Pixel Art / Platformer character animations

Hello Pixelation,

I feel like I've hit a plateau with animating this character. I got animations I enjoyed, then spent time refining them and everything. I know they can be better (the animations and the character itself). I've come here to get a little guidance on taking things to the next level. It feels like I've looked at it so much that the flaws have become invisible. Here are some of the animations:

I'm having trouble with the main character in my game, being placed against different backgrounds. Here is an image to illustrate:



The first three are against a low sat background, with decreasing brightness. The last three are against a high sat background, with decreasing brightness. As you can see, against dark backgrounds, especially saturated ones, then the border looks very weird, especially around the legs. Against the lighter background it looks alright.

I'm mainly looking for ways to fix this, but crits on the character are welcomed too. Thanks!

Pixel Art / [WIP] Pixel Joint Challenge: Copy Helm!

This weeks pixel joint challenge lets you choose any previous challenge from 2009. I am gonna try and enter, with the April fools one, where you try and mimic someones style. I chose Helm, and have been trying to really look at how he do it. Heres what I have so far:

The main stylistic things I notice are

- an intricate and varied dither pattern
- a few straight lines somewhere in the piece
- his technique of starting with polygonal shapes for stuff like faces, kind of an angular construction
- black hair

Also, he has sort of a style in the types of colors he picks that I have been completely unable to figure out. Also, Helm has many different styles, but something kind of like what i described seems to be the most recurring.

Input on getting closer to his style is welcomed, as well as more general critique. The hair is not finished, of course. Just blocked it out.

Pixel Art / Firefly Crew

I am planning on doing all of the firefly crew, but I started with just these four (Mal, River, Kaylee). I have not been able to get anything satisfactory done with their faces, so any suggestions or edits in that area would be especially appreciated. It is hard to make anything on a 5x6 pixel space. Also, I am really not worried about color count in this piece, so crits on that are unnecessary. Everything else is fair game.

Pixel Art / Atalanta Animations

Hey everyone,

This is an animation of the Greek hero Atalanta, shooting her bow. I tried to keep the animation brief but smooth and readable, as it would be used in a game. In the game, you can hold down the shoot button to charge up the shot, so when you see the delay between the bow being drawn and her shooting, it is the frame that will remain displayed until the player releases the button. I haven't drawn an arrow or anything yet.

I decided to enter the PJ challenge 7even Knights, and for my subject I chose to interpret my avatar in pixel form. This is my first time working with a predefined, constricted palette. It was easier in some ways (I didn't have to choose colors!) but harder in others. Here is my WIP:



I have not done anything in the background yet. All comments are criticisms are welcome.

Hey,

This is a piece I made to practice facial anatomy, shading, and some dithering. It's the first time I've really used dithering, and am not sure if I did so correctly. I basically used dithering as an extra color between the two being dithered.

I tweaked this some more... this piece is quite fun. With Helm's edit I saw a few ways it was off.

Hey guys,

I am working on a piece of Mathilda from the movie Leon. Again, I am having problems with my palette though. I believe it is contrasted enough this time, but still looks wrong. Also, I don't think I captured her essence here. I realize it takes a lot of skill to do that, but looking between the ref and my pic, I just can't tell what is off.

Hey, this is a piece of a girl holding a camera. It is based on a real person, but I don't have a great reference pic. I know it is in pretty much the same style as my last piece, but I promise to branch out in my next work (especially in the face). I have not done her fingers in front of the camera, I was having a lot of trouble with them
