Pixel Art / [wip][C+C] Runestone Computer
« on: September 02, 2018, 09:34:05 am »
This little concept is basically a large standing rune stone that when the player interacts with would have a screen next to it light up to show a variety of menu items in a world without actually opening the menu.

The theming is a kind of amalgamation of Norse and dark dystopian sci-fi, This is where I am having some trouble, as I'm unsure on how to make this look like a merge of stone and tech. currently, this piece looks more like a stone.. with a flat-screen slapped next to it..

if anyone has any ideas how to make this look more..singular I would appreciate it.

Pixel Art / [WIP][C+C] Robot warrior
« on: August 15, 2018, 10:58:42 am »
I created this sprite today and id like some input on improving it both visually and in the characters design,
the character is meant to be a feminine robotic warrior from a somewhat dark setting,
trying to find a balance between something that looks like Norse armour and something that looks 'sci-fi-ish'

in addition, I am trying to restrict my colours to a Mega-Drive/Genesis palette
This means selecting 16 colours from a 9-bit 512 colour palette max.

All of my colours are picked from this colour reference chart I put together.

I was taking inspiration from Norse mythology and trying to convert ideas to a sci-fi look- however, it ended up looking more medieval than Viking.

Pixel Art / [C+C][WIP] Metal Skull door.
« on: October 26, 2017, 12:16:41 am »
I started this piece to try and practice shading my metals a little bit

The idea is a giant ornate iron Double door, decorated with a big metal skull, carved in the middle would be a slot for stone or crystal to unlock it.

it did not come out in quite the skull shape I had intended.

Pixel Art / [C+C] Colour palette & swords
« on: October 12, 2017, 07:56:54 am »
I decided to do a little practice around colours. I always seem to struggle with pallettes even after reading through many of the tutorials on them, constantly find my self-wanting to change colours halfway through a project.

I created this palette while attempting to get more 'neutral' shades

the palette stills lack a range of purple or pinks but I am also worried that there are too many colours.

I would appreciate any thoughts on the colours and their usage so far.

« on: October 02, 2017, 04:45:07 pm »
I have been playing around with a concept for a GUI, hoping to make something that clearly displays a lot of RPG information.

opinions on its design would be appreciated.

Pixel Art / [WIP] [C+C] Fai Sprite
« on: August 19, 2017, 02:10:23 pm »
Hello all,
Quite some time ago I was working on a little gender neutral fennec fox character that I named Fai.
Recently for a bit of pixel practice, I decided to come back to Fai and rework her/him

I have decided to try and constrain my art to Megadrive colour palette limitations however after reworking Fai's colours the character spite somehow seems off..  almost flatter and less round.  though maybe that's just the head and face lacking shading.
For reference, here is the Megadrive's palette

Old fai sprite.                                        New Megadrive pallette Fai sprite.

I really want to improve the sprite some more particular the head which I have had difficulty shading due to the hat and facial details. so any thoughts/opinions would be appreciated as I am having issues working out where the flaws are, perhaps I have been staring at the sprite too long.

Pixel Art / [WIP][C&C] another practice piece
« on: July 05, 2017, 07:39:03 pm »
Another practice piece, I'm really not used to doing larger style pixel art, its more like drawing.

I'm not really sure what direction I was trying to go with this, kept getting caught between line art and solid colour styles.

Pixel Art / [C&C] Sonic Sprite
« on: June 25, 2017, 12:55:23 pm »
I have been on some new medication lately that has been making me feel awful, so wanted to take a break from my current 'parchment pixel project' and do something less restrictive.

I decided to try and draw Sonic using a random 16 colour palette I found on google. I also decided to draw him smaller than his original mega drive sprite as, in my mind, this would have saved memory on the old cartridge.

it's probably not the best since I was pretty sleep deprived at the time of drawing it, but I'm curious what people's opinions might be.

Pixel Art / [WIP][C&C] Parchment Style Pixel Palette
« on: June 15, 2017, 08:52:26 pm »
Starting a project, where a full top down tileset, and character will be displayed on a piece of parchment, looking at 16x16 tiles
I am trying to decide on a colour palette that will capture both the retro pixel art style and the parchment paper look, however picking colours has always been really difficult for me (impartially colour blind so that doesn't help).

I'm worried if I picked the wrong colours I wound get enough depth in the details or that the character will blend into the environment too much.

Since everything is made out of parchment id imagine I should keep the colour palette, small.
Any ideas/ thoughts?

General Discussion / Looking for advice
« on: May 31, 2017, 07:58:38 pm »
Greetings,
I have been doing pixel art for a few years now as a hobby, I was never super serious about it and I don't consider myself that good.
However, more recently I have been contemplating becoming a freelance pixel artist, and I am wondering if anyone one here has any advice or knows of any pitfalls I should avoid?

Due to disability I have never actually had a job before, so I am still trying to puzzle out how to do simple things like taxes on income, and just generally trying to plan it out and see if its the direction I want to go.

any advice or tales of caution from other freelance artists out there would be appreciated.
