Pixel Art / [WIP] Slug Movement
« on: August 03, 2008, 08:53:15 am »
So there was this game when I was about 8, it wasn't professional at any rate.  It was made with GameMaker 4.0 and MSPaint.  But the gameplay and environment was so cool to me, maybe it was because I was eight?  Anyways...  I have made many versions of it myself, and I may make another one?!  Probably not, but I was bored and I practiced and did some things...

The Main Character:

His walk is based off of Wolverine's Prelude Hero 'Chase'.  Took me forever to finally get unlazy enough to make his face turn left and right.

And heres everything else...I was too lazy to upload a bunch of stuff, so I made a quick mockup.  The background is going to be a real background, but I can't seem to make one...  The things with the blue tip thingys near the top, are supposed to have lightning going in between them, however I haven't made the lightning yet...so it's not there...but pretend it is, that away I don't have to make it.

In the original game the green enemy didn't have eyes or a mouth, but I figured I'd add them in, more scary???  I really like the crate, it was made by accident, but hey it looks pretty good.  Incase anyone is wondering, the purple things are blocks that can only be destroyed by missiles...and they looked like that from the original game.  I'm using a 16 color palette, so colors are limited.  Back to that whole background thing, I'm trying to make a background that's artistic...but not distracting.  I have seen some great dithering on backgrounds in the generic 16 color palette thread.  I tried to copy that style, but I fail...badly...  So if anyone can give me some advice on that I'd be grateful!

C&C is very welcome!

Pixel Art / [WIP] Small Vampire Slayer
« on: July 27, 2008, 07:47:05 am »

So I was inspired a few days ago by Bloodsucking Cinema to make a vampire slaying game based in the 19th century (Steampunk Style).  I like small sprite games...maybe because I'm lazy?  I'm not quite sure.  I am reluctant to put these up, because I just started using GraphicsGale and I don't know how to change the speed.  It is supposed to be faster...although I cannot make it faster.  I am trying a new animation style, I saw it on old cartoons.  I'm sure you all know what it is, it's where you make an inbetween out of the before and after image, and blur them together...kinda...  So anyways, the main character has a black three piece suit without his coat on.  But anyway, I have two reasons for posting this.  One I want to show them off...well, what little there is to show off.  Second is that I cannot seem to make a walk style for him.  I have tried 8 times now, and all of them aren't even worth posting...it is quite irritating.  Maybe its because I'm a programmer first and a pixel artist second...and I am more focused on the programming of the game...I dunno, but if anyone can help me out I would be grateful!!!  Before anyone asks, I have looked, analyzed, and even copied a jpeg file, made the legs small, just to see what a walk style this small should look like.  I think the thing is is that I am not used to animating this small.  But that's why I am practicing!!!

PS:
So I just previewed them again...yea they look way better faster.  I use GM's graphic's editor for animating...and GraphicsGale for transparency and looping...  So there is a huge difference in speed!!!

MODIFY:
So in case anyone is interested, you can see the actual speed here, its a small example of charging up and jousting, and slashing.  Nothing special by any means, but shows my point about the speed.

Helpful Notes:
X - Slash
Z - Joust/Charge Up
Left/Right - Face Left/Right

If I am not supposed to post something like this, I will take it down!  I read the rules and nothing was in it, so I guess its ok...but I have been wrong before...

Pixel Art / [WIP] Practice Animations
« on: June 27, 2008, 11:37:50 am »
So I was looking in a topic and I saw Corsair's sig, and figured I could make a few animations like it...but I'm having trouble!!!

Oh wow the background is the same color as the guy's leg...err I'll upload one with a background as well.

Figured I'd share them with ya'll.  I've been reading the Animator's Survival Guide, and making some simple animations like a pendellem(I honestly don't know how to spell this, usually I'd spell check, but I am WAY too lazy right now...) and the such.

So anyways, I'm kinda happy with the idle animation, although his right leg bothers me.  And about the run animation...yea...lol?  Honestly I sometimes make good running animations and then I don't on others.  If anyone can help me out on running animations I'd be grateful!  I've been looking around at other people's running animations trying to achieve their greatness, but without success.  I've seen a few tutorials as well, but I guess my mind can't get it down.

MODIFY:  Oh wow the guy's right leg isn't the same color as the background...must be a different color when making?!

Pixel Art / [WIP] Alice and Mario
« on: June 25, 2008, 08:17:21 am »

So I was really bored, and started making these.  I was going to make an Alice in Wonderland game, but I kinda stopped when I was making the flower guys.  I made the Mario flower out of a flower I made for Alice in Wonderland.  Then I couldn't stop making Mario stuff...  So...yea...  I'm having trouble animating the Goomba.  I was thinking, a Goomba wouldn't just walk side to side if Mario was near him, he'd chase after him.  So I was trying to make him run like he was unbalanced because of his huge head.  The Mario animation doesn't look so great for some reason on here.  But when I use it against a dark background and have him actually move from left to right, it looks good.  So anywho, just figured I'd dump these on ya'll, C&C is very welcome, especially on any animation tips!!!

Pixel Art / In the Works
« on: June 23, 2008, 10:23:55 am »
So way way back in the day I was on Pixelation...didn't know it was remade!

So I have some pieces I just did a few hours ago, not really much to say.  I was trying out a new shading style I saw on someone's works.  It looks alright I guess, the one guy (not the clown) was difficult because it was bigger, I'm use to small sprites.  The clown looks a lot better on a darker background.  I'm trying to come up with a character for a Alice in Wonderland game, except not her day dreams but my own.  I can't find a style for a platform game I like.  I've been looking at other people's works trying to find a style to steal, but I haven't found one I like yet...  I was thinking super skinny and long like the clown, or bigger and more wide like the one guy.  But I want to go smaller for sure.  Wolverine has a really good style for small sprites with his shooter game.  However that style is really for future stuff only, because the main character is robot...not a person...but robots have feelings too...right???  I was looking at some older GB sprites that are sorta like RPGMaker charsets, but they look kinda cheezy.  So I can't decide on a style, any suggestions are welcome!!!  I just noticed I put the purple on the one guy's color template, I copied the colors from the clown and forgot to take it out...my bad...

MODIFY:  Wow modify is a lot better than edit, sounds better anyways.  So your probably wondering, WHERES THAT MAN"S ARMS!!!  Well, I don't do arms until I do the whole sprite...and since I probably won't use him for the game he's probably stuck armless!
