Pixel Art / What Villainy Hast Thou Commited?[WIP]
« on: October 29, 2008, 12:46:55 pm »

Took a break from the animation (break? I haven't started yet!  :yell: ) to join a competition over at Pixeltendo.

The subject is "The Villain", and I opted for a more conceptual approach. Can you guess what villainy this shild is commiting? :>

Aaanyway, need help with his arms and that piece of crumpled paper. I crumpled a piece of paper myself, but still doesn't look right.

Pixel Art / 4-legged Running animation [WIP]
« on: October 28, 2008, 06:15:29 am »

So, yeah, tryn'ta animate again. It's a four-legged creature, running. Baccaman mentioned I could just make the other two legs lag behind, I'll probably use that.

Pretty satisfied, except for the head, so I guess I want crits on the head's movement. The legs I'm good with, but just point out the glaring issues with it.

Used a nature book for reference, it had a stop-motion reel of a cheetah running.

Oh yeah, not my design. Doing this for someone's project.

EDIT:
Oh, yeah, looking for ways to improve this animation:

Again, it's for another project, the style isn't my say.

2D & 3D / Minibot [first Low-Poly Pixel attempt]
« on: October 20, 2008, 03:57:27 pm »
I don't know what you call 'em, but I finally tried one.

After a few hours(yey, frustration) of fiddling in Anim8or and UV Mapper, here it is.
I wanted to start simple. Made a lot of mistakes; I edited that model and that texture about 6 times and still somehow didn't get it quite right.

Next time, I'll try shading the sides too.

Pretty fun learning experience.

One question; Is it advisable to do this with, say, low-poly spheres?

Pixel Art / Cubist Cube(Cubism or "The Square Dunce")
« on: May 24, 2008, 08:14:30 am »

Well, I tried something ala Helm's avatar and Ilkke's work.

No references (because no internet, hfff).

Any help getting the effect "cubist" pieces have?

Pixel Art / This game is so awesome you wouldn't even know
« on: May 14, 2008, 02:03:42 pm »

NOTES: It's such a hassle having to use Microsoft GIF Animator, especially since I'm used to Fireworks. The downwards walking uses the wrong head(it's squished). The downwards slashing is just positioned wrongly, but imo it's clear that it animates well. Really sorry, but animating in MGA is agh just so-!

I posted this here to mainly get help on the trees and grass. The tree (number 1), I really like, but there's something off about it, so a little objectivity might help. The grass looks a bit sparse to me.

Overall, I'm pretty happy about the sprites, but just need help with those particular things I've mentioned.

Hope this doesn't go like my last topic, hurrhurr  :D

General Discussion / Portfolio Review Questions
« on: March 30, 2008, 01:41:33 pm »
I know at least some of you guys have attended art school, and I know you probably had to go through a portfolio review (and then a talent test) to be accepted.

I have a portfolio review in a few days, and here are a few questions:

1) Should I put my best work in the front pages, or should I put the "doodles" in front, and build up to the good pin-ups?
2) Should I put the sequential art, doodles, and pin-ups together, or is it best to alternate? How about putting same quality work together? Or by chronological order?
3)Should I talk only when asked a question? Are statements like "Oh, I think that's one of my best" or "That's one of the worse ones" pretty taboo?

More when I think them up.

Pixel Art / Kankuro (WARNING: ANNIE MAY)
« on: March 18, 2008, 07:57:43 am »
Long time no post.
Here is a Kankuro (from Naruto) sprite I am working on.

So far, here's what I've got:

Idle/Breathing stance:

WIP Karasu(puppet) animation:

Mainly, I need help with the animations, because I'm quite happy with the sprites themselves. Though if you want to suggest ways to better them, go ahead. I'm just not going to edit them much.:X

Pixel Art / Running animation(let's hope this isn't a fad)
« on: November 08, 2007, 09:19:55 am »
Well, like I said, been trying a run recently, without success. Taking something from the other topics (zyndicate's, mostly), I again tried a dino sillhouette(sp?) animation.

Here is the body, which I think looks nice:

And with the head, which imo is decent-looking:

Do you think the head looks naturally attached? Is the mass constant all throughout? The more I look at it, the more I pat myself on the back for a good job, but tell me what you think. :ouch:
EDIT:
Tried shading it(lowest one):

Looks a bit flat to me, so I'm stopping here to get some crits.

Pixel Art / Wonder Boy in Monster World
« on: October 28, 2007, 09:23:18 am »
sprites:

a mockup of sorts:

Hello, I'm *attempting* a Wonder Boy in Monster World remake, and have been working at it for a few days.

Was inspired by Alex Henson-White's stuff, especially the mockups and animations: http://www.finalredemption.com/beta

I'm having problems with the walk cycle, and JWW mentioned the problem of the lightsource. He says it would be better if it was lighted from above, but I don't know, I'm used to seeing sprites lit in front, what do you guys think?

Will be editting the big mushroom, since I'm not too happy with it.

Pixel Art / Skull Kid
« on: July 31, 2007, 05:25:57 am »

You know, the usual reptilian-like thing with a skull for a head eating the usual gerbil-looking animal.

13 colors

Umm, CC?
