Pixel Art / [WIP] [C+C] Dark Monastery
« on: January 11, 2015, 08:32:58 pm »
It's been a while since I talked about doing a Dungeon Master/EOB/Black Crypt (and Lands of Lore/Knightmare) -inspired mockup in this Pixelation thread, but no matter, I finally got to work on it during my Xmas holidays just now. Enormous thanks for Lackey's work of mapping out the necessary shapes.

I took Lackeys templates, which were based on EOB1 and 2 (which had the smallest first person windows) and expanded them to the size used in Black Crypt. Still very WIP and all, I'm currently working on the UI to make it look decent enough. Once the UI's in shape I can FINALLY get to the best part of creating monsters and other ingame objects.

This is what it currently looks like:

 - The character portraits are the oldest part of this thing and may need some smoothing out.
 - The UI needs to be solidified.
 - The magic menu needs some semi-believable fake logic.
 - The look of the arrows must match the button -like look of the weapon buttons.
 - The compass obviously needs work.
 - On the bottom of the game view is my hopefully original idea of showing the location of the party in relation to a larger context. This one's supposed to show that the party is currently on the first floor of the cellar beneath the evil monastery
 - The game view. The barrels and the windows are sketchy, I'll get back to all of this once I no longer have to worry about the UI. As you can see from the palette and all, it's VERY heavily inspired by EOB 2.

These are the wall, floor and roof pieces. I made the whole set so I can more freely create a bunch of varied locations where to put monsters and stuff once I get that far.

The palette. I'm aiming for 32 colours. There are still 4 slots free.

Pixel Art / Ikirouta IV - Ultima 5-inspired WIP
« on: November 14, 2010, 05:10:22 pm »
This is a mock-up I've been doodling on. 12 years ago or so me and my friends started working on an U4/U5 -like game, I did the graphs, and they had a map editor already coded. Of course nothing came out of it. But I decided to return to the old brief for fun, which was to create tiles for a really dark, low-magic fantasy world. Unfortunately I've lost the original tiles ages ago, it would've been fun to compare. The UI is a complete Ultima 5 rip-off, there just to get myself in the mood. Ikirouta means permafrost.

Pixel Art Feature Chest / GR#029 - Fir Tree
« on: July 15, 2010, 01:22:27 pm »
Due to the recent lackage of tree -threads here's my contribution. As always, I had to up the contrast after a while, why do I always have to do that? I've pretty much never managed to choose bold enough colours from the start. Anyway, this is just for fun, but I might expand the theme..

Pixel Art / [WIP] Barbarian girl
« on: December 30, 2009, 12:26:39 pm »
I've been pixeling this for fun for a couple of days.. hoping I might get this actually finished. I'm working on a computer with a really crap monitor (and Photoshop 5) so there's not much I can do about colours atm. So my questions:

Anatomy. How does it look? I'd like to apply the squareness to it that I've used in the bg and in the girls hair etc. The arms are currently not square enough..
Shading. The light's coming from up left, should I darken the skin and play with highlights or draw an actual shadow? The current shading is a remnant from before I decided the direction of the light..
What else do barbarians wear? Not much, I know, but still..

15 colours, one more colour to add as well...

Pixel Art / [WIP] Autokill
« on: November 25, 2009, 07:09:07 pm »
I'm helping out a friend of mine is practicing Flash and is making a game as an incentive to learn stuff. He laid down some base graphs before I jumped in. In the game you're driving a car that's picking up speed constantly, and the only way to slow down is to run over people while dodging incoming trucks. I'll post a link to the playable Flash game in a bit.

Here's the intro screen. Still WIP. Any suggestions for improvement?

Here's an explosion that I did, ignore the rest of the ingame graphs, they're old.

Pixel Art / My Habbo graphics dump
« on: March 28, 2009, 03:42:34 pm »
I've been working at Sulake for four months now doing Habbo graphs so here's some of what I've done. Unfortunately I can't post any WIPs because I can't show anything before it's done and tested and integrated and so forth, so I can't do any changes anymore but I'd be glad to receive feedback anyway. I know the Habbo style irks many pixel artists but I can assure you that trying to maintain the elements that make it look Habbo is a constant matter of discussion at Sulake as well. Me and a few other graphic guys spent once two hours in pub just discussing the pros and cons of black outlines.

So.. the Bollywood set, my first furnis. The palm tree was fun to do although I think it would have benefited from being a bit darker and more contrasty.

The furnis in use:

Then, the Lost City set. The bubbles inside the tube thing animate, and so do the fish in the glass floor thing. The tubes were fun to do, make it so that you can build Pipe Dreams -like constructions using the water tubes. The wall graphics have an obvious Cadaver influence.

Aaand.. what they look like in Habbo:

General Discussion / EOB, Dungeon Master, Black Crypt..
« on: July 22, 2008, 09:23:53 am »
Would anyone be able to explain what sorts of tilesets are the bg graphs of these kinds of classic RPGs made of? I've never managed to see a site where I could view a complete tileset of these games. Even better would be a graph engine to play around with, I've wanted to try my hands on these kinds of graphics for a very long time.

Black Crypt, difficult as hell

Dungeon Master's 16 -colour awesomeness included bgs and monsters fading towards black if your torch went off..

Pixel Art / Strange vehicles

Hi! These are some vehicles I've been making lately for a Facebook mini game. The front, middle and rear sections are interchangeable.

Pixel Art / "One for me, one for the pan"
« on: November 28, 2007, 11:21:06 am »
I like to draw sitting on the floor while watching documentaries or cooking programs or travel programs, because they're not as intensive as fictional series and don't demand constant alertness. So, series that are good for this are: Keith Floyd's cooking programs, Time Team, Michael Palin's travel series etc.. So here's Keith Floyd. Kinda random. ;)

The bg bugs me.. I just can't think of anything to put in there. Stripes didn't work very well. :-\
