Pixel Art / Character Refinement
« on: January 05, 2017, 05:55:44 pm »
Hi all,

Thanks for looking into my thread! Here you will find the animations I've been working on for my character Esperanza.

Please provide critique and criticism where you want. (I'm trying very hard to make a great character and game, I really want to take my ability to the next level, let's get there together!)
My game samples animations at 12FPS, so I've tried my best to make my animations fit this timescale.

working on my character again, decided to reduce resolution by 50% to make it easier to work with, so far I'm happy with the decision because I'm able to work faster and not have to worry too much about the details

a few notes - i was once told my animation style is that of Mitsuo Iso and it's definitely something that I've embraced, I draw every frame one by one, I don't have key frames or in betweens
the biggest issue with my animation style I believe is it lacks force, I'm not sure how to fix that in most places
the details are not finished yet, i'm primarily focusing on animation smoothness right now
also, i'm self taught - i've always been artistic but never a true artist, it's taken me 3 years of intermittent work to get comfortable with where I am, so please consider that I don't know many art fundamentals or terminology

Hi all,

I've managed to get my game up on the app store now.

Thanks to the members here for guiding me in learning pixel art.

Also if you'd like to apply for the opportunity to work on this game (and possibly future) check out my job offer thread here:

Hello Pixelation,

I've been learning pixel art myself for a bit over 2 years now and personally I love it and it's fun but it is quite time tasking, and in order to achieve a truly masterful look you need to dedicate lots of time and practice. I don't personally have time to devote like this, however I've made all of my own art for a game.

Now I'm looking for someone to fix up my art. Make it really great instead of mediocre.

If you are interested in improving my art let me know, please provide a couple example image of your art, and provide your expected rate of pay.

Please keep in mind because this is 'improvement' work and not 'from scratch' the rate of pay will not be the same as for original works. http://2dwillneverdie.com/blog/how-much-do-sprites-cost/

An early example of one of these assets can be found here - http://pixelation.org/index.php?topic=19250.msg169679#msg169679
This way you can evaluate the quality of an existing asset and level of improvement that will be needed.
If you would like to see more updated version with animation just let me know.

edit - this spot has been filled

Hi All,

Been apart of the community for some time but not very outspoken individual. I've had a couple works critiqued and have learned a lot about general Sprite/Pixel art development and creation.

Right now I'm pretty deep into development and need to start turning out a lot of animations because I'm working on a fighting style game. I probably choose the hardest genre for pixel art since it requires tons upon tons of animations and variety but there's no deadline and I'm in no real rush to produce a product.

That being said, I'm still active and working on characters and enemies. The issue I'm having is that it's hard to find references for very specific and detailed actions. For example if I want a flying kick from the side scrolling perspective (this has been hard for me to find).

I wonder if anyone knows of any kind of repo that has lots of different fighting moves animated out from the side scrolling view, or of any kind of 3D program maybe where I can record the screen and then break out the frames.

In general I'm using Google and finding any image or old game sprites to reference and use for character anatomy and positioning, but I thought I'd put an ear to the ground for a better solution.

General Discussion / A pixel art Q/A format website!
« on: April 14, 2015, 06:29:39 pm »
Hi All,

I'm a relatively recent member of Pixelation and I love the community and forum layout, but I feel like it leaves something to be wanted when concerning WIP part of the site.

I made a proposal on Stack Exchange Area51 to create a Pixel Art Q/A sub site: http://area51.stackexchange.com/proposals/86270/pixel-art?referrer=gRUDLZsR5CvrHNoc4LZ2-g2

If you go to the link, sign up and support the proposal, we could expand the community into a great Q/A site that can really help everyone advance in their art work!

Hope you all like the idea and support it!

Pixel Art / Mastering Fighter Sprite

Hi WotP!

I have this thread running on PJ but thought maybe I'd reach more eyes with a duplicate here!

Here's my current character - I tried to make her face much softer and also tried to stick to the structure in the image and work with the pixel area I have:

A gif showing the changes:

Also, here's a new stance I've been working on to give her a bit more personality and power:

And a transitional frame I'm working on to turn the above stance into an energy blast stance:
