Pixel Art / Shiver animation - where to start?
« on: February 17, 2010, 05:16:32 am »
Hey guys,

I know it's been a long time since I've put any pixel work up.  Shame on me.
Anyway, I have this piece I've just started getting happy with, but I'm a bit stuck for starting the animation.  Basically, the thing is a dying mess; the character was almost done transforming into a demon before being interupted, and not everything got put together.  So it's essentially paralysed, with only the magical energies stopping it from dying instantly.

What I want to do is have it do a short of 'shiver' or 'shudder' animation, which I've seen people do in a few places, the only problem is that I can't find any good references and have no idea where to start.  So I guess I was curious, if people know the kind of thing I'm talking about, if they had any references or bits of advice?

Here's the starting image, still in need of some refining/cleaning as we go...:

Original Palette - Revised Palette (he's supposed to be a "sun" demon) - blue skin because a friend said it reminded them of Velius from Preteen Fantasy Tactics.

(if it looks a little funny, he's leaning in a corner of the room)

Pixel Art / Partisan - take two

Been out of practice, wanted to do a little bit of a warm-up exercise before really launching into things again :

 - just a warmup

- new Partisan tiles!  We're starting almost completely over, smarter, faster, better than before!

2D & 3D / Sergeant

been slow on the pixels lately, but this sorta counts.  Kinda mid-poly, 600 tri limit (a lot goes into the LOD (400) looks almost exactly the same except for the hands and face...
64x64 for body, weapon and head have separate (unstarted) textures...yellow pane to be a feather with alpha

seam on the back has been fixed since this image

mostly just for fun...

not a lot of ideas for the face.  low res looks bad when i try it, high-res doesn't match up....I might end up with the FF7/megaman legends approach of simple shapes/colors with higher-res flat eyes.

Pixel Art / Vikings

Fil and I are putting together hat we hope keeps becoming a small project.  We have a bad habit of letting ideas expand so hopefully if i start posting we will be forced to stick to what i show here (and nothing more ridiculous :P)

currently it's almost pixel-friendly but the grass is on an automated thing.

the game is a silly viking adventure side-scrolling RPG.
this would be (one of) the heroes, the fightahhh.  just showing the model before i begin to animate and the outline/fill style of the world before i begin to draw it.

Just a little practice,\\

embarrassing 350 tris and the texels on the legs are too small/many...empty spot on the map is for arms (this guy is going to be light infantry - harquebusier)

General Discussion / Unofficial Unused Idea Thread

Post here your unused ideas!  Anything that was scrapped for lack of time, teams, money, or even interest...

We all have a lot of them, should be a fun read by the time we get through :P

I'll start with a few :

  • Hollow Land : A game set in the farish future where a rogue group of American nuclear facilities, disgusted with the way the world runs, pool their resources to create a new underground country which you can be a part of by literally carving out your niche.  Imagine Second Life meets Dwarf Fortress meets the Jetsons.
  • Viking Game : A beat/rhythm game in which the four buttons are four ways to kill the peasants running past you, set to metal songs about vikings.  There's actually a fullish design doc to this one that I pitched to Fil, and we may go for it in the future, so this might be HANDS OFF >:( :o :-[ ??? ;D
  • Folkmetal Alchemist : A game i didn't even bother pitching to fil which has the same input and similar tracks as the idea above but the visuals are completely different, you mix ingredients and charms in-time to have an edward-elric style duel with another alchemist.
  • Acquapolis : Think age of empires and sim city under water.  Requires 3d rts combat not unlike homeworld (except with a floor sometimes) and therefor was never pitched.

Pixel Art / The Lililolos need your help!

Jeanne/Joan of the Manahouti

Project description from professor: Create a piece that observes the colonial mindset and argue for or against.

During the revolution of 1789, a ship carrying an Émigré and his family is blown off course and wrecks on a remote island, the only? survivor his daughter.  She is quickly discovered by the lililolos (read - liliputs) who are part of the greater manahouti (read, menehune).  The smallest (about knee-hight) and weakest of the tribes, they believe that Jeanne/Joan is the "bright one" who was prophesied to deliver them.

other races of the manahouti:
cahotes - like rock golems but still smaller than Jeanne, about thigh high.
pahos - larger rockier, and very elusive.
wikinis - brush imps that have long been the enemies of the lililolos

can't pick a palette, the only thing i learned from this is that the females will be darker lighter - sorry for the typo than the men (and smaller and covered)

Pixel Art / WIP for weekly challenge
« on: January 02, 2008, 10:12:02 pm »

obviously a very early WIP, so not yet concerned with pixel technique but with palette and composition.  Palette especially though because i have a borken monitor that makes everything desaturated and bluish....

brownie points for anyone (aside perhaps fil_razorback) who can tell me what the girl in the brown is looking at (but it's not essential to the piece).

meant for use on characters with a much higher level of detail, possibly for hand-drawn characters, just shrunken for ease of placement.
