General Discussion / Re-emergence of pixel art on the iPhone?
« on: December 06, 2009, 11:32:33 pm »
So, my last thread was on a disturbing trend, but now I think we might have an brighter future...

Look at this:

Pretty neat, imo, even though it is rather rough in some areas (the roof tiles, for example, hurts my eyes).

Anyone else spotted really well pixeled games on the iPhone?

General Discussion / Disturbing trend in iPhone games
« on: May 25, 2009, 09:21:05 pm »
I was so looking forward to a game called Zenonia for the iPhone, but when I saw the screenshots I was a bit shocked.

They murdered the pixels:

And this isn't the only game that has done this. Puzzle Quest does it too (even stretches the graphics) and 24: Special Ops uses a horrible scaler. I'm not sure if Crystal Defenders does it, but it looks suspiciously like bilinear filtering, even though they've added horrible ugly borders, instead of drawing proper widescreen graphics.

In short, for me this means that I'm staying as far away from ports to the iPhone platform as I can.

Though some ports choose a different route.

Both Pinball Dreams and Boulder Dash try to update the original graphics, but thankfully, you can choose to have the original pixels via a menu option. :)

General Discussion / Does a similar forum exist for icon & ui design?
« on: February 15, 2008, 03:22:27 pm »
There are hundreds of icons and skins for various applications (and websites) being released every day, but I've never found a place to post, critique and discuss these things. I've been a professional icon designer for a few years now, and I'm itching to talk about common problems, solutions, techniques and so on.

Can anyone recommend me a place?

(Oh, and my/most icons these days are object based and not pixel based, so this forum would not be suitable.)

Pixel Art / An uncertain introduction... (comments welcome)
« on: October 14, 2006, 07:29:17 pm »
Ever since I saw my first Bitmap Brothers' game I've adored pixel art, and the pixel art of the demo scene was just uneblievable (Made's stuff especially). Henk Nieborg is also awesome. I need to find a copy of Lomax again.

But anyway, I never felt that I was any good at pixel art. I'm used to be more into pencil sketching and these days, I mostly use my Wacom board. However, I did dabble a bit in placing pixels by hand, so I thought I'd post here and see what you think:

Knockdown Karate graphics

This is so old, but I think it's my first real serious pixel art attempt. It was made for a shareware game for the old grayscale PalmOS devices (which later turned color as seen in the last picture, but the two on the left only have four shades of grey). The game was released, but never using my graphics (I do have an internal release with them, though). Unfortunately, the developer switched to PocketPC despite Gameloft (a big publisher back then) having shown interest in the title.

Steem buttons

These were made for an old Atari STe emulator and I'm still actually pretty proud of them. Working with 16x16 icons in 16 colors wasn't easy, and I must confess that I suprised myself several times at how readable the images became. I especially like the joystick. Can anyone tell what brand and model it is?

Anyway, so that's what I dare to show you, but I'm looking forward to your comments and crits.

I will probably mostly lurk here, since I very seldom do pixel work these days, but I do enjoy looking at everyone's art here!

Btw, does anyone know where the Amiga demo scene pixel gallery called... gfx2art (I think?) went... I can't find any evidence that it ever existed in Google... very weird.
