, I've also got time constraints. The game is set in a futuristic fast food diner where you fire either burgers or hot dogs at buns to make a hot dog or a burger for a customer order. I think it will follow the lines of Tapper only you have to make the food before delivering it to the customer. So, I've started on the graphics and here they are so far.

Main Sprite.

Burger/Hot Dog Firing.

Can of Boke (Health).

Slice of bread (enemy)

Hot Dog Bun (enemy)

Sesame Seed Roll (enemy)

Tomato (enemy) ..yeah, it's supposed to be a tomato!

And since 1 of the customer types is a Stormtrooper (I don't know, I was just told that this was to be the case), here's the graphic.

Still got quite a few graphics to do.

Pixel Art / Hutch the Rabbit [Early WIP]
« on: May 03, 2011, 03:23:56 pm »
I've been asked to produce some pixel graphics for a platformer with a design style of my choice. So, this morning I did a quick sketch then pushed some pixels resulting in the following :

Not spent any time on the colouring as I was just trying to get a 'feel' and I'm humming and hawing over the black outline, which I've been asked to keep (and I've always had a liking of black outlines due to my ZX Spectrum graphics). How do you think it's going?

Pixel Art / New Logo [very much WIP]
« on: November 26, 2010, 12:15:01 am »
I now need to get my finger out and get my website up and running and push for freelance work again. So, sticking with what i know best - lofi pixel a la ZX Spectrum - i whip up a new version if my logo.

This is the first draft - i temporarily put in that noisy grey fade out just to get some contrast but it is only temporary.
I'm going to try a colour version, i think, and a version at a slightly high resolution. Obv, with colour a hilite can be shown on balloon as well as the clouds and dinosaur. I actually need to finish the bottom of the dinosaur.

Still, early days on it.

Pixel Art / Disney Characters pixelized then painted.
« on: August 26, 2010, 06:33:48 pm »
I'm nor sure if this is the best place to put this post  :-[
I've decided a while back that I prefer painting pixels onto canvas rather than leaving them in digital format.
Of course, I create the pixel versions first digitally. I'm liking the natural rough painted look for something that is generally so precise and perfect - by this I mean the clean lines and perfect pixel squares as well as the colour.
I am curious to see what you all think.

The look and colours are deliberately kept simple as these paintings are for young kids.

First off, here's an idea what they look like finished. Both of these are acrylics painted onto 30cmx40cm canvas with each pixel approx 5mmx5mm in size.
Scooby Doo and Shaggy

Here are the next 6 images that are ready to be painted on 30cmx40cm canvas.
(You'll have to excuse the sizings as I've had to upload them to my Flickr account which has JPG'd the digital versions).
Phineas & Ferb characters

Here's the first Tinkerbell image ready to be painted (there's another 1 to come as well as 2 Toy Story ones).

And finally, here is what I really paint and sell. The ones above I do as gifts for friends, you see.
This image is of a portrait of my best friend. I've done it in the style of a ZX Spectrum including attributes and colours (okay, I took a bit of a liberty on the dull yellow, but it looks better).
Each smaller canvas is 8"x8" making the complete image approx 24"x24".

Pixel Art / Classic shoot-em-up explosion
« on: April 23, 2010, 08:14:52 am »
I'm finishing off some sprites for a ZX Spectrum scrolling shoot-em-up game and have eventually got around to doing the explosion.
I've plumped for the classic R-Type type explosion but something's just not quite right with it and I can't put my finger on it. It looks a bit 'wobbly' and I think it could be the sizings of the inside circle, but I'm just too close to it to properly see. I've only got 6 frames to work with and I'm pushing it with that, so unfortunately I can't add any more frames.

Anyway, hopefully someone can see why it just doesn't seem to 'flow'.

Thanks.

Pixel Art / ZX Spectrum Double Dragon remake WIP
« on: February 21, 2010, 05:47:32 pm »
After the original travesty of the original Double Dragon conversion for the ZX Spectrum away back in 1989, a small team has decided to re-write the conversion for the ZX Spectrum 128 from scratch. I've been tasked with producing the sprites with another artist doing the background graphics.
I've started with Billy Lee, one of the main 'heroes' that you play from the game and I've only just started on the basic walk sprite. Other than the colour limitations imposed for ZX Spectrum games, the only limitation I have is that the characters have to be 48pixels high rather than the original arcade 64pixels high but the number of pixels wide remain the same. So, here's what I've produced so far. Although it's an arcade conversion, I'mpretty keen to have my version of the graphics to have some element of my own in them and as for the walk animation, the arcade is pretty basic also with only 4 frames. Anyway, what do you think, comments would be welcome. There are 4 Spectrum versions of the sprite as I can't decide which one to choose.

Pixel Art / He came back after all.
« on: September 02, 2009, 03:29:50 pm »
I came across a shed load of Atari ST disks in my loft along with my Atari ST itself - rejoice.
Amongst them were some of my graphics disks, so using the power of magic* I've managed to get some graphics off of the disks.
These are the ones so far.

Ooff, the Terminator text just gets lost, doesn't it? I'm sure I did a version with an advanced version of Neochrome (ST gfx utility) where you could use multiple palettes which meant I could create a whole new palette just for the text.

Coming from doing graphics on a ZX Spectrum where anti-aliasing was impossible, you can see I've tried with limited success.....

Again, so used to the Spectrum's limited colour palette and quirky attributes and just getting used to having all these colours i.e. I wasn't really. I mean look at the rubbishy moon.

Anyway, these are about 18/19 years old and are untouched. I'll try and get more off these disks.
