Job offers / Pixel artist needed for voxel game [Paid]
« on: April 27, 2016, 07:06:37 pm »
Hello, my name is Robert and I'm an independent game developer. I've used pixelation a few times in the past to look for talent, and I've always been extremely pleased with the results, so here I am again.

I'm looking for a pixel artist to collaborate with to create the artwork for a new project, possibly an add-on or successor to my most successful game, 'Timber and Stone'. At any rate, the game will be a 3rd person action rpg, and the gameplay will primarily be based around dungeon crawling and resource collecting, with a huge emphasis on the player constructing their own kingdom. Another huge feature I plan to include is allowing creators to 'DM' their own dungeons, and share those quests with the community. Those player made dungeons and premade story-based dungeons will be created using tiles and prefabs very similar to how tabletop roleplayers create terrain for their dungeon crawling. Here's a good example of that: https://dwarven-forge.myshopify.com/collections/city-builder-painted  I have a huge passion in making games that give players the opportunity to create.

So I'm in need of an artist capable of designing those prefabricated tiles, in addition to character, item, and enemy designs, all in 3d pixels (or voxels). I think it's very important to note that I don't need someone already experienced with voxel work. I've previously worked with pixel artists who were new to voxels, and the results were always amazing. I strongly believe that having a pre-established talent with pixel art is what makes great voxel art.

If you're at all interested in working on this new project, please don't hesitate to send me an email at: Robert (at) timberandstonegame (dot) com. Be sure to include your availability, portfolio, and hourly rate. From there we can move forward with talking more about what I'm looking for, and I can help get you started with voxel art software.

Edit: Occurs to me that I should provide some examples of what I'm looking for:

Job offers / [PAID] Looking for freelance pixel artist
« on: November 02, 2014, 07:29:32 pm »
Hello, my name is Robert and for the last 3 years I've worked on the indie game, Timber and Stone. You can find out more about the game at http://www.timberandstonegame.com, though the many "Let's Play" videos on YouTube might be more informative.

Currently we're updating the graphics style with heavy inspiration from games like FFT and BoF3. Going from flat shaded surfaces to delicious chunky pixels and RPG style tilesets.

Here are some screenshots showcasing what's been done in this update:

While this portion of the update is well underway, the characters, enemies and animals are really looking out of place and are also in need of an update. These entities are 3D sprites, created using 3d pixels sometimes called voxels. This style of 3d pixel characters can also be found in games like 3D-Dot Heroes, Stone Hearth, and Cube World. Though the fashion in which they're rendered in my game strives to keep a 2d pixel-based appearance in tact. Here's some examples of the current models, and a few attempts at an updated style:

Again, please note that these are rendered in game without any normal-based lighting, to preserve the pixel art style. In other words, the boxy 3d shading present in a few of the above models (the sheep for example) gets removed.
While these are technically 3-dimensional objects, I strongly believe the ability to create great looking 3d sprites comes from a pre-established skill with pixel art.

What I'm needing is someone capable of creating character concept art in this method. Simply to produce these designs, at which point I'll approve them and pass 'em off to someone else to do the actual modelling, rigging, and animating. There are a few tools that can be used to create the character designs, but what I've found is that the simplest tools tend to work best, and I'll suggest software that I've used (which is free).

I'm looking for a freelance artist I can pay per asset or hourly, though I cannot guarantee any certain number of hours of work.

If you're up to the task, please send your rates and portfolios to Robert (at) TimberAndStoneGame (dot) com .

Job offers / [PAID] Looking for Pixel Artist(s)

I hope I'm not breaking etiquette by posting this both at pixelation and pixel joint, if so, my apologies.

I'll start with a bit of information about myself. My name is Robert, and I started as a hobbyist game developer far too many years ago. I've been extremely fortunate in that I've been able to pursue independent game development full time. My most recent (and successful) project is Timber and Stone (more info at www.timberandstonegame.com, although the many videos on You-Tube might be more informative). While I continue to focus most of my time to the continued development of that game, I've become very passionate about another project. Because of that, and my limited proficiency with pixel art,  I've decided to hire pixel artists to help start the new project.

I'll go ahead and post my plans for the (currently unnamed) game. I was lucky enough to grow up in what I consider the golden age, playing fantastic games like Mega Man, Metroid, Ghosts & Goblins, Gunstar Heroes, and Castlevania, even now when I play these games again, I find them greatly inspiring. And that's the basis for the type of game I wish to eventually create. I do however wish to expand on the 2d platforming style of gameplay that those examples provide by implementing features usually associated with WRPGs. Fantasy setting, stat based combat, questing (no emphasis on grinding though, loath it),  inventory, and a game-world filled with towns and dungeons. The player character will progress by gaining levels, which will enhance his abilities with weapons, magic, crafting, and mobility. Platforming, exploration and combat will still be a major focus, of course, staying true to the roots of the genre. The controls will be designed with a gamepad in mind, and the target platform will be Steam initially, but there might be a push toward PSN & XBLA depending on the game's success.

I suppose this would be a good time to describe what I'm looking for in terms of graphics. I'm aiming for visuals comparable to SNES/CPS2/NEOGEO. The game will run at 426x240 resolution with 3x scaling, with human characters needing to be around 48 pixels tall.

I'll be needing everything, environment graphics, character & enemy animations, and GUI components. If you specialize only in character animating, or perhaps you only do environment art, that's fine.

I've always felt that a game's visuals can be of primary importance (especially when it comes to pixel-art), so I've set aside a large budget for the game's graphics (I'd rather not post the exact amount in the forum, but it's well into five figures). I'd prefer to pay flat rates for pixel work on a freelance basis, but I am willing to pay hourly for the right artist(s). I can give more information on budget and amount of work via email.

If you have any interest, please send your availabilty, resume and rates to robert @ timberandstonegame (dot) com

Thanks and hope to hear back from you.
