First of all, I would like to thank you all for participating. Also, Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to all the people I couldn't reply personally.

Archived Activities / Secret Santa 2010 - The Sign up is OVER + All PMs sent!

So once again, it is that time of the year.

For those who are not familiar with the Secret Santa, it basically is an anonymous gift exchange activity.
As the name suggests, it has a mystery factor: You know who you are giving a gift to, but not who you are receiving it from.
Since we are Pixelation and all, we will be dealing with "pixel gifts"

If this activity caught your attention, please read this thread carefully.

Some things you should be aware of:

  • Only people who signed up before the PM send out will be able to partake in this activity.
  • For signing up, reply on this thread with a message on the lines of "I sign up" or "Count me in". If any message is not clear, it will be ignored.
  • Only sign up if you are 100% sure you can deliver a gift for your partner. If you do not deliver anything by the due date, you will be banned from the forums for a while and won't be able to participate in the next Secret Santa.
  • When signing up, add a few extra bits of info about you, things you like or dislike, hobbies, etc. You know, to make the gift making easier.

The Sign up starts today (Nov. 16th, 2010) and it will be open for a week or so (Nov. 23rd).
As mentioned, you can only sign up BEFORE the PM send out. Act fast before it is too late!

Soon after the Sign up is over, I will send a PM to all the participants with their partner's name (the one you should be making a gift for).

After that you will have until December 23rd to finish your gifts.
Once you are done with it, PM me the gift. Don't forget to mention who your partner is, as it speeds up the process of organizing the whole thing.

So remember:

  • November 16th~23rd - Secret Santa Sign up[/s]
  • November 24th (or so) - PM send out[/s]
  • December 23rd - Last day to send in your gifts!

Q&A

What kind of gift should I make?
As mentioned, we will be dealing with "Pixel Gifts". Just pixel something for your partner. It can be anything really, an avatar, an animation, a mockup... whatever you think that could work.

I will be away on December 23rd. Can I still participate?
Sure. You can always send me the gift before the 23rd of December (which is, in my humble opinion, recommended). As long as you can send something before the due date is over, you are good to go.

I couldn't finish my gift... Can I send a WIP?
Yes, but you will still get a strike... and you must finish it as soon as you can. Or else!  :mean:

Can I make gifts for someone who is not my parter?
Sure, but first focus on your partner. Once you are done, feel free to make gifts for anyone.


Wrapping

All the gifts need to be wrapped (hyperlinked) in one of these wrappers.
If there is any you'd like for you partner, simply mention it in your PM once you send me the gifts (just addresss to them as A2, B4, C1, etc).
If you don't choose one, a random one will be assigned.

Pixel Art / Dump

It's been a while since I posted, so here goes my recent-ish stuff:

- Secret Santa gift for AdamAtomic



- Gift for Mirre



- Smileys for a LEGO forum (will make more eventually)





- c64 with MCol restrictions. Ptoing has been asking me to do one of these for years, so finally went for it :0
It was quite fun, though I didn't try weird things.
Aaand probably you wouldn't easily find a kabutomushi flying around during the day, but I just added it for kicks.




I consider all of these finished, but if you find something you want to point out I'll be all ears.

Commercial Critique / Commercial Critique Challenge - Mock the Ocean's Sphere

This time's Commercial Critique Challenge is to study Blue Sphere's screens and create your own mockup following a similar style.

Now some points:

- Use GBC's Limitations
   - 8x8 Tiles
   - 8 four color palettes for the BG
   - 8 four color palettes for the sprites (one of the four being transparent)
   - RGB555 for the colors (optional for those who can't set the colors that way)
   - 160x144pxls
- Be clever with your tile usage!
- Animation is optional

Star Ocean: Blue Sphere

Platform: GameBoy Color
Developer: tri-Ace
Pubisher: Enix



Game Intro


Star Ocean: Blue Sphere is a GameBoy Color game released in 2001, but since it never made it to the west, its existance is unknown for many.


Like the other entries on the series, Blue Sphere is an RPG, featuring a real time battle system. But unlike the previous ones, the enemy encounters are not random as you see all the monster sprites wandering around the screen.
Once you engage battle the game changes from top view to side scroller view, allowing you to move the characters when attacking for extra battle influence (which by the way, have rather comical, but nice animations).



World View, Menu, Battle, Accesories and Weapons, and Bestiary screens


But enough about the gameplay. If you take into account the limitations on the GBC, you can see the clever usage of tiles all over the place.
As you can see in the screenshots, the perspective changes constantly and even appears mixed, as ptoing put it, "it is all over the place.










Anyway, have fun examining the game screens.

So it is that time of the year again :D

The Secret Santa, for those who are not familiar with it, is an annoymous gift exchanging activity.
Basically, you will be making a present for someone and receiving another one.
The catch is that you know who you are giving it to, but not who is giving it to you, which makes it a very enjoyable and thrilling activity.
In our case, since we are Pixelation and all, we will be dealing with "pixel gifts".

Only those who sign up in this thread will be able to take part in it.
If you intend to do so, read carefully this thread.

First of all, here are some things you should be aware of:

  • For signing up, you must reply to this thread with a post along the lines of "I sign up" or "Count me in".
    Any message without a clear response will be ignored.
  • Also, when signing up, please put a couple of facts about you. What you like or dislike, hobbies, or whatever you think that would help the gift making.
  • Please only sign up if you are 100% sure you will be able to make something for your partner.
    If you sign up and do not deliver anything by the due date, you will get a strike and won't be able to participate in the Secret Santa next year.
    Be considerate and think about your partner. How would you feel if you didn't get a gift yourself?

The sign up starts today (November 15th, 2008), and will be open until November 24th (Monday; so you have 9 days to sign up).
You can sign up until I temporarily close the thread, so don't miss your chance.
Once closed, no more participants will be accepted.

Shortly after the sign up is over, you will receive a PM (Personal Message) with the name of the person you have to pixel for.
Then you will have until December 23rd to finish your gift.

Once you are done with yours, please PM me the gift and your partner's name, so I can organize the whole thing before Christmas.

So remember:
  • November 15th~24th - Secret Santa Sign up
  • November 24th/25th - PM Send out (You will receive your partner's name in your PM)
  • December 23rd - Last day to send in your gift

Q&A

What is a "Pixel Gift"?
A pixel gift is basically a pixel art piece you will be giving your partner. It can be anything, from an animation, to an avatar or a full fledged picture.
Whatever you want, as long as it is pixelled.

I will be away on December 23rd, Can I still participate?
Sure. You do not have to deliver the gift exactly ON December 23rd. You can send it in as soon as you are done (actually I would recommend everyone to do this).
So as long as you can deliver it on time, you are good to go.

How are you going to pick the partners?
First I will be assigning everyone a number according to the order you sign up.
Then I will be running this random sequence generator and everyone will get a new number.
After that I will re-run the generator once again to pick the order.

I couldn't finish my gift... Can I send in a WIP?
Yes, but you will still get a strike, and you must finish it as soon as you can. Or else!  >:(

Can I pixel a gift for someone that is not my partner?
Sure, feel free to make extra gifts, but before that focus on your partner's.
