Pixel Art / First Character
« on: June 24, 2009, 11:18:10 pm »
Hi everyone, I've been doing pixel-art for a long time, but it's the kind of pixel art that you would only do for money (glitter hearts and animated phrases that say "hot stuff!", etc).

I'd really love to do art for a video game. People have recommended to me that I draw some characters to add to my portfolio, so I made my first pixel-art character today. Here he is:

This took around 3 hours. Just adding that detail because I don't know how quickly game artists normally work. I'm eager to hear your critiques, thanks!

(edit: I intend to eventually animate this character, but I wanted to get some outside input first)

(edit 2: I just read the rules section and it recommends giving details about how the picture was drawn. This was drawn with a mouse in photoshop from scratch, no references or anything. I did a little color manipulation after drawing it. It uses 47 colors.)

General Discussion / Art Swiping?
« on: June 24, 2009, 09:39:32 pm »
Hi guys, I have a question:

I've been a contract-based pixel artist for many years, but I've always made non-game art for companies (animated cursors, illustrations, etc). I want to add some animated sprites to my portfolio because I'd really love to make art for a video game. Especially something fantasy, which is probably my favorite game genre. You guys give excellent critiques, so I'd love to put these sprites up for your comments.

But now that I want to put art up in a public forum, I can't help but wonder: what's to keep people from just swiping your art and using it for something they're making? Is it just sort of an honor system? Or are there precautionary steps you can take before putting up your art?

It's not that I think my art is such hot sh*t, some of you guys could pixel-art me into the ground. I just want to know if there are any precautionary actions I don't know about.

Thanks everyone.

Portfolios / BrandonD's Portfolio

Hi, my name is Brandon and I've been a professional pixel artist for over 10 years. I can be contacted for work at this email address: brandon@nightdrivemusic.com

Some of my former employers include Ask.com and Kindle Publishing. My primary job in each of these companies was to create pixel art - for Ask.com I created animated cursors for their company Cursormania, and for Kindle Publishing I created pixel art for their education software called "HeartBeeps".

Here are some samples of my HeartBeeps artwork:

Here's a small sample of my Cursormania artwork:

I've also done a great deal of contract pixel art work.

I created all the character artwork for the online comic game "Wreck Sector":

I've also created pixel art for the games Pocket Boxing Legends, Tactikon 2, and ReconinForce:

I'm interested in hearing from employers, and also from any other pixel artists who have comments or critiques on my work. Thanks everyone for welcoming me to the site!
