General Discussion / Color Pallets Technical Question
« on: July 11, 2008, 07:13:53 pm »
I have a technical question for some of the pixel artists out there that deal with limited color pallets.  I have a bunch of 16 color character images that I created in photoshop.  Now I'm trying to save them as 4bit bmps, but I need the color pallets to be identical when I convert the images (because of the way our compression works with our programming environment - this is for my work) - including the order of the colors in each pallet.  I've tried using graphics gale, but it re-arranges the colors in the pallet, so I have the same colors, but I don't have them in the right order. I'm not using photoshop CS2 for the conversion because it forces black and white and that means I'm losing 2 colors for each frame.

Is there a program with a batch convert that will keep the color pallet exactly the same when I convert from 8bit to 4bit bmp?
Thanks!

General Discussion / Freelance contracts?
« on: September 21, 2007, 01:42:14 am »
Ok, so Ive done a little freelance work here and there and generally people were pretty good about paying me.  Some people gave me a contract to sign others didn't.
So I did some work for this guy that owns a new website called zellomesh in July. He said he was really happy with the work and he paid me for it.  But I got this email from paypal today saying he tried to file a complaint and get his money back - from 2 months ago!  Since it had been so long of course they didn't take it back, but he never paid me for some work I did for him a few weeks ago (which he also said he liked). I mean it's one thing if the guy is unhappy with the work and asks for a refund, but he said he really liked it and he'd pay me for it.

Not only that, but after I went and read the complaint from paypal, it said that he told them that they were copywrited characters and he was being sued! Need less to say I was pretty upset. These were some of the little avatar paper doll characters I made:

Anyway, so I was wondering what you guys do to protect yourself from these kinds of situations. I've heard a lot about contracts, but I don't know what they need to say to protect my rights.  Any of you freelance guru's have any suggestions or examples of what a contract might look like?

Thanks

Hey, I posted this portfolio quite a while back.  I'm working full time at a video game company so I'm not available for contract work right now. Thanks.

Pixel Art / Attack Animation- Crits Please!
« on: May 19, 2007, 01:30:33 am »
This is the biggest character I've ever animated.  I also don't have a lot of experience animating, much less any sprites taller than 32 pixels, so I would definitely appreciate some critiques. Thanks.

Pixel Art / Pyramids WIP v1.2

This is a mock-up I'm working on.  I decided I'd try out adding some variation in my dithering in the background.  I'm going to add a hud later when I get the time and do some more overall polishing.  I don't know what I was thinking when I made this so big, but oh well.

Pixel Art / Small Dump
« on: April 29, 2007, 06:45:16 am »
I've done a lot of pixel art in one style, so I've been trying out some different things. For some of these, I was trying to make a similar style to some mobile games I looked up. I spent yesterday and today making these.  The portrait is my boyfriend.  He's not really Italian, but I thought the mustache was funny, so I left it.

Pixel Art / Desert Sidescroller Mockup
« on: April 16, 2007, 01:39:10 am »
I'm working on stuff to extend my portfolio.  This is my second set of side scroller graphics.

Anyway, I was wondering what you guys think about the anti aliasing on the green circle on the right?  Are there some other things I could add to make it more interesting in general?  I also haven't done a lot of huds, what do you think of the health bar and the item display on the right?

Pixel Art / girl WIP

This is just something I spent an hour or 2 making today.  It's bigger than I'm used to making.  I was having a really hard time with the arms.

Critiques would be great.

Pixel Art / Ninja's Attack
« on: April 11, 2007, 09:16:50 pm »
These are some menu icons I'm making for a mod my friends and I are making. Each icon represents a technique the character can learn.
The character is pixel art, the background is just painted.  Other than a little anti aliasing here and there on some of the lines/edges, I only used 3 colors on the character.

General Discussion / Portflio formats- what's good?
« on: April 07, 2007, 03:50:04 am »
Ok, so I've been emailing some companies in response to job postings and they ask for examples.  Right, so the 3D companies I applied at wanted demo reels, which is a movie format displaying your work.  So, for my pixel art I did the same thing.  I added the pixel art in my demo reel, set the compression quality to 100% so the images aren't distorted and sent the company a link to that, and to my website which has a bit less of my pixel art, but there's still a decent amount there.

So, I'm wondering if this is a good way to go about showing off my pixel art work to prospective employers?  Should I zip the images up and email them instead?  I mean they asked for a web address AND my work in digital format, so I'm trying to figure out exactly what it is they're after.

I know my work's got to be alright.  When I went to the game developer's confrence most of the companies weren't very interested in my 3D work, but they said my pixel art was great.

Also, how long do big companies generally take to get back to you?
